Dawn broke beneath a sky the color of ash. From the hill overlooking the city, Kai, Lira, and Mira stood in silence.
No one spoke.
The city below no longer looked abandoned. It looked under siege. Sirens echoed between shattered buildings. Smoke rose in thick columns across multiple districts. In the distance, explosions rolled through the streets like distant thunder.
Kai frowned. "What happened?"
Mira adjusted a cracked pair of binoculars. "There are people down there. A lot of them." She handed them to Kai.
Kai raised the binoculars. What he saw made his expression tighten. Civilians were running through the streets in panic. Some carried children. Others supported the wounded. Hunters had formed defensive lines at major intersections, trying to hold back the chaos.
But it was already too late.
Beyond the broken skyline, the Veil had opened wider than ever before. Dark rift-like cracks hung in the air, tearing reality itself. From them, creatures poured into the city. Some crawled across walls. Others dropped from collapsed buildings. A massive beast tore through abandoned vehicles like paper, its roar shaking the street below.
Kai lowered the binoculars slowly. "This wasn't happening yesterday."
Lira's silver ribbon shimmered faintly in the wind. "The Veil is expanding. It's no longer isolated breaches. It's swallowing districts."
Another explosion rocked the distance. A building collapsed entirely. Dust rose like a wave.
Kai's gaze dropped to the civilians again. "We have to help them."
Mira turned sharply. "Are you serious? There are Hunters everywhere. They're searching for you."
Kai didn't hesitate. "I know. If we stay here and do nothing, people die."
Silence followed. Lira studied him carefully. There was no confusion in his eyes. No debate. Only certainty.
She nodded once. "Then we help."
Mira sighed heavily. "I knew you were going to say that." She tightened her backpack strap. "If I die, I'm haunting both of you."
For the first time that morning, Kai almost smiled. Almost.
Then a familiar blue screen flickered into existence before his eyes.

Kai stared at the screen. Then slowly closed it. His eyes moved back to the city below. People were screaming. Running. Dying.
A soft wind passed over the hill. Kai lowered the binoculars completely. "I understand." He turned toward the city. But his voice didn't match his calm expression. "I still have to go."
Lira stepped forward. "I'm with you."
Mira groaned. "Of course you are." She adjusted her gear. "Let's go save a city we don't even live in."
The three of them began moving down the hill. The closer they got, the louder the chaos became. Smoke thickened the air. Metal screamed in the distance.
Then a child's cry cut through everything.
A little girl stood alone in the middle of a shattered street. No older than eight. She clutched a worn stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest. She was frozen in fear. Unable to move.
Behind her, a Veil Beast emerged from the smoke. Its claws scraped across concrete. It locked onto her. And charged.
Lira's voice sharpened. "Kai!"
Kai didn't respond. He was already running.
Kai moved before thought could catch up with him. The street between them and the child was long. Too long. The Veil Beast was faster. Its massive limbs struck the ground, cracking concrete with every step. The little girl remained frozen, clutching her stuffed rabbit tighter. She couldn't even scream anymore.
Kai ran harder. The voices inside him stirred immediately.
Reginald spoke first. Speed increase. Angle correction. Left flank.
Marcus followed. Timing is critical. One strike window detected.
Then the Unknown Echo whispered. Break it. Take control. End it quickly.
Kai's vision sharpened. The world slowed in fragments. Rain. Dust. Falling debris. The Beast's movement lines became clearer in his mind.
He slid across broken pavement. The steel pipe was already in his hand. The Beast raised its claw. Kai stepped in.
Impact. The pipe struck its forearm mid-swing. A sharp crack echoed. The Beast roared and staggered slightly.
But it was not enough. Its other arm swung toward him. Kai barely dodged. The wind pressure alone knocked him back. He skidded across the ground.
"Kai!" Lira shouted from behind.
Mira was already pulling something from her bag. "I can slow it down, but not for long!"
She threw a small device forward. It hit the ground and released a pulse of distorted light. The Beast hesitated for half a second. That was all Kai needed.
Reginald's voice sharpened. Now.
Kai moved again. Fast. Clean. Controlled. He climbed onto a broken vehicle and leapt upward. The steel pipe came down hard on the Beast's head. A deep, hollow impact echoed.
The creature staggered. But it didn't fall. Its body twisted violently. A shockwave of force exploded outward.
Kai was thrown backward. He hit the ground hard. Pain shot through his ribs. His breathing cracked.
The voices inside him began to overlap. Reginald. Marcus. The Unknown Echo. All speaking at once. Too slow. Too reckless. Kill it now.
Kai grabbed his head. "Stop..."
The Beast turned toward him again. The little girl was still behind it. Still trapped. Still watching. Kai saw her trembling hands. Her rabbit soaked in rain.
Something inside him tightened. He stood. "No."
The Beast charged. Kai didn't move.
At the last second, Lira appeared from the side. She slashed across the Beast's leg with her silver blade. A thin line of light cut through its flesh. It roared and staggered.
"Don't freeze up!" she shouted.
"I'm not!" Kai replied. But his voice overlapped slightly. Two tones at once.
Lira noticed. Her eyes narrowed for a split second. Then she focused again.
Mira shouted from behind cover. "I can only hold it for a few seconds!"
The distortion field flickered. The Beast was recovering fast.
Kai looked at it. Then at the child. Then at the ground beneath his feet. His grip tightened.
The Echoes inside him surged again.
Reginald spoke calmly. End it efficiently.
Marcus added. Protect the civilian. Probability of success decreasing.
The Unknown Echo whispered. Let go. We can do it faster.
Kai closed his eyes. For a fraction of a second, everything went silent.
Then he opened them. Something changed. His posture straightened. His breathing steadied unnaturally. When he spoke, his voice was layered. Not fully his. Not fully theirs.
"Move."
Lira froze. Mira paused. Even the Beast hesitated.
Kai stepped forward. One step. Then another. The steel pipe lowered slightly. His eyes locked onto the Beast. Cold. Focused. Not fully Kai. Not fully Echo. Something in between.
Behind him, Lira's expression shifted. That was not just control. That was something else. Something unstable. Something dangerous.
The Beast charged again. Kai raised his hand. And the air around him shifted.
