Chapter 146 - Detonating the Truth

Tony Stark was a man of infinite wealth and unmatched intellect, but he was also one of the loneliest people on the planet. 99.99% of the people who approached him did so with an agenda—money, favors, or influence.

Because he saw through this so early in life, his inner circle was microscopic: Pepper Potts and Happy Hogan.

Even Rhodey and Dr. Yinsen had only barely scratched the threshold of that true intimacy.

But today, Peter's words and his unconditional trust made him the third person to enter that circle. In Tony's heart, Peter's status had already Leveled With Happy's.

Feeling the weight of that trust, Tony took a deep breath and lightly thumped his chest. "You just watch, kid! For this kind of trust, I promise to forge the strongest armor in existence for you and your two little girlfriends."

Peter didn't stand on ceremony. He immediately began detailing the "black tech" requirements for the suits for himself, Gwen, and Felicia.

As the discussion grew heated, Pepper entered the room, leading a wide-eyed Steve Rogers, who was looking around the high-tech lab like a country bumpkin.

"Oh ho, if it isn't America's Newest Popsicle—or should I say, America's First Choice for 'Best Rear End'?" Tony quipped, unable to resist a jab at the Captain.

Pepper took a discreet glance. Emmm... she had to admit, Tony wasn't lying. Even as a woman, she felt a twinge of envy at that legendary physique.

Steve, still adjusting to modern humor, looked awkward. He cleared his throat and shifted the topic. "Director, you called me here for something important?"

Peter's smile vanished. He sat down and signaled for them to do the same. "You're right, Cap. I called you both here because there are a few things we need to discuss. Things that change everything."

He reached into his bag and pulled out several items. The first was the old film reel Howard Stark had left for Tony regarding the "New Element."

As the footage played, Tony's playful demeanor evaporated. At first, he looked indifferent, but as his father's words became more sincere—as he felt the raw, desperate hope Howard had for his son—Tony's jaw tightened. His eyes began to redden.

Beside him, Steve watched the screen with a look of profound nostalgia. Howard was a man of his time; they had fought side-by-side during the war.

Seeing his old friend again made Steve look toward Tony with a sense of... paternal warmth.

Peter watched their expressions. The timing is right.

As the film ended, Peter spoke coldly. "Howard Stark was one of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D. This footage was classified as top-secret and buried in the archives.

Nick Fury had this in his possession the entire time. He knew you were dying of palladium poisoning, Tony."

Tony's face darkened with a murderous intensity. He didn't need Peter to finish the thought. Fury was waiting for Tony to hit rock bottom, to be at death's door, so he could swoop in as the savior and trade this "gift" for Tony's absolute loyalty.

"Disgusting," Tony spat.

Even Steve, who usually tried to see the best in people, felt a chill. What Fury had done was manipulative beyond measure.

In the heavy silence, Peter continued. "But that's not why I brought you here. I brought you here because of how Howard Stark died."

His gaze shifted between the billionaire and the soldier. "What I'm about to say is going to sound insane. I need you to be ready."

He held up three fingers.

"First: Hydra never disappeared. They are alive, well, and currently nesting inside S.H.I.E.L.D. like a parasite."

The statement hit like a nuclear warhead. Steve and Tony's minds reeled. Hydra? Inside S.H.I.E.L.D.? Steve opened his mouth to protest, but Peter signaled him to wait.

"Second: Captain, your best friend, Bucky Barnes, is alive. He survived the fall. Hydra found him, replaced his arm, and subjected him to decades of brainwashing. He is currently their greatest secret weapon—the Winter Soldier."

Steve stood up, his chair clattering back. "That's impossible! Bucky would never—" He stopped.

He remembered the height of that fall. He remembered the experiments Zola had performed on Bucky before Steve rescued him. It was tragically plausible.

Peter looked at the stunned Captain and dropped the final hammer.

"Third: My parents, and Howard and Maria Stark, were murdered. Hydra sent the Winter Soldier to perform those assassinations. Bucky Barnes is the man who killed your father, Tony."

Silence.

The world seemed to lose all sound. Tony's breathing became ragged. His fists clenched and unclenched, his teeth grinding so hard it was audible.

He had just seen the video proving how much his father loved him, and in the next heartbeat, he was told the man who killed him was standing—indirectly—right in front of him in the form of his killer's best friend.

Tony's gaze turned, with agonizing slowness, toward Steve.

He saw the infinite pain and conflict on the Captain's face—eyes that didn't even dare to meet his own.

If it had been anyone else, Tony would have blasted them into dust already. But this was Steve Rogers.

Anger, grief, and confusion swirled into a chaotic mess in Tony's mind. Even his genius brain couldn't find a logical exit from this emotional labyrinth.

Peter watched them suffer, and it pained him, too. But he knew this was necessary. A splinter under the skin must be cut out, the wound bled, and the poison removed before true healing can begin.
