Jane Sampson clearly remembered what James Chip had said to them on the way to Cloud Province.
James Chip said he had scouted the location in advance by driving there and that the villagers gave him the impression of being simple and passionate.
However, the reality was far from it.
Jane Sampson listened to the laughter of a group of men outside the window, her nostrils filled with the smell of smoke seeping in from outside the window and the scent of blood coming from ahead. Her head throbbed in waves, and her heart ached just the same.
"Coco, Coco, don't sleep," Jane Sampson whispered, reaching into her pocket and discreetly dialing the emergency number on her mobile phone. She listened to the dial tone, not daring to speak loudly.
She could only try to lower her voice as much as possible for help, fearful that the people outside would overhear and become enraged.
Jane Sampson didn't know whether her call for help would be of any use, but she had to try.
