Chapter 90 - The Moment The House Changed

The kiss on the staircase lasted longer than Xu Chen intended.

That had become a recurring problem tonight.

Aum stopped moving the moment Xu Chen pulled him close, one hand immediately tightening around Xu Chen's fingers while the other slid instinctively against the side of his waist for balance.

Xu Chen felt warmth spread through his body again the second their mouths met.

Slow at first.

Then deeper when Aum responded with growing certainty instead of hesitation.

The staircase suddenly felt far too narrow.

Too private.

Xu Chen's back brushed lightly against the wooden railing while Aum stood one step lower than him, creating the dangerous illusion that Xu Chen was being looked at from beneath lowered lashes and warm hallway light.

The sight nearly destroyed coherent thought entirely.

Aum kissed him like he was still learning and already addicted to the answer at the same time.

Xu Chen had no defense against that.

A quiet sound escaped him before he could stop it.

Aum reacted immediately.

Closer.

Always closer whenever Xu Chen made those sounds now.

The realization itself sent another pulse of heat through Xu Chen's chest.

Aum's hand tightened briefly against his waist as the kiss deepened further, and Xu Chen suddenly became acutely aware of the fact that they were halfway up the stairs in his dark quiet villa kissing like neither of them remembered restraint existed anymore.

The thought should have restored at least some rationality.

Instead Xu Chen kissed him harder.

Aum inhaled sharply against his mouth.

That sound—

God.

Xu Chen's fingers tightened instinctively around his hand while the warmth between them intensified into something almost dizzying.

The mountain wind moved softly against a nearby window.

Neither noticed.

The entire villa seemed suspended around them now.

Aum pulled back only enough to breathe properly afterward, forehead resting lightly against Xu Chen's shoulder while both of them tried unsuccessfully to regain composure.

"You become increasingly impulsive during emotional escalation," Aum whispered softly.

Xu Chen laughed weakly against his hair.

"You are absolutely not allowed to sound analytical while standing between my knees on a staircase."

Aum considered this carefully.

"That positioning appears structurally accurate."

Xu Chen closed his eyes.

"I'm in love with a disaster."

The sentence slipped out before he could stop it.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Aum became completely motionless against him.

Xu Chen's entire nervous system failed instantly.

Oh no.

He had not meant—

Not like that.

Not accidentally.

Xu Chen pulled back slightly, pulse crashing hard against his ribs now.

"Aum, I—"

But Aum lifted his head slowly.

And the expression on his face stopped every remaining thought completely.

Not shock.

Not confusion.

Something devastatingly open.

Xu Chen realized with terrifying clarity that no one had probably ever spoken those words to Aum before.

Not emotionally.

Not freely.

Not without compatibility systems and social expectation wrapped around them.

Just honestly.

Xu Chen's throat tightened painfully.

"Aum," he said softly, "I didn't mean to pressure you with that."

Aum stared at him for several endless seconds.

Then asked very quietly:

"Pressure."

Xu Chen exhaled slowly.

"You don't have to say anything back just because I—"

"No."

The interruption came immediately.

Firm.

Certain.

Xu Chen stopped speaking.

Aum's hand tightened around his.

"You misunderstand."

Xu Chen looked at him carefully.

Aum's breathing had changed again.

Not unstable exactly.

Deepened.

Like emotion had settled somewhere too large inside him to process quickly.

Then, very softly:

"I am trying to understand why hearing that from you altered my entire nervous system."

Xu Chen stopped breathing entirely.

The honesty in him was unbearable.

Aum stepped one fraction closer.

Xu Chen could feel warmth from his body everywhere now.

"You said you were in love with me," Aum continued quietly, like he was still trying to process the structure of the sentence itself. "And my first reaction was relief."

Xu Chen's chest physically hurt from that.

Relief.

God.

Aum looked at him with impossible vulnerability now, stripped completely of the calm emotional distance he usually carried.

Xu Chen suddenly realized something terrifying:

Aum had fallen first.

Maybe not consciously.

Maybe not intentionally.

But somewhere between Dianchi Lake and the bookstore and all those quiet mornings in the kitchen, Aum had already crossed that distance emotionally long before tonight.

He simply hadn't possessed the human language for it yet.

Xu Chen touched his face gently.

Aum leaned into it immediately.

The instinctive trust inside the movement nearly broke him apart emotionally.

"You don't have to analyze this one," Xu Chen whispered softly.

Aum's eyes remained fixed entirely on him.

"I know."

The staircase fell silent again.

Warm.

Breathing.

Alive with things too large for language suddenly.

Xu Chen realized his own fear had vanished somewhere during the last few minutes.

Not because love was uncomplicated.

But because hearing relief in Aum's voice told him everything important already.

Aum's thumb brushed slowly against the inside of Xu Chen's wrist.

Then, very carefully:

"I do not know if what I feel matches human definitions perfectly yet."

Xu Chen smiled faintly through the ache in his chest.

"Honestly? Neither do humans most of the time."

That pulled the smallest visible softness into Aum's expression again.

Xu Chen's heartbeat reacted instantly.

Aum noticed.

Of course he noticed.

"You continue doing that."

Xu Chen laughed quietly under his breath.

"I think at this point my body has permanently chosen you without consulting me."

Aum became still again.

Then very softly:

"I believe mine did too."

The sentence entered Xu Chen slowly.

And stayed there forever.

Neither kissed immediately afterward.

Strangely, the moment had moved beyond urgency now.

Something deeper settled between them instead.

Xu Chen rested his forehead lightly against Aum's while the villa remained quiet around them, staircase lights casting soft gold across the wooden walls.

Aum's hand remained intertwined with his naturally now.

No hesitation.

No uncertainty.

Just staying.

Xu Chen closed his eyes briefly.

The house no longer felt empty.

Not because another person occupied it.

Because Aum had somehow filled every silence inside it without even trying.

Aum spoke softly into the quiet.

"Xu Chen."

"Yes."

"When humans realize they are in love…" A pause. "Does the environment usually feel altered afterward."

Xu Chen laughed softly through warmth and exhaustion and something dangerously close to happiness.

"Yeah," he whispered.

"It really does."
