Chapter 101 - Episode 96 - The Rain Returns

It began with a smell. It wasn't thunder, and it wasn't wind, but a faint metallic scent in the air that Seo-yeon noticed the moment she stepped out of her campus building.

Rain always announced itself to her differently than it did to other people. To most, rain was just weather. To Seo-yeon, rain had once been an ending.

She stood on the steps outside the building, her bag strap resting against her shoulder, and stared at the sky. Clouds had gathered quietly, layering over each other like a slow bruise spreading across the horizon. The light dimmed in stages, as if the day was being lowered gently into shadow.

Around her, students reacted the way she used to envy. Someone complained about forgetting an umbrella, someone laughed and pulled their jacket over their head, and a group ran toward the bus stop, squealing as the first drops hit their hair.

Seo-yeon didn't move. She watched.

The first drop landed on the back of her hand—cool and light. Then another. Then a dozen.

Rain. Real rain.

Her chest tightened—not in fear, but in recognition. The sound of it deepened quickly, filling the air with a steady rhythm. She should have panicked. In her first life, rain had been the soundtrack to tragedy. It was bound to her memory so tightly that even the thought of it used to make her stomach twist.

But she didn't panic. Instead, she felt something unexpected: distance. It wasn't physical distance, but temporal distance.

The rain that ended her life existed in a different time, a different version of her. That rain belonged to the woman who lived fourteen years of grief and exhaustion and finally stopped fighting. This rain belonged to someone else—the girl who rebuilt herself step by step.

Seo-yeon lifted her hand again, letting the drops collect on her skin. She stared at the small beads of water like they were proof that reality could repeat itself without repeating the same outcome.

A memory tried to surface—headlights, wet pavement, and that overwhelming feeling of utter helplessness. She let it come. She didn't shove it away, and she didn't pretend she was immune. The image flickered in her mind like an old film, and then, slowly, it faded. It didn't fade because she forced it to disappear, but because it no longer owned her.

Seo-yeon exhaled and walked forward into the rain. She wasn't running, she wasn't hiding, and she wasn't bracing for impact.

Her shoes splashed lightly in the shallow puddles forming along the sidewalk. The world smelled clean and sharp. Streetlights reflected on the wet ground, stretching long gold lines across the asphalt.

She reached the bus stop and sat on the bench. Rain fell around her steadily.

She realized she was waiting for something. She wasn't waiting for the accident, or for Mr. Han, or for an unknown number to flash on her phone. She was waiting to see what it felt like to exist in the rain without being taken from herself.

Minutes passed. Her phone stayed silent. Nothing happened.

There was no collapse. There was no sudden turn. There was just rain, and there was just time.

Seo-yeon leaned back against the bench and closed her eyes briefly. For the first time, she allowed herself to think a dangerous thought: maybe the rain was never the enemy. Maybe it was only the setting where she had learned she could lose everything.

And now, standing inside it again, she wasn't losing. She was living.
