Chapter 44 - The Downside Of Hot-headedness

The grueling questioning session dragged on for three straight hours.

Cale sat stuck to a rigid metal chair in the main administration building, answering the exact same question phrased a thousand different ways. The inquiry board demanded to know the precise timeline of what went down inside the Nest structure. They demanded to know the biology of how two academy students managed to survive the raw Void environment for two weeks without food. They demanded to know why their standard-issue gauntlets went completely dead the second they stepped through the portal.

He delivered the rehearsed narrative perfectly. Their fall, the immediate separation, the endless marching, and the brutal reality of scraping by to survive. He omitted every single mention of Azrakel.

Val sat in the identical chair right next to him, her story matching his down to the exact minute. They had drilled this down until it was second nature. They weren't going to slip up.

When the interrogation finally wrapped, a low-ranking school clerk handed each of them a plastic cup of lukewarm water and told them to stay put. The door locked automatically behind them.

They stayed in the room for like an hour. Then two.

Cale tracked the harsh natural light as it shifted across the window frame, watching the dark shadows stretch across the concrete floor. It crossed his mind that the higher-ups were actively deciding their fate right now. Val had eventually succumbed to absolute exhaustion, her head tilted back against the wall, her breathing heavy and uneven. He didn't even try to disturb her rest.

The lock on the door disengaged with a loud click. A woman dressed in the dark, sharp uniform of the academy administration stepped inside. It was the Vice Chancellor, a high-ranking official Cale recognized from the tournament grading blocks. She carried a thick physical data folder under her arm.

"Caelan," she stated, her tone flat and completely devoid of emotion. "Stand up and follow me."

Val shifted instantly at the sound, her eyes snapping open as she scanned the room. "What the hell is this?"

"Stay on the bench," Cale told her quietly, his voice rough. He stepped into the corridor before she could even start an argument, keeping pace with the Vice Chancellor's rapid stride down the hall.

The Vice Chancellor's personal office was compact, cluttered with strategy guides, student records, and territory maps. She didn't bother offering him a seat, walking straight behind her heavy desk instead.

"You severely compromised the security of this academy," she began, her gaze cutting into him like iron. "You broke into a restricted Fallen Nest zone without academy clearance. You deliberately blew off a direct order from a senior proctor to stay behind the safe line. Your reckless stunt triggered the premature collapse of the core, causing a localized Void infiltration that directly endangered every single student in your class group."

Cale stood perfectly straight, his muscles locked. "I'm sorry if I caused any damage. But I was trying to lock down the threat level inside that Nest."

"You were pulling a stupid stunt to prove a point," she countered, her voice dropping into a cold, dangerous register. "Instead, your arrogance nearly got you killed and put your whole squad in the dirt. Nine other students were dragged into the Void against their will because you couldn't follow basic rules. Just because the rescue squads dragged them back out alive doesn't erase the massive fallout of what you did."

He kept his jaw set and said absolutely nothing. There was no point in talking back to the person holding all the cards.

"The high administration has finalized your punishment," she continued, tossing the data folder into his arms.

### Academy Disciplinary Action: Caelan Ashford

* **Primary Assignment:** Assigned as a maintenance assistant in the central archives. Responsibilities include cataloging, book organization, and facility cleanup immediately following standard classes every single day.

* **Fighter Status:** Stripped of active combat status. Attendance in all practical combat classes is strictly restricted to **passive observation**. You are explicitly prohibited from participating in group exercises, mock duels, or arena simulations until further notice.

* **Training Restrictions:** Individual physical conditioning is permitted outside of standard class and curfew hours only.

* **Campus Restriction:** Strictly restricted to academy grounds. You cannot clear the perimeter gates without a signed travel permit.

She closed the file with a heavy slap, snatching it back from his arms while waiting for a challenge.

"I understand, ma'am," Cale said, his voice entirely flat.

"The official announcement will be delivered in the central orientation hall this evening. Attendance is mandatory for the entire student body. You will be present at the orientation hall."

She turned her attention to a digital monitor, dismissing him from her office without another word.

The central orientation hall was completely packed by the time Cale arrived.

Hundreds of students occupied the tiered benches, their combined voices creating a low, echoing hum of rumors and gossip. Cale stayed at the absolute back of the hall, leaning his spine against the wall near the exit doors with his hands shoved deep into his pockets. Val was positioned somewhere in the middle of the crowd. He had explicitly told her to stay away from him. This was an institutional execution, and he was going to take the hit alone.

The Vice Chancellor stepped onto the stage. The noise died down instantly.

"Two weeks ago," she announced, her voice echoing clearly across the room, "a critical Fallen Nest manifested within the academy grounds. In the chaos that ensued, a student, Caelan Ashford, initiated an unauthorized solo run into the Nest without supervision. His insubordination triggered a rapid chain reaction, causing the immediate collapse of the Nest and the subsequent localized Void infiltration. Nine of your fellow classmates were dragged into the portal. While all students have been successfully recovered, the cost was immense."

She paused, her cold gaze sweeping across the rows of benches. Cale felt hundreds of heads turn toward his position at the back of the room, accompanied by a sudden surge of sharp whispers.

"Following a formal evaluation, the academy panel has determined that Cale's conduct was entirely reckless, actively endangering the lives of his peers. His punishment is as follows: For the remainder of the current term, he is stripped of active combat status and assigned to grunt maintenance in the library archives. He may attend all combat classes strictly as a non-participating observer. He is restricted from group exercises and confined to the campus grounds. He will utilize this term to evaluate the cost of his reckless behavior."

She stepped down from the platform. The hall erupted into a chaotic din.

Cale stood perfectly still, letting the noise hit him. He heard the sudden bursts of mocking laughter, the blunt jeers, and the whispers intentionally elevated so he could hear every single hurtful word. They were already calling him the library grunt, a washed-up spectator, and a wannabe prodigy who couldn't handle real pressure when things went south.

He kept his expression completely vacant, his hands steady inside his pockets. He didn't look at Val, nor did he look into anyone else's eyes.

A senior student in the front row spun around on his bench, a massive grin plastered across his face. "Hey, Caelan! Make sure you check out a manual on how to clear a room without dropping your squad into a Void rift, you dumbass!"

A ripple of malicious laughter traveled through the surrounding rows. Another voice called out from the opposite tier, "At least the bastard can watch how real fighters handle a blade from the benches. He might eventually learn how to follow an order."

Cale's jaw tightened until the muscle on his jawline ached, but he didn't alter his posture by an inch.

The Vice Chancellor raised a single hand from the edge of the stage, and the chaotic noise subsided into a low murmur. "The announcement is concluded. You are all dismissed to your quarters."

The benches emptied rapidly, students filing through the main exits while continuing to talk over the announcement. Cale remained rooted to the back wall, letting the sea of uniforms drain past his position. When the massive doors finally swung shut, he was left standing entirely alone in the vacant hall. The stage was completely dark. The rows of benches were stripped bare.

He let out a long, slow breath through his teeth.

Turning on his heel, Cale walked out into the main corridor, where the rest of the academy's whispers were already waiting to dissect him.
