Chapter 95 - Chapter 81 — The Awards Ceremony (Part 2 of 3)

The moment Gamma Squad entered the Grand Assembly Hall...

The noise disappeared.

The massive chamber stretched upward for nearly six stories beneath a vaulted ceiling lined with the banners of every military division and each of the Twelve Great Families.

Thousands of cadets filled the ascending rows of seating.

Instructors stood along the outer walls.

Military officers occupied the lower balconies.

Above them...

Private observation galleries overlooked the ceremony.

Representatives of the Great Families quietly took their places.

The atmosphere was nothing like the tournament.

This wasn't entertainment.

It was tradition.

An academy officer stepped forward.

"Gamma Squad."

"Front section."

David nodded.

"This way."

The six of them followed the usher down the central aisle.

Almost immediately...

Whispers spread through the surrounding rows.

"That's him."

"David Wyn."

"The Champion."

"He actually beat Kael."

"I heard Lord Starwyn met with him afterward."

"My instructor said it was true."

June leaned toward David without moving his head.

"...You know..."

"I liked it better when people ignored us."

David smiled.

"So did I."

As they reached the reserved seating area, several first-year squads turned toward them.

Members of Alpha Squad offered respectful nods.

Beta Squad applauded quietly.

Even cadets David had never spoken to acknowledged him as he passed.

No jealousy.

No resentment.

Only respect.

June looked around proudly.

"I'm sitting next to a celebrity."

Lucian sighed.

"No..."

"You're sitting next to David."

"Same thing."

Mira smiled faintly.

"I think your ego has become contagious."

"I've always been inspiring."

"You've always been loud."

"Thank you."

"That wasn't a compliment."

"I accepted it anyway."

David laughed as they took their seats.

For the first time since yesterday...

Everything felt normal again.

Almost.

He looked around the enormous chamber.

Rows upon rows of cadets.

Future soldiers.

Future officers.

Future commanders.

Then his eyes drifted upward.

The Family galleries.

House Stormrath.

House Ashenford.

House Nightvale.

House Starwyn.

Kael was there.

Standing quietly behind the front railing.

Their eyes met for only a moment.

Kael gave the slightest nod.

Not formal.

Not commanding.

Simply...

Acknowledging him.

David returned the gesture.

Beside him, Nyra leaned over.

"...He's looking at you again."

David smiled weakly.

"...I'm trying not to think about it."

"I don't think that's possible anymore."

"...Probably not."

Before either of them could say more—

A clear chime echoed throughout the Grand Assembly Hall.

Every conversation stopped instantly.

Academy officers moved into position along the walls.

Commander Vance entered from the rear of the stage.

Behind her walked senior instructors, military commanders, and academy officials.

The entire assembly rose to its feet.

Commander Vance stopped at the center podium.

Her eyes swept across the thousands of cadets assembled before her.

Satisfied...

She nodded once.

"You may be seated."

The chamber moved as one.

Silence settled once more.

Commander Vance looked over the audience.

Her voice carried effortlessly throughout the enormous hall.

"Cadets."

"The Academy Tournament has officially concluded."

A brief pause.

"For many of you..."

"It marked your first true test against your peers."

"For others..."

"It was an opportunity to demonstrate the results of months of discipline, sacrifice, and determination."

Her gaze moved slowly across the front rows.

"This academy does not measure greatness by victory alone."

"It measures character."

"It measures integrity."

"It measures the willingness to place others before yourselves."

Her eyes rested briefly on David.

Then continued moving.

"This year..."

"I witnessed all three."

Silence filled the hall.

Every cadet listened.

Every instructor watched.

Today wasn't about announcing a winner.

It was about recognizing the next generation of humanity's defenders.

Commander Vance opened the folder resting on the podium.

"Let us begin."

Commander Vance opened the folder resting on the podium.

"Let us begin."

The Academy crest illuminated across the massive display behind her.

It slowly rotated before dissolving into the official insignia of the Academy Tournament.

Commander Vance glanced toward the senior instructors seated behind her.

"Every year, this ceremony serves two purposes."

"The first is to recognize exceptional achievement."

"The second..."

She looked across the thousands of cadets.

"...is to remind every one of you that excellence is never an individual accomplishment."

"No cadet reaches this stage alone."

"There are instructors who challenged you."

"Squadmates who fought beside you."

"Medical personnel who returned you to the battlefield."

"And families who sacrificed so you could stand here today."

For a moment...

The entire Assembly Hall remained silent.

Many cadets instinctively looked toward the upper galleries where family members watched proudly.

David's eyes drifted upward as well.

House Starwyn.

House Nightvale.

House Stormrath.

The representatives watched quietly.

No applause.

No celebration.

Simply observing.

Commander Vance continued.

"We begin with squad recognition."

The display shifted.

OUTSTANDING SQUAD PERFORMANCE

"The Academy believes individual talent is important."

"But history has never been changed by individuals."

"It has always been changed by teams."

One by one...

Squad names appeared across the display.

Each squad rose as their name was called.

Applause echoed throughout the chamber.

Delta Squad.

