"M-Maverick, what are you doing here?" Karenina asked, as she held his hand and guided him to walk out of the garden yard.
"My wife, shouldn't I be asking you this question? What were you doing in the garden at this hour of night?" He frowned, his eyes flashed with suspicion. "Also why aren't you wearing any coat? Did you rush downstairs in your night dress?"
"I-I...," she hesitated as Maverick had expected, "I wanted to take a walk in the garden because... I was feeling uneasy for some reason... I-I was worried about the scandal issue and—"
"Say no more," he places his warm palm around her mouth, stopping her from saying anything further. "I'm being ridiculously stupid right now and thinking you are lying to me. So, please say no further and turn my thoughts into reality!"
Karenina's stomach dropped. She felt herself drowning in darkness and shame. And there was nothing she could do except for lying to the man who trusts her the most.
