Chapter 24 - Sorry!!

Y/n

I walked to the office and entered my cabin, settling into my chair. The first thing I did was check Mr. Scot's schedule and go through some of his important files. He had a meeting to attend today.

Picking up the office phone, I dialed his number. After a few rings, he answered.

"Hello, sir. You have a meeting to attend… with Mr. Willson."

Kayden paused. "Oh? When?"

"Hmm… It's today at 2 PM," I informed him.

Kayden sighed. "Okay. Come here, we'll talk about this."

I hesitated, letting out a quiet sigh. "O-okay, sir."

I really didn't want to go, but I had no choice. My body felt heavy, and a dull ache spread through my stomach. As I glanced at my reflection in the glass cabinet, I noticed I was wearing a loose black t-shirt and blue jeans. Running my fingers through my hair, I tried to make myself look somewhat presentable.

Build up some confidence, Y/N, I told myself.

With another deep breath, I grabbed the necessary files and made my way to his office. Once I reached the door, I raised my hand and knocked.

"Come in," Kayden said.

I stepped inside, glancing around. He was alone. Where is Cassie? I wondered.

Kayden leaned back in his chair. "Hmm, so?"

I cleared my throat and walked over to his desk, placing the files down. "Sir, these are some documents you need to review and sign. And about the meeting at 2 PM..."** I quickly checked my watch. "I informed them to arrive early—around 1:45."

He nodded but didn't say anything right away. Instead, he just looked at me, as if he wanted to say something.

"Y/N, about yesterday…" Kayden said as he stood up and walked toward me.

I tensed slightly, unsure of what to expect.

"I'm sorry," he said, his gaze fixed on me.

I lowered my eyes, nodding silently.

"Please, Y/N… look at me and say something."

I swallowed and straightened up. "Sir, do you need anything else? Actually, I have to go and check—"

Before I could finish, he gently grabbed my hand.

"I don't want to break our friendship, Y/N," he said softly.

I hesitated before finally meeting his gaze. "Let me go."

His fingers loosened, and he released my hand. Just then, the office door swung open, and Cassie walked in.

"Hey, Kayden! Here's your coffee!" Cassie said cheerfully as she placed the cup on the table.

"Yeah," he replied absentmindedly, still looking at me.

I lowered my gaze, feeling uneasy. "I'll go check Mr. Willson's files," I murmured before turning and walking out.

Back in my cabin, I sat down and flipped through the files, trying to focus. After a while, I reached for my phone, only to find it was off.

The battery must be dead.

Sighing, I plugged it in to charge and went back to my documents. When I checked my phone again, I saw multiple missed calls and messages—Emma, Kayden, and then… stupid thief and Max.

I put my phone down and rubbed my temples. "What should I tell Emma?" I mumbled to myself.

Maybe I can just tell her I stayed at the office… or should I stick to what I told James?

After a moment of thought, I decided.

I typed out a message:

I went to my old house last night. Because of the rain, I stayed there. Don't worry, I'm in the office now. I'll be there by 8 PM, okay?

I hit send and leaned back with a sigh.

I hurried to the meeting area, carefully placing the files on the table. I straightened them, making sure everything looked neat and presentable. Taking a deep breath, I stepped back to assess my work. Just as I was about to leave, I saw Kayden approaching.

"Sir, the files are here," I said, pointing toward the neatly arranged stack.

He barely acknowledged them

"And I will tell Miss Cassie that she has to attend the meeting instead of me—"

Before I could finish my sentence, Kayden suddenly pulled me into a hug.

"Kayden—" I gasped, caught off guard.

"Please, Y/N," he murmured, his voice filled with desperation. "I said I'm sorry."

I let out a deep sigh, my hands hovering uncertainly in the air. "Sir, please let me go—"

But he shook his head, tightening his grip. "No, please," he whispered, his voice almost breaking. "Forgive me for what I did yesterday. I didn't mean to hurt you."

I swallowed hard, my emotions in turmoil. My mind screamed at me to push him away, to demand answers, but my body refused to move. His warmth, his trembling hold—it was too much to ignore.

"Kayden..." I exhaled, my voice softer this time. "This isn't the right place for this."

"I don't care," he said, his grip still firm but not forceful. "Just... please don't hate me."

I bit my lip, struggling with my feelings. Could I really forgive him that easily?

"O-okay," I whispered, feeling too drained to argue.

Kayden immediately released me, but before I could step back, he cupped my cheeks with both hands, his eyes searching mine.

"Really?!" he asked, his voice laced with both surprise and relief.

I gave a small nod, lacking the energy to fight anymore.

His relieved expression quickly turned into concern. "Y/N, are you okay? You look pale... and you're sweating." He gently pressed his palm against my forehead.

His brows furrowed. "You have a fever, Y/N."

I sighed, trying to wave him off. "Yeah, but don't worry. I'll be okay."

"Wait here, I'll bring some medicine," he said, already turning away.

"N-no!" I quickly protested. "I mean... I don't like medicine."

Kayden sighed in exasperation. "Then let's go to the hospital."

"I hate hospitals," I muttered, crossing my arms.

He chuckled at my stubbornness. "Then how are you supposed to get better?"

I thought for a moment before mumbling, "I just need… umm… chocolate."

Kayden stared at me for a second before bursting into laughter. "Really, my little strawberry-pie?"

I pouted at the ridiculous nickname, but before I could respond, he grinned. "Alright, I'll be back with some chocolate!"

With that, he practically skipped off happily. I couldn't help but smile a little at his enthusiasm.
