"Yes..."
I smiled sheepishly.
"My talent."
The words felt heavier every time I said them.
Draven studied me for a moment before rising from his chair.
The morning sunlight followed him across the room.
For some reason, that made him look even more dangerous.
"I'd like your assistance."
I blinked.
"Assistance?"
"In my investigation."
My eyes widened.
Then widened some more.
He wanted my help?
Actual help?
Not supervision.
Not babysitting.
Help.
A grin immediately spread across my face.
"Of course."
I cleared my throat.
Then repeated with far more dignity:
"Of course, Your Grace."
His gaze remained steady.
"We'll be partners in this matter."
Partners.
The word nearly made me choke.
"Partners?"
"Unless you've changed your mind."
"No."
The answer came far too quickly.
I immediately tried to look composed.
Failed.
Spectacularly.
Draven shook his head.
Then as he passed by, his hand briefly rested on my shoulder.
"Good."
I straightened proudly.
