On the same night inside Xu Chen's villa hallway.
The question entered the silence quietly.
"Am I staying in the guest room tonight?"
Xu Chen's entire body went still.
Not because he lacked an answer.
Because he had one immediately.
And that terrified him slightly.
Aum stood close enough that Xu Chen could still feel the warmth of his breath against his mouth from the last kiss. One hand remained spread gently against the center of Xu Chen's back while the other rested near his waist, fingers occasionally shifting unconsciously whenever Xu Chen breathed too sharply.
Which was happening frequently now.
The villa had become impossibly quiet around them.
Outside, wind moved softly through the mountain trees beyond the windows. Somewhere far downhill, faint festival music still drifted upward from Dali, blurred by distance and night air.
Inside the house, the silence waited.
Xu Chen looked at Aum steadily.
The problem was that Aum had asked the question honestly.
No manipulation.
No hidden expectation.
No pressure.
Just wanting to know.
And somehow that made the answer infinitely more dangerous to speak aloud.
Xu Chen released a slow breath.
"You really chose tonight to become fearless, huh."
Aum tilted his head slightly.
"I am not fearless."
Xu Chen almost smiled.
"No?"
Aum's gaze remained fixed entirely on him.
"I am simply less willing to move away from things I want."
The sentence hit Xu Chen hard enough that warmth spread instantly beneath his skin again.
God.
There needed to be laws against Aum sounding like this.
Xu Chen closed his eyes briefly.
"That answer did not help your case."
"I was not attempting strategic improvement."
"That's somehow worse."
Aum watched him carefully for another moment.
Then, quieter:
"You have not answered the question."
Xu Chen laughed softly under his breath.
Barely surviving.
Because the truthful answer had already existed long before Aum asked it.
The moment Xu Chen brought him back to the villa tonight, part of him already knew.
Knew he would not want distance.
Knew the guest room would feel wrong.
Knew something irreversible had happened hours ago beneath lantern light and drifting festival music in that courtyard restaurant.
Xu Chen opened his eyes again slowly.
Then answered honestly.
"If you sleep in the guest room tonight," he said quietly, "I don't think either of us is actually going to sleep."
Silence.
Aum became completely still afterward.
Xu Chen felt the exact moment the meaning reached him fully.
Not confusion.
Not shock.
Something warmer.
Something that looked dangerously close to relief.
Xu Chen's chest tightened painfully at the sight.
Aum stepped slightly closer again instinctively.
There was almost no space left between them now.
"You want me near you."
Not a question.
Xu Chen looked at him helplessly for one exhausted second.
"Yes."
The word settled into the villa softly.
And stayed there.
Neither moved afterward.
Xu Chen became acutely aware of everything at once:
Aum's hand against his back,
the warmth of his body,
the way his eyes softened every time Xu Chen answered honestly,
the terrifying fact that none of this felt temporary anymore.
Aum's voice lowered.
"I think I wanted that answer before asking."
Xu Chen laughed quietly.
"Yeah," he admitted softly. "I figured."
Aum's thumb moved once slowly against his waist again.
Xu Chen inhaled sharply immediately.
Aum noticed.
"You continue reacting strongly when I touch you."
Xu Chen stared at him in disbelief.
"You genuinely cannot stop documenting this, can you."
"I find the responses important."
"That sentence absolutely should not sound attractive."
"But it does."
Xu Chen's pulse stuttered hard enough that Aum visibly noticed the exact moment it happened.
The realization softened something in his expression instantly.
And suddenly Xu Chen understood:
Aum liked affecting him.
Not arrogantly.
Not possessively.
Emotionally.
The knowledge itself became dangerous.
Xu Chen touched his face gently again before thinking properly.
Aum leaned into the contact immediately.
Instinct.
Trust.
Attachment.
Xu Chen felt warmth spread slowly through his chest so intensely it almost hurt.
"You know," he murmured softly, "humans usually take significantly longer before deciding to share a bed with someone."
Aum processed that carefully.
Then asked with complete sincerity:
"Is the current timeline emotionally irresponsible."
Xu Chen laughed hard enough this time that his forehead dropped briefly against Aum's shoulder.
The sound echoed softly through the quiet hallway.
"Oh my God."
"That reaction suggests yes."
Xu Chen lifted his head again, still smiling helplessly.
"No," he admitted quietly. "Honestly? The irresponsible part happened several emotional disasters ago."
Aum watched him closely.
"When."
Xu Chen looked at him for a long moment.
Then answered truthfully.
"The moment I realized separation made things worse instead of easier."
The honesty in the sentence changed the atmosphere again.
Everything tonight kept deepening instead of stabilizing.
Aum's fingers slid slowly upward along Xu Chen's spine now, careful enough to feel reverent.
Xu Chen shivered immediately.
Aum noticed.
Again.
"You respond most strongly when touch is unexpected."
Xu Chen closed his eyes briefly.
"Aum."
"Yes."
"If you continue sounding fascinated while touching me like that, I am not surviving this night."
A faint pause.
Then, very quietly:
"I believe I am also struggling to survive it correctly."
Xu Chen looked at him instantly.
And there it was again.
That openness.
That devastating inability to hide emotionally honest things once he felt them fully.
Xu Chen kissed him before thinking further.
Aum responded immediately now, like his body had already learned Xu Chen's rhythms. His hand tightened instinctively against Xu Chen's back while Xu Chen's fingers slid into his hair again, both of them moving closer automatically despite already standing impossibly near.
The kiss deepened slowly.
Warm.
Hungry beneath the restraint.
Xu Chen felt Aum exhale softly against his mouth the moment their bodies fully aligned, and the sound nearly shattered the remaining structure of his self-control.
He wanted this too much already.
Aum pulled back only enough to breathe afterward, forehead resting against Xu Chen's while silence settled warmly around them again.
Neither moved away.
Neither even tried anymore.
Then Aum asked softly, voice quieter than before:
"Which room are we going to."
Xu Chen's entire nervous system failed immediately.
