Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 - Basics of Defence

Author Note:

Sry, for not releasing chapters for such a long time :/ I'll continue this story again from now on

The planned schedule is again 2 ch / week, I'm not quite sure if I'll make the chapters longer or keep them by ~500 words (I'm feeling a little more comfortable with this).

The main reason for the long break was, that I hadn't fun anymore writing, since I was focusing to much on formulating everything out (like the carpet etc.) and it took forever to write a single chap. So I'll focus more on the story and the important stuff in the future, make it probably less slow paced

For those who have already read the past 8 chaps, here is a quick summary, if you have forgotten ^^' :

Chapter 1: Mordred awakens as a child in the Black family, discovering he's been reincarnated with a system.

Chapter 2: World Background Explanation (Mana Cores).

Chapter 3: Mordred casts his first real spell—Lumos—and, after repeated trials, gains system recognition.

Chapter 4: Narcissa begins formally training Mordred.

Chapter 5: Mordred's studies.

Chapter 6: Narcissa teaches him Incendio and Aguamenti; Mordred learns Fire Making Charm (Incdenio).

Chapter 7: He achieves Level 2 in Incendio, gaining the ability to cast it without wand movements, but realizes he's neglected defensive spells and begins training Aguamenti seriously.

Chapter 8: Narcissa tests his fire control by conjuring a magical beast; Mordred succeeds in defeating it.

----

Mordred lay in the courtyard, completely exhausted from the prior training session, staring in the air. There, the open spell tab floated right above his head, indicating the progress he made.

Only a little bit and he would reach level two too, but that wasn't enough, if he wanted to get really strong, he would need to reach a way higher level, since just having more control and being able to cast without wand movement wasn't nearly enough. 'Maybe I should focus only on one spell and become the strongest mage?', but the problem was defense, just having one spell in his arsenal wasn't enough, if his opponent had the perfect counter, he would have a problem, also he wouldn't be able to defend himself. If the other mage only casts a powerful spell, that goes through his spell, it would just result in mutual destruction, even with a weak opponent.

'I'm going to ask Narcissa how to properly defend myself, when she comes back', he thought, laying still on the ground, not mustering the strength to stand up. And so passed the hour, he had to respite.

"I'm going to explain you first the basics of defense, before teaching you the Shield Charm", she said after he explained his wish to improve in this area. "I would have anyway told you later on, but why not push this a little forward. So basically you need to differentiate which type of spell the opponent uses against you, this will result in different ways to counter it.", she explained .

"If the opponent casts a simple charm that works at the target, the best way to counter it is, if you know the direct counter spell, like for Incendio Aguamenti would be the perfect counter. The counter spell helps you weaken the spell, if you are weaker, so even if a wizard a lot stronger than you throws this spell at you, you may even be able to completely nullify the damage."

"If you don't know a matching counter spell, you should use some general counter spells, like Protego. But the margin between you and theirs power needs to be smaller. And then there are charms that work directly on the wand of your opponent, the fire making charm, can be used both ways for example. This will lead to you being only targeted by the result of the spell, not the spell directly, so in our case only fire. Against this a general counter like Protego may help for an instance, but since Protego isn't made to stay over a long time, but Incendio creating fire over a long time, you'll probably run out of mana rather quickly and be defeated. So in this case, a counter spell is quasi a must-know."

"Some spells don't have direct counter spells, like the killing curse, but due to them being instant, you can counter with a shield. Still if the margin in your power is too big, you will still just die. But for now, the best thing we can do, for general protection, is learning Protego. So for this I will require you to attack be with a charm, so I can counter it. Then you will try to recreate it and if you feel a little bit comfortable with it, I'm going to attack you and heal you up till you get it."

Walking a little away from each other and preparing for it, Mordred spoke the incarnation for Incendio, since this was his strongest offensive charm. Well, it will deal contagious damage, but due the difference in power between him and Narcissa, she could keep the Shield far longer up, than in a fight with a opponent on her level, so this was okay. A stream of fire surged from his wand, lighting the surroundings up in blazing red and yellow lights. Narcissa stood there completely unfazed, shouting "Protego" and doing the wand movement, so he could see them and try to copy them. The burst of fire hit the illusory shield and then dissipated in all directions, except hers.

Having seen the charm now, knowing the incarnation and the movement, he tried to cast it for himself, in the beginning nothing really happened till he got the feeling for the mana movement right, then the air in front of him flickered lightly in silver.

Over the next hour he tried again and again until the System finally recognized the spell for him

[ You've successfully learned the Shield Charm ]
