Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: Beneath the Calm

Morning sunlight filtered through the windows of the Sect Master's residence, casting long rays across the polished wooden floor.

The residence was quieter than usual.

Since the physician had ordered the Sect Master to rest, Shen Wei had become even more vigilant than before. Visitors were carefully screened, unnecessary matters were postponed, and the servants had been instructed not to disturb their master unless absolutely necessary.

To everyone within Heng Ming Sect...

The Sect Master was recovering.

Only one person knew otherwise.

...

Inside the study, Xiaoyu slowly closed the book in her hands before glancing toward the tightly shut doors.

She waited.

Silence.

Only after confirming that no footsteps lingered outside did she rise from her seat.

Her fingers lightly brushed across the edge of a wooden bookshelf standing against the northern wall.

A faint click echoed through the room.

The bookshelf shifted almost imperceptibly.

Behind it...

A narrow stone passage revealed itself.

Without hesitation, Xiaoyu stepped inside.

The hidden entrance silently closed behind her.

Darkness briefly swallowed the passage before several oil lamps flickered to life one after another.

The underground chamber was neither magnificent nor elaborate.

It was simple.

Almost forgotten.

Perhaps even Yuchen himself had once used it only as a storage room.

Now...

It had become something entirely different.

This was her investigation room.

Her sanctuary.

The only place where Xiaoyu could remove the mask of the Sect Master without fear of being watched.

The stone walls had disappeared beneath layers of parchment.

Every discovery she had made since awakening in Yuchen's body had been carefully arranged before her.

Names.

Dates.

Sketches.

Symbols.

Questions.

Some papers had been rewritten so many times that the ink beneath could barely be recognized.

Thin crimson threads stretched between different pieces of evidence, forming a web that grew more complicated with each passing day.

Xiaoyu slowly walked toward the center wall.

Her eyes wandered across every clue.

Elder Gu Liang.

Killed during the succession ceremony.

Elder Luo.

Silenced before revealing the truth.

The Hidden Tunnel.

Who built it?

Where else does it lead?

The Anonymous Letters.

Who keeps sending them?

Why do they believe Yuchen understands?

The Symbol.

Appearing again and again...

Yet meaning unknown.

Her gaze shifted toward another section.

Li Jianghong.

Hero of the comic.

Childhood friend of Yuchen.

Reason their friendship ended...

Unknown.

Xiaoyu remained silent.

When she first arrived in this world, she believed she already knew the story.

She had read the comic countless times.

She knew who lived.

Who died.

Who would become heroes.

Who would become villains.

At least...

She thought she did.

Slowly, she picked up her brush.

On one side of the wall, she wrote.

The Story I Thought I Knew

Beneath it...

Yuchen.

Villain.

Li Jianghong.

Hero.

Enemies.

Nothing more.

That was all the comic had ever shown.

Simple.

Direct.

A story divided cleanly between good and evil.

She stared at those words for a long moment before turning to the opposite side.

Her brush moved once more.

Reality

Below it, she wrote carefully.

Li Jianghong grew up in Heng Ming Sect.

He and Yuchen were once close friends.

Someone continues sending mysterious letters.

Yuchen's fragmented memories.

Masked figures kneeling before Yuchen.

The symbol.

When she finally stepped back...

The difference between the two sides was impossible to ignore.

The comic had never mentioned any of this.

Not Li Jianghong's past.

Not the friendship.

Not the strange letters.

Not the memories that seemed to surface without warning.

Every new discovery pushed the comic further away from reality.

Yet...

One thing still lingered within her heart.

According to the comic...

Li Jianghong would one day become Yuchen's greatest enemy.

She lowered her gaze.

"...Can fate really be changed?"

The question escaped her lips almost unconsciously.

The Li Jianghong she knew now...

Was nothing like the one she had expected.

He had protected her.

Questioned her only when necessary.

Even after Yuchen's personality changed, Li had remained beside him without demanding answers.

She wanted to trust him.

She truly did.

But every time she reached that conclusion...

The ending of the comic resurfaced in her mind.

Perhaps the comic had hidden many truths.

