Chapter 11 - Hunting-2

Instantly, Raymond unsheathed his sword, the sharp metallic sound screeching through the quiet forest.

The platinum blade reflected the pale moonlight faintly as it emerged completely from the sheath, thin coating of mana already beginning to wrap around it.

The atmosphere shifted immediately.

The White Spiked Wolves lowered their bodies further, growls rumbling from deep within their throats as their glowing murky yellow eyes fixed onto Raymond with heightened hostility.

Immediately, the wolf closest to him ran straight towards him…its claws seemed eager to rip the intruder apart. Raymond raised his sword.

Steel met claws with a solid clang. The battle of sharpness turning into that of strength.

For a moment, Raymond prevailed.

However soon enough, he realised his physical limit. Even if the beast was a low ranked monster, it was still a being of physicality and ferociousness.

Yet, mana flared up inside his body, as it serenely flowed from his core, enhancing his strength to another level. Thus, he pushed aside the beast.

Yet even before he could do anything, his instincts blared. Without even looking anywhere, he dived straight towards his side.

In the next moment, a spike hit the ground with a fatal force, as it cut through the ground and stood leaning. The second wolf had attacked.

Raymond stood up again without even wasting a single moment. His hand shot up immediately, as cold gathered around his palm.

A frozen spike flew from his palm, dashing straight towards the second wolf, halting its advance for a moment while the third still watched the battle like a predator watching the last struggles of its prey.

The first wolf was already upon him. It lunged at Raymond, jaws opened as rows of sharp teeth promised brutal pain.

Raymond ducked, dodging the attack. His grip on his sword tightened as he slashed straight into the wolf's chest.

Blood spurted out the wound instantly as the metallic tang rushed into the forest's air. The wound wasn't too deep as the beast had moved away at the last instant.

But it was enough, as the wolf was distracted from the pain giving him a chance to attack. The wolf growled in agony as blood continuously fell from its chest.

Raymond swiftly dashed toward the beast, aiming to end it in a single swing. His sword cut through the air, moving directly for the wolf's neck.

However, just as his blade was about to connect, one of the jagged spikes protruding from the creature's shoulder slammed against the side of his sword with surprising force.

Clang!

The impact knocked the blade off course.

Instead of severing the beast's neck, the

sword plunged into its shoulder.

Awwooooo—!

The wolf released a howl filled with agony and fury. Its pale yellow eyes instantly turned bloodshot as pain drove it into a chaotic frenzy.

Before Raymond could withdraw his weapon, the beast lashed out. Its claws flashed through the darkness swiping sharply towards him.

Because of how close he was, Raymond couldn't evade completely…

Slash.

"Ugh!"

Pain exploded across his chest. Four deep claw marks tore through his clothes and skin, drawing fresh blood immediately. The force behind the strike even pushed him backward several steps.

For a moment, his chest burned as if fire had been poured into the wounds. But Raymond ignored it. Instead, his eyes remained locked on the wolves.

This was how it was.

The White Spiked Wolves weren't dangerous because of their strength. In fact, individually, they were rather weak compared to many other monsters inhabiting the forest.

If not for the sharp bone spikes growing from their bodies, giving them the ability to wound predators even while defending, they would have been considered little

more than ordinary hunting beasts.

The real danger lay elsewhere.

Teamwork.

Unlike many monsters that relied purely on instinct and brute force, White Spiked Wolves fought together. They protected one another. Covered each other's weaknesses.

Most importantly…They understood sacrifice.

Just moments ago, the leader wolf had instinctively used its own spike-covered body to redirect Raymond's killing strike away from one of its pack members. It hadn't hesitated for even a second.

To them, the strength of the pack always came before the strength of the individual.

Which was exactly why they had managed to survive for so long despite being relatively weak monsters.

Raymond understood this.

He had fought these creatures countless times in the game. If he allowed them to coordinate freely, they would become

increasingly troublesome.

Yet the solution to defeat them was also simple.

"Kill just one and the others would follow soon," Raymond spoke in a low voice, eyeing the three beasts.

Immediately, Raymond lowered his sword.

Then he turned and ran.

The wolves momentarily stilled, clearly not expecting such a reaction. For a second, confusion flashed through their predatory eyes.

Then-

Awooooo!

The leader let out an angry howl. All three wolves instantly gave chase.

Raymond sprinted through the forest, his boots kicking up dirt and fallen leaves as he weaved between trees.

Behind him, the wolves rapidly closed the distance. Their powerful limbs propelled them across the terrain with frightening speed.

Though Raymond wasn't actually trying to escape. No, his plan was something else. His eyes continuously scanned the surroundings.

Trees, rocks, bushes rushed past him as he ran. Then-

He found it.

A narrow passage formed naturally between several thick trees. It wasn't enough to stop the wolves completely, but it was more than enough to disrupt their formation.

Raymond's lips curved slightly.

There.

Without slowing down, he rushed directly toward the gap.

The wolves followed immediately. The injured wolf entered first, the second following immediately after it.

The third came slightly behind. Exactly as Raymond wanted.

The moment the injured wolf passed through the narrow opening, Raymond abruptly stopped. Slamming his foot into the ground.

He spun and silver flashed. The wolves' eyes widened.

But it was already too late.

The sharp blade glinted beneath the moonlight. The sword cutting across the beast's throat with brutal precision.

Blood erupted in a frenzy, colouring Raymond in crimson. The wolf's body fell into the ground with a low thud.
