May is quiet as we walk, her head resting on my shoulder. She's a warm weight, and I find myself stroking her hair. It's very soft.
She sighs contentedly, nuzzling against my neck. "Auntie..."
"Hmm?"
"I love you." She whispers.
She says it like she's sharing a secret, like she hasn't bellowed it many times before. It's sweet, and it brings a smile to my lips.
"I love you too, May." I whisper back.
She giggles and presses her face into my neck. "Good. Good. Good."
We walk in silence for a while, but it's not an uncomfortable one. It's a peaceful, companionable silence. One that's only broken when we arrive at the inn. I open the door, and we file in.
Craig waves at us from behind the bar. "Welcome back!"
"Hello, Craig." I greet him.
"Hey." Roland grunts. He heads over to the bar and sits down. "I'll take a beer."
"Of course." Craig nods. "Anyone else want anything?"
"Me." May mumbles sleepily, raising a hand. "I. Want. A beer."
Roland barks a laugh.
