We had given the conductor more than the others so we had an entire section of the train to ourselves. Even after paying the train ticket we still have even more. Like I said I was a little paranoid and got as much as I could. Mostly because I didn't know how far we would have to go for safety. We made a few stops along the way. I quietly disembarked and search the place for a greenhouse or a nursery and take what plants there is. If it is edible I would pluck it out and take it with me. After Twenty days of travel we stopped at the construction of a huge wall. The train had to stop and the officers checked how many survivors arrived and what they brought was the them. After that the train took a few turns here and there. We found ourselves in a vast farmlands. By the time we reached our destination we had the most luggage of all the others.
We had to go to the head office to purchase land and have ourselves screened for any sort of illness. When they saw the plants we had they gave us five thousand acres of land to use as a plantation. I had brought with me not just canned goods but plants and seeds of different kinds. Some of the seeds were beans, pumpkin, apples lemons, oranges, coriander, cumin, basil and fennel. I dragged the canned goods to our new house. I moved the stuff to the storeroom and a few strangers walked outside our new house giving us dirty looks. They thought that they could walk all over us till they saw the weapons we had. They left with the intention of returning. We complained about it to the head office and they were told that they will be evicted from the countryside to the other side of the wall if they show up near our property. They gave us angry looks and went back to work.
The kids were sent to school and we went to work. We went through the inventory of the items I had systemically taken from places. I had found in one of the nurseries a few bags of potatoes. Yukon gold potatoes and violet ones. There were turmeric, ginger, peanut plants. I also brought a few bags of fertilizer. We divided the land for each crop we had. I finished planting the entire stock in twenty minutes and the others watered the plants. We kept a section of the property for composting. We bartered a few cans for some chicken and a few goats. We bought additional land for the farm animals.
We ran out of fertilizer so I burned a few logs and sprinkled the ashes along with crushed eggshells into soil. The plants grew healthy and some produce fruits or vegetables in six months. I built us a pizza oven and a pool so we could go swimming when it is summer and skating when it winter. We bought a cast iron stove and a truck. A few medical equipment as well. I would feed once every two weeks. The adults look a little uncomfortable when I did. Sonja inserts a tube into the one selected and they fill a cup with blood which I drink. Then I spend the next few days eating normal food.
We arrived at the market and discovered that our nation has been divided into nine separate sovereign nations now. First is the place we are in right now called Green dale. Next sovereign state was the military regime state of Saber. The other state was the Sin city. The next state was Texas. Next was the machine city that only had intellectuals as a citizen. Then was the free Native lands where people got along with everyone even vampires and werewolves. Next state was scrap yard. The salt flats on the shorelines. The last one was called the Sahara.
We set the table and arrange our produce. Since we had ingredients that was not found in the market. People arrived to buy them. We found that other nations were here to collect the produce since they are unable to do agriculture. They bought things they believe that we need in exchange for what we had to offer. Saber bought slaves. Salt flats brought salt and seafood. Machine city brought they brought an electric car, a washing machine, a dehydrator and a generator. Scrap land brought old stuff that belongs in a junk yards. The other nations brought whatever they could as well.
I saw Cain amongst the slaves and I asked to buy him. He saw me and realized what I was doing. He smiled as the idiot tried to haggle the guy. I ended buying him for ten cans of baked beans and three cans cream of mushroom soup. I set him free and asked him to live anyway he wishes. I returned to my stall and sold peanuts, turmeric, beans, lemons, oranges, coriander, basil and potatoes. In exchange we got a dehydrator, a washing machine, five slaves whom we freed immediately. We also got an old toaster, a bag of salt and a box of live lobsters. From the locals we got onions, mushrooms, garlic and figs. Cain was sitting next to the empty crates watching me the entire time. He explained what I had done. Karolina asked him to stay with us.
We arrived home before the kids arrived from school. They saw that we had new addition and they were happy. We made grilled lobster with beans soup and baked potatoes. Since we had no table we arrange the food on a blanket and sat on the floor to eat. When the kids slept I went to patrol the property. I even got an a kiln and stuff for pottery. I waited till everyone was asleep to began fixing the cast iron stove. In the summers it is agonizing but in the winter it is a gift. Cain helped me fix it. He helped with the chores and so did the others. We worked in shifts as far as farming was concerned.
We were asked if we could find a way to have water all year round and the governor allowed us to build water tanks to collect rain. Before it was illegal to collect rain water but now it was legalized since food was being scarce. I made us plates and bowls so we eat like civilized people instead of dogs. I build a small tank so that we can store the seafood in case we couldn't buy any. We bought wheat and grew those too. We finally built a proper storehouse. We bought sugarcane and grew those too. We began selling preserves along with fresh produce. We made sure to have a fully stocked kitchen. We sold fresh eggs to the neighbors in exchange for meat.
We soon sold cheese, eggs, vegetables and preserves. The other nations would stop by our stalls because we believe in honest trade. They traded us silk, perfume, a refrigerator and a generator, a few slaves, some crabs and prawns. The locals started to harvest rice and it was expensive. We made sure to get a few bags to take home with us. We asked them to keep the rice in the husk so it won't spoil. They indulge in our request in exchange for cheese, eggs and sugar.
In the summer arrived and we started to sell lemonade and orange and sugarcane juice. It was sold out within minutes. A few familiar faces were seen giving us the look of death but they couldn't do anything. The law was on our side. All they did was glare at us and walk away when the officer walked past them. We sold our goods and collected what was bartered. Machine city heard us say we needed a table so they brought us three foldable tables and a few chairs in exchange for a few jars of dark brown sugar, preserved lemons, a box of goat's cheese and apple jam. Salt flats brought us some shrimp and sea asparagus in exchange for a bag of potatoes and goats cheese. Sin city gave us some diamond necklaces and some perfumes.
The slaves we freed didn't want to leave us. They believed that if they left then they would end up as slaves again. They became labourers and worked in our farm. The slave traders were warned about us. Since we were amongst the few that freed them the moment they are sold to us. Then came the day that they came with a few women. The trader saw us and the slaves looked at us with hope. There was one woman that everyone wanted but we ended buying her along with a few more. There was a gentleman that chased after us trying to get her from under us. But the law was absolute. He had to leave her alone or he will flogged or shot. She was grateful that I saved her life. She said she wanted to go home. She made it as far as the edge of our property and was caught by the gentleman. I found her before she was sent to work as escort. He was flogged and she was returned to us. She apologized and stayed with us.