Vanguard Squad.

Alpha Squad.

Epsilon Squad.

Each received respectful recognition before returning to their seats.

Then—

Commander Vance looked toward the front row.

"Gamma Squad."

The applause immediately grew louder.

David exchanged a glance with Lucian.

Lucian simply nodded.

The six members of Gamma Squad stood together.

Commander Vance looked directly at them.

"Gamma Squad was assembled later than any other First-Year squad."

"Several instructors questioned whether the team possessed sufficient time to develop operational cohesion."

A brief pause.

"The results speak for themselves."

The display behind her changed again.

Mission statistics appeared.

Mission Success Rate — 100%

Cadet Survival Rate — 100%

Primary Objectives Completed — 100%

A murmur swept through the hall.

Many cadets hadn't realized the numbers were that impressive.

Commander Vance continued.

"During Operation Kharos Vale..."

"Gamma Squad exceeded every projected combat metric."

"They completed objectives ahead of schedule."

"They demonstrated exceptional adaptability."

"And they accomplished something few First-Year squads have ever achieved."

Another pause.

"They returned..."

"...with every member alive."

The applause became even louder.

David glanced sideways.

Lucian stood proudly.

Mira smiled softly.

Castiel remained composed.

Nyra looked genuinely happy.

June...

Was trying very hard not to wave.

Lucian quietly whispered...

"Don't."

"...I'm not."

"You were thinking about it."

"...Maybe."

Commander Vance almost smiled.

Almost.

"The Academy recognizes Gamma Squad for extraordinary teamwork."

"Congratulations."

The six of them saluted together.

Then resumed their seats.

June leaned toward David.

"...That sounded impressive."

"It was."

"I know."

"I was there."

David laughed quietly.

"So was I."

Commander Vance turned another page.

"The next recognition is awarded only when a cadet demonstrates exceptional ability beyond standard evaluation."

A murmur spread through the Assembly Hall.

"This commendation is not presented every year."

"It is awarded at the discretion of the Academy faculty."

Several cadets exchanged curious glances.

David leaned slightly toward June.

"...Any idea?"

June shrugged.

"Nope."

Commander Vance looked toward the front rows.

"This year's recipient consistently demonstrated exceptional strategic reasoning..."

"...creative battlefield problem-solving..."

"...and the ability to inspire those around him under extreme combat conditions."

A pause.

She looked directly at Gamma Squad.

"Cadet June Kade."

June blinked once.

Then looked over both shoulders.

"...Me?"

Laughter spread through the Assembly Hall.

Commander Vance nodded.

"You."

June stood.

"...Well..."

"I was not expecting that."

David grinned.

"Now you're surprised."

"I really am."

As June approached the stage, Commander Vance removed a small silver medal from the presentation case.

She handed it to him.

"The Academy recognizes your ability to solve problems others often overlook."

"You ranked third in the First-Year written examinations."

"You consistently demonstrated unconventional tactical thinking."

"And..."

A faint pause.

"...you reminded both your squad and this Academy that morale is a combat multiplier."

The room chuckled softly.

June rubbed the back of his neck.

"I honestly thought you were going to tell me to stop talking."

Commander Vance's expression remained perfectly neutral.

"That recommendation was discussed."

The Assembly Hall burst into laughter.

Even several instructors couldn't suppress their smiles.

June laughed.

"...Fair enough."

Commander Vance extended her hand.

"Congratulations, Cadet."

June shook it proudly.

"Thank you, Commander."

As he returned to his seat, David smiled.

"I thought you already got all your awards."

June looked down at the medal.

"...Apparently I had one more."

Lucian folded his arms.

"You earned it."

Nyra nodded.

"You really did."

Mira smiled warmly.

"I'm happy for you."

Even Castiel spoke quietly.

"...Congratulations."

June looked around at all of them.

For once...

He didn't have a joke.

"...Thanks."

Commander Vance allowed the applause to settle.

June into his seat, still studying the medal in his hands before carefully slipping it into his pocket.

A faint smile remained on his face.

Commander Vance closed the presentation case.

Her expression gradually became more serious.

"The commendations presented today recognize excellence in individual disciplines."

She looked across the Assembly Hall.

"The next recognition..."

A deliberate pause.

"...represents the culmination of your entire first academic year."

Every cadet instinctively sat a little straighter.

The enormous display behind her faded to black.

Then—

New words slowly appeared.

FIRST-YEAR ACADEMY RANKINGS

A wave of whispers spread throughout the Assembly Hall.

Commander Vance waited patiently.

When the room finally became silent again...

She spoke.

"These rankings are not determined by tournament placement alone."

"They represent your complete evaluation throughout the academic year."

"Combat performance."

"Mission performance."

"Leadership."

"Academic achievement."

"Strategic aptitude."

"Discipline."

"And conduct."

"Together..."

"...they determine your final standing within the Academy."

She looked toward the massive display.

"We will now recognize..."

"...the Top Ten cadets..."

"...of the First-Year Class."

The room became completely silent.

Even June stopped smiling.

Everyone waited.

The first name was about to appear...
