Chapter 56 - A Night of New Beginnings

Stephanie had every intention of returning to the small house she and Maya had been staying in.

She had even begun gathering her things.

But the moment she mentioned leaving, Madeleine immediately shook her head.

"No."

Her voice wasn't stern.

It was pleading.

"We just found you, sweetheart."

Tears glistened in her eyes as she stepped closer.

"We spent years believing we'd never see you again."

She gently cupped Stephanie's face.

"Please… don't leave us so soon."

Henri stood beside his wife and smiled warmly.

"Your grandmother is right."

"You've spent enough years away from this family."

He placed a comforting hand on Stephanie's shoulder.

"Let us make up for some of that lost time."

Stephanie looked from one of them to the other.

The love in their eyes was impossible to ignore.

She had only met them hours ago…

Yet somehow…

Being with them felt strangely comforting.

Like she'd unknowingly returned to a place that had always belonged to her.

A small smile spread across her lips.

"…Okay."

Madeleine immediately wrapped her in a tight embrace.

"Oh, thank goodness."

Henri chuckled softly.

"I'll have your rooms prepared immediately."

Less than an hour later…

Stephanie stood speechless inside one of the most beautiful bedrooms she had ever seen.

Cream-colored walls reflected the warm glow of elegant chandeliers.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked perfectly landscaped gardens.

Fresh flowers decorated the room, filling it with a delicate fragrance.

A king-sized bed sat in the center, covered in soft white sheets that looked untouched.

Everything about the room whispered comfort.

And home.

Just across the hallway…

Another luxurious room had been prepared for Maya.

The moment she walked inside…

Her mouth fell open.

"…This is my room?"

A housekeeper smiled politely.

"Yes, Miss Maya."

Maya slowly spun in circles.

The chandelier sparkled overhead.

There was a walk-in closet larger than her entire bedroom back home.

Even the bathroom looked like something from a five-star hotel.

She slowly turned toward Stephanie.

"If you ever decide to leave this mansion…"

She dramatically raised a finger.

"I'm staying."

Stephanie burst into laughter.

"I knew you'd say that."

Maya grinned shamelessly.

"I'm serious."

"If they adopt me too, don't interrupt."

The two girls laughed until tears formed in their eyes.

For the first time that day…

Stephanie forgot about everything she'd learned.

Even if only for a few moments.

Later that night…

The two friends sat on Stephanie's balcony.

The cool evening breeze brushed gently against their skin.

Below them, the mansion gardens glowed beneath rows of elegant lights.

For several minutes…

Neither of them spoke.

Some silences didn't need words.

Finally, Maya looked over.

"How are you… really?"

Stephanie hugged her knees.

"I don't know."

She stared into the distance.

"I feel happy."

"But also sad."

"And confused."

She let out a quiet laugh.

"I don't even know if those emotions are supposed to exist together."

"They do," Maya answered softly.

Stephanie nodded.

"I spent my whole life wondering where I came from."

"And today…"

"I found an entire family."

She swallowed hard.

"But I also found out who my father really was."

Her voice trembled.

"I don't know how to feel about him anymore."

Maya reached over and held her hand.

"You don't have to figure everything out tonight."

Stephanie looked at her.

"You think so?"

"I know so."

Maya smiled.

"One step at a time."

Stephanie rested her head lightly against Maya's shoulder.

"I'm really glad you're here."

Maya smiled.

"Always."

A soft knock interrupted them.

"Come in."

Two housekeepers entered, pushing an elegant dining trolley filled with steaming dishes.

"Good evening, Miss Stephanie."

"Dinner has been served."

The aroma instantly filled the room.

Roasted chicken.

Creamy mashed potatoes.

Fresh vegetables.

Warm bread.

Rich pasta.

Maya's stomach growled loudly.

She covered her face.

"…Pretend you didn't hear that."

Stephanie laughed.

"I definitely heard it."

Within minutes…

The two friends were happily eating together.

The conversation slowly shifted away from painful memories.

They joked.

They laughed.

They teased each other.

Little by little…

The heaviness in Stephanie's heart became easier to carry.

Just as they finished dessert…

Another knock sounded.

A neatly dressed chauffeur stepped inside.

"Good evening, Miss Stephanie."

He respectfully handed each of them a sleek black envelope.

Stephanie frowned.

"What is this?"

The chauffeur smiled.

"A gift from Mr.—"

He quickly corrected himself.

"From Mr. Henri."

Stephanie opened the envelope.

Inside was a premium shopping card.

Her eyes widened.

Maya looked at hers.

Then screamed.

"STEPHANIE!!"

Stephanie looked over.

"What?"

Maya pointed at the balance.

"This card has enough money to change my entire life!"

Stephanie looked at her own.

Her mouth slowly fell open.

"This can't be real…"

The chauffeur smiled politely.

"Mr. Henri said his granddaughter deserves a fresh beginning."

"And Miss Maya is family to her…"

"So she deserves one too."

Stephanie's eyes became misty.

"They didn't have to do this…"

"They wanted to."

Maya clutched the card dramatically.

"I already love your grandparents."

The chauffeur chuckled.

"The car is waiting outside whenever you're ready."

Maya immediately jumped to her feet.

"What are we waiting for?"

Stephanie laughed.

"You're impossible."

"And yet…"

She couldn't stop smiling.

A few minutes later, they stepped outside.

A sleek black luxury sedan waited beneath the glowing lights of the mansion.

As the chauffeur opened the door…

Maya looked at Stephanie with sparkling eyes.

"I think this is the beginning of a brand-new chapter in your life."

Stephanie looked back at the mansion.

Then up at the stars.

For the first time in years…

She wasn't afraid of tomorrow.

Maybe…

Just maybe…

Life was finally giving her a chance to heal.
