Chapter 31 - chapter 31 The conversation with mother

Since you're writing a novel chapter, here's an expanded version that keeps Gray's personality, his family dynamics, and sets up his future Perception Skill and dungeon adventure. This should comfortably pass 1,400 words.

After lunch, Amy and I spent the rest of the afternoon together playing games. As usual, she cheated whenever she started losing and shamelessly claimed that it was "part of strategy."

Naturally, I protested.

"That doesn't count! You moved twice!"

"Hmph, only losers complain!"

"You just changed the rules!"

"And I won, so they're official rules now."

I stared at her speechlessly.

What kind of logic was that?

Still, watching her smug face somehow made me laugh instead of getting angry.

Eventually, after suffering another unfair defeat, I left and headed toward the kitchen.

It was time for my cooking practice.

At this point, I could already prepare most dishes properly. Under Selena's guidance and after countless failures, I had reached a point where I could confidently cook ordinary meals.

But there was something special I wanted to do.

Mother's birthday.

Unlike Amy and me, Mother rarely celebrated her own birthday anymore. She always spent the day working or quietly treating it like any other day.

So I had already made up my mind.

I wanted to make her a cake with my own hands.

Not because she asked for it.

But because I wanted to.

Just imagining Mother's surprised expression made me smile unconsciously.

After finishing my cooking practice and cleaning everything up, I returned to my room.

"Tonight's dinner is important."

I needed Mother's permission.

I wanted to enter a dungeon.

Of course, even if she refused, it wasn't a problem.

I could always train more and ask again later.

Mother never rejected something without reason.

If she refused, it would simply mean I wasn't ready yet.

Soon, evening arrived.

I headed toward the dining room.

Mother and Amy had already taken their seats.

As always, Mother sat at the head of the table while Amy sat opposite her.

I greeted them before taking my usual seat beside Mother.

After exchanging greetings, I cleared my throat.

"Mom, I wanted to ask—"

But before I could finish, Amy interrupted with sparkling eyes.

"Mom! Gray made an awesome spell today!"

Mother blinked.

"Oh?"

Amy practically jumped from excitement.

"It was amazing! Even Astrid praised him!"

Mother smiled faintly.

"What kind of spell made you so excited?"

Amy didn't even let me explain.

"It's like a black vortex! It swallowed my lightning attack completely!"

Mother's eyebrows rose slightly.

"And then Gray said it converts attacks into mana!"

"It can even drain enemies and maybe become stronger in the future!"

"Even I'm jealous!"

The more Mother listened, the more interested she became.

Finally, she looked toward me.

"Is that true, Gray?"

"And what elements are involved?"

I puffed my chest proudly.

"It isn't a single-element spell."

"It's Darkness and Space together."

"When I created my mana core, I noticed that it naturally absorbed mana around it."

"So I wondered if I could imitate that process."

"I thought about it all night."

"Ice didn't fit what I wanted."

"So I combined Darkness and Space and imagined my mana core."

"Eventually, I succeeded."

"It still isn't powerful, but I think it has huge potential."

I smiled proudly.

"I really outdid myself this time, didn't I?"

Mother chuckled softly.

"My little genius certainly worked hard."

"The approach itself is brilliant."

I grinned happily.

Then—

I suddenly felt a chill.

Mother was still smiling.

But for some reason…

I felt danger.

"But, Gray."

Her smile remained gentle.

"I told you not to use Space Affinity until you reached F-rank."

"Would you mind explaining why you ignored my instructions?"

"…"

Cold sweat appeared on my forehead.

"A-Ah…"

"I got impatient…"

"I'm sorry, Mother."

"I strengthened my body first and asked Astrid to supervise me."

"But I know I was wrong."

"I'm sorry."

Mother looked at me quietly.

Seeing my guilty expression, she sighed.

"Hm."

"Just don't do it again."

"I don't want you hurting yourself."

"And I admit your progress is incredible."

"Most people spend their entire lives learning spells created by others."

"Very few create their own."

"So yes, son."

"You're a genius."

I smiled happily.

But before I could celebrate—

Mother continued.