Perhaps it had misunderstood Yuchen entirely.

But...

What if that ending remained unchanged?

What if one day, circumstances forced Li Jianghong to stand against Yuchen once again?

She slowly closed her eyes.

"I can't gamble with the future..."

Until she uncovered the reason behind everything...

Some truths would remain inside this room.

Known only to her.

She carefully pinned another blank sheet beneath the sketch of the mysterious symbol.

Instead of writing an answer...

She wrote another question.

What are they waiting for?

Silence answered.

The chamber once again fell into complete stillness.

...

A knock echoed from outside.

"Young Master."

Shen Wei's calm voice broke the silence.

Xiaoyu extinguished the nearest oil lamp before activating the hidden mechanism.

The stone passage closed behind her without leaving the slightest trace.

Moments later...

She had once again become the dignified Sect Master of Heng Ming Sect.

"Enter."

The door opened.

Shen Wei stepped inside before bowing respectfully.

"The elders have completed preparations for today's council meeting."

Xiaoyu nodded.

"I understand."

Shen Wei hesitated briefly before speaking again.

"Senior Young Master Tianyu has requested an audience with the Sect Master."

Xiaoyu's fingers paused upon the desk.

Tianyu...

After the assassination during the succession ceremony, Heng Ming Sect had fallen into unprecedented turmoil.

While the elders focused on investigating the attack and stabilizing the sect, Tianyu had accepted a mission entrusted to him by the Council of Elders.

His task had been to inspect the outer branches of Heng Ming Sect, strengthen their defenses against possible attacks, and reassure the branch leaders while investigating suspicious movements beyond the sect's borders.

Only after completing that responsibility had he returned.

Xiaoyu slowly placed the report in her hands aside.

"Invite him in."

"As you command."

Shen Wei quietly withdrew.

The study fell silent once more.

For reasons she could not explain...

Xiaoyu found herself unconsciously sitting straighter.

She had met Tianyu before.

Yet this meeting felt different.

The first time they met...

Everything had been chaos.

Assassins.

Bloodshed.

The deaths of elders.

There had been no opportunity to truly observe him.

Today...

Would be the first calm conversation between the two brothers.

A moment later...

Another knock sounded.

"The Senior Young Master has arrived."

"Let him enter."

The doors opened slowly.

Tianyu walked into the study with steady, unhurried steps.

He had already changed into the formal robes of Heng Ming Sect befitting his status.

His expression remained composed, his posture perfectly upright.

Everything about him reflected years of discipline.

Reaching the center of the room, he respectfully cupped his fists.

"This disciple greets the Sect Master."

Xiaoyu looked at him quietly.

An elder brother...

Paying his respects to his younger brother.

Not because of affection.

Not because of blood.

But because the person before him now occupied the highest position within Heng Ming Sect.

"...Rise."

"Thank you, Sect Master."

Tianyu stood.

Neither brother spoke.

The silence that settled between them did not belong to Xiaoyu.

It belonged to Yuchen and Tianyu.

A silence shaped over many years.

Not by hatred...

But by distance.

Two brothers raised beneath the same roof.

One praised as the pride of the sect.

The other growing increasingly withdrawn.

Neither had ever learned how to reach the other.

Now...

Xiaoyu had stepped into that silence.

And she did not know how to break it.The silence lingered.

Neither brother appeared eager to disturb it.

Tianyu stood patiently before the desk, his expression as composed as ever. His eyes remained lowered—not out of submission, but out of respect for the office Yuchen now held.

Only after several moments did he finally speak.

"I have fulfilled the Council's instructions."

His voice was calm and steady.

"The outer branches have strengthened their patrols. Additional disciples have been assigned to the vulnerable trade routes, and the branch leaders have begun conducting identity inspections for every visitor entering their territories."

He paused briefly before continuing.

"I also investigated the reports concerning suspicious movements near the eastern forests."

"There were traces left behind..."

"But nothing that could be directly connected to the assassins who infiltrated Heng Ming Sect."

As he spoke, Tianyu removed a neatly bound report from his sleeve and placed it upon the table.

