Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Second Echo

Kai followed Lira through the underground tunnels. Neither of them spoke much. The Hunter scan had passed, but neither of them believed they were safe. The city continued to shake above them. Dust drifted from the ceiling with every tremor.

Kai glanced at the blue screen floating before his eyes.

"So far, so good," Kai said quietly.

The Echo answered. "You should not become overconfident."

Kai smiled. "I wasn't."

A loud crash echoed through the tunnels. Then came a scream. "Help!"

Kai and Lira looked at each other. The scream came again. Without saying a word, they ran toward it.

They reached an abandoned maintenance station. Several survivors were trapped behind fallen debris while a creature stalked toward them. It stood over seven feet tall. Its body was covered in black crystal. Purple light leaked through the cracks in its skin. One arm had become a long blade made of fractured stone.

The system reacted immediately.

Extreme Caution

The creature lunged. Kai pushed one survivor aside just before the blade slammed into the floor. Concrete exploded around them. Kai rolled across the ground and stood.

His heart pounded. "I can't beat that."

Reginald's voice echoed inside his mind. "Watch its shoulders."

Kai frowned. "What?"

"The shoulder moves first."

The creature attacked again. This time Kai noticed it. The shoulder shifted just before the blade swung. Kai dodged at the last second. The blade missed him by inches.

"I actually saw it."

The creature roared. Before Kai could move again, another person charged into the fight. A man wearing battered body armor slammed a steel pipe against the monster's side.

"Run!" he shouted. The survivors scrambled away. The creature turned toward the newcomer.

The man fought with practiced movements. Every strike was precise. Every dodge was controlled. Kai could tell immediately. This man knew how to fight.

For almost a minute, he held the monster back by himself. Then everything changed. The creature suddenly grew another crystal blade from its back. It struck without warning. The blade pierced the man's chest.

He staggered backward. Kai caught him before he fell. The man looked up at Kai and smiled weakly.

"I guess..." he paused. "...this is it."

Blood stained his armor. Kai looked at the wound. It was fatal.

The system appeared.

Kai clenched his fists. "There has to be another way."

The injured man slowly shook his head. "No." He looked toward the frightened survivors. "If you don't stop it..." he paused. "...they all die."

Kai remained frozen. The man reached into his pocket and pulled out a worn family photograph. He smiled sadly.

"I won't be going home." He folded the picture and placed it in Kai's hand. "My name is Marcus." He paused again. "If my Echo can save someone..." he continued. "...then let it."

Kai's eyes filled with emotion. "I promise."

Marcus nodded once. "Good."

The system changed.

Kai took a deep breath. He pressed YES.

The Veil creature charged again. Kai stood up. Everything felt different. His feet moved naturally. His breathing became steady. His hands knew exactly where to go.

Marcus's training flowed through his body. The creature swung its crystal blade. Kai stepped to the side. Not because he thought about it. Because his body already knew.

He grabbed a broken metal rod from the ground. The creature attacked again. Kai struck its arm. The impact changed the monster's balance. It stumbled.

Reginald's calm voice spoke. "Now."

Kai drove the metal rod into a glowing crack in the creature's chest. The crystal shattered. Purple light burst from inside. The creature let out one final roar before its body broke apart into black dust.

Silence filled the station. The survivors stared at Kai. No one spoke.

Kai slowly looked down at his hands. "We..." He stopped.

A strange feeling washed over him. Something was wrong. Very wrong.

He closed his eyes. His apartment. His office. His childhood school. He remembered all of them. Then he tried to remember his mother's face.

Nothing.

He remembered her voice. He remembered her kindness. He remembered that she always smiled. But her face was gone.

The system appeared.

Kai's breathing became uneven. Lira stepped beside him. "What happened?"

Kai stared into the distance. "I remember everything about my mother..." His voice became quiet. "...except what she looked like."

Lira lowered her eyes. "The Echo took a piece of you."

Kai tightened his grip on the family photograph Marcus had given him. He finally understood. Every Echo would make him stronger. But every Echo would also cost him something that could never be replaced.

Far above them, another Hunter scan swept across the broken city. This time, it stopped exactly where the Veil creature had died.