"But no."

"You are not entering a dungeon yet."

"Eh?!"

I immediately protested.

"But Mom, I'm F-rank now!"

"And Astrid promised to accompany me!"

Deep inside, Mother cursed Astrid for making her play the role of the strict parent.

After a moment, she calmly explained.

"Your rank isn't the problem."

"The problem is perception."

I blinked.

"Perception?"

Mother nodded.

"Monsters don't politely attack from the front."

"They hide."

"They ambush."

"They wait."

"Without a proper Perception Skill, you're just a training dummy waiting to die."

Her words immediately made me serious.

She was right.

Strength alone wasn't enough.

What good was power if I couldn't even notice danger?

After thinking for a moment, I nodded.

"…I understand."

"But now that I can safely use Space Affinity, I think I can create a perception skill."

Mother's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Oh?"

"I already have some ideas."

"And I even have ideas for a movement skill."

"But I'm still too weak to make that one."

Mother silently looked at me.

At this point, she trusted my talent completely.

I wasn't someone who boasted without confidence.

After a few seconds, she nodded.

"Very well."

"If you create a decent Perception Skill, I'll allow you to enter a dungeon."

"But only a G-rank dungeon."

"Understand?"

My eyes shone.

"Really?!"

Mother nodded.

"Really."

I immediately clenched my fists excitedly.

"Don't worry, Mom!"

"I'll create the best perception skill!"

At that moment, Amy suddenly spoke.

"Then I'm going too."

Mother looked toward her daughter.

"If he succeeds, I'll accompany him."

"If something happens inside, Astrid can't always protect him."

"But my rank isn't too high above a G-rank dungeon."

"So I can go with him."

Then she smiled confidently.

"And don't worry."

"I'll protect Gray."

Mother stared at her silently.

She knew how much Amy loved her younger brother.

And she trusted her daughter.

Finally, she smiled softly.

"Very well."

"But don't underestimate dungeons."

"Strength means nothing if you become careless."

Then she looked directly into Amy's eyes.

"I'm entrusting Gray's safety to you."

"You've never disappointed me."

"So I'm trusting you once more."

Amy smiled brightly.

"Leave it to me!"

"Even if something happens to me, I won't let anything happen to Gray."

"And besides, he's strong too."

"I probably won't need to interfere much."

"But safety first."

"No one knows what can happen."

Mother smiled warmly.

Then the three of us resumed dinner.

As usual, the atmosphere became lively.

Amy complained about how unfair Devour was.

I complained about her bullying me every day.

Mother listened while trying not to laugh.

Eventually, even she joined our teasing.

"Maybe Amy should freeze your neck every morning."

"Mom!"

Both Mother and Amy burst into laughter.

Seeing me pout only made them laugh harder.

The dining room became filled with laughter.

Warm.

Peaceful.

Comfortable.

As I looked at Mother and Amy laughing together, I suddenly realized something.

I was happy.

Truly happy.

In my previous life, I had never experienced something like this.

Not a family that laughed together.

Not people who worried about me.

Not people who loved me unconditionally.

But now…

I had all of that.

Mother.

Amy.

Astrid.

Selena.

Everyone.

They all cared for me.

And because of that—

I wanted to become stronger.

Not for glory.

Not to become the family head.

Not to rule anyone.

But simply to protect this happiness.

Because someday…

Enemies would come.

Dangers would appear.

And when that day arrived—

I wanted to have enough strength to stand before them and say:

"You won't touch my family."

No matter what happened in the future—

No matter how powerful my enemies became—

No matter how difficult the road ahead was—

I would protect this happiness with my own hands.

That was my promise.

And I would never break it.

After finishing dinner, Amy and I bid Mother good night and returned to our rooms.

As I lay on my bed, I couldn't help but smile.

"Dungeon…"

"Perception Skill…"

"And maybe my movement skill too…"

There were so many things I wanted to do.

Excitement slowly filled my heart.

Eventually, while imagining my future adventures—

I drifted into sleep with a smile on my face.

Tomorrow—

I would continue growing stronger.