"The details have all been recorded."

Xiaoyu accepted the report.

Unlike many of the documents she had reviewed these past few days, Tianyu's handwriting was remarkably orderly.

Every observation was arranged clearly.

Every conclusion was supported by evidence.

There were no unnecessary assumptions.

She found herself reading more attentively than she had expected.

"...The western branch requested additional physicians?"

Tianyu nodded.

"Several disciples sustained injuries while strengthening the defensive formations."

"They requested assistance rather than replacements."

Xiaoyu gave another slight nod.

"I'll have the Medical Pavilion arrange it."

"The northern branch also reported a shortage of spiritual herbs."

"I saw that."

"I've already marked it."

Their conversation continued naturally.

Question.

Answer.

Question.

Answer.

Nothing more.

Neither brother wasted words.

Yet strangely...

Neither found the silence uncomfortable.

Official matters seemed to be the only language they had ever truly shared.

Eventually, Xiaoyu closed the report.

"You handled the mission well."

Those four words caused Tianyu's eyes to lift ever so slightly.

Not enough to be called surprise.

But enough to reveal that the acknowledgement had not been expected.

"It was my responsibility."

His answer remained as restrained as ever.

Silence returned.

Xiaoyu lowered her gaze to the report again.

She wanted to say something else.

Perhaps ask how the journey had gone.

Whether he had encountered danger.

Whether he was injured.

Questions ordinary siblings might ask.

Yet the words never came.

Not because she couldn't ask them...

But because she knew they didn't belong to her.

She didn't know whether Yuchen would have asked.

If she spoke carelessly...

It might only invite suspicion.

Across the room, Tianyu seemed to reach a similar conclusion.

He waited quietly.

Then, after a respectful pause, he spoke.

"The Council meeting will begin shortly."

"The elders have already gathered."

"I know."

Xiaoyu stood.

"I'll head there now."

Tianyu stepped aside, allowing the Sect Master to leave first.

Only after Xiaoyu had passed did he fall into step a respectful distance behind.

---

The stone pathways of Heng Ming Sect were unusually lively.

Disciples hurried between courtyards carrying scrolls and reports.

Servants prepared refreshments for the council.

News of Tianyu's return had already begun spreading throughout the sect.

As the two brothers walked through the mountain pathways...

Every disciple they encountered stopped to bow.

"This disciple greets the Sect Master."

"Greetings, Senior Young Master."

The greetings echoed one after another.

Xiaoyu acknowledged each with a slight nod.

From the corner of her eye...

She noticed something.

No matter who greeted Tianyu...

His response never changed.

A nod.

Nothing more.

Calm.

Measured.

Never excessive.

Never distant.

Simply disciplined.

She couldn't help comparing him with Zichen.

If Zichen carried warmth like spring sunlight...

Then Tianyu resembled still water beneath winter skies.

Different.

Yet equally sincere.

The silence between them continued as they approached the Council Hall.

At last...

Tianyu spoke.

"The disciples seem calmer."

Xiaoyu turned slightly.

"The increased patrols have reassured them."

"It won't last forever."

"No."

"The assassins failed once."

"They may try again."

Xiaoyu's expression became thoughtful.

"I've considered that as well."

Tianyu gave a slight nod.

Then...

Silence reclaimed the space between them.

It wasn't an awkward silence.

Nor was it comfortable.

It simply...

Existed.

Like something neither of them had ever questioned.

Ahead, the towering doors of the Council Hall slowly came into view.

Several elders were already waiting outside.

The moment they noticed the two brothers approaching together...

Conversation ceased.

One by one...

The elders turned toward them.

Some looked at Tianyu with approval after the successful completion of his mission.

Others shifted their attention toward Yuchen.

The newly appointed Sect Master walked at the front.

Tianyu followed half a step behind.

No one spoke.

Yet more than one elder exchanged a subtle glance.

Something had changed.

They couldn't quite explain what it was.

But...

The Sect Master standing before them no longer felt like the Yuchen they had known.

Without a word, Xiaoyu pushed open the doors of the Council Hall.

The meeting...

Had begun.
