Chapter 7 - Meeting the Locals

As Tarquin and Lexi continued their exploration of Willowbrook, they ventured into the bustling town square, where the scent of freshly baked bread and roasting meats wafted through the air, mingling with the sound of hammering and chattering. The sun beat down upon them, casting a warm glow over the scene, as they made their way through the crowd, greeting villagers with a nod or a smile.

Their first stop was the town hall, where they met the mayor, a stout man with a bushy beard and a twinkle in his eye. His name was Gideon, and he welcomed Tarquin and Lexi with a hearty handshake, ushering them into his office. "Ah, travelers! I've been expecting you. We don't get many strangers in Willowbrook. What brings you to our humble town?"

Tarquin and Lexi exchanged glances, before Tarquin spoke up. "I have recently purchased the manor on the edge of town and have begun renovations to get it back up to its old glory."

Gideon's eyes lit up with interest. "Ah, yes! The manor's history is legendary. I had heard someone was doing this. Be warned, the work to rebuild the manor is not for the faint of heart. Dark magic lurks within its walls, and those who venture in too deep rarely return."

"For now, I have simply closed off the basement, eventually we will look into these legends you speak of." Tarquin smiled.

As he sat behind his desk, Gideon, his bushy beard rustling as he leaned forward, a warm smile spreading across his face. "Living in Willowbrook is like being part of a big, extended family," he said, his eyes twinkling with fondness. "We're a small village, but we've got a community that's tight-knit and loyal. Everyone knows each other's names, and we look out for one another."

He paused, collecting his thoughts before continuing. "Of course, there are the usual ups and downs of life – crop failures, illness, and the occasional dispute between neighbors. But we've learned to work together to overcome those challenges. We've got a strong sense of tradition and history here, and that gives us a sense of stability and security."

Gideon's expression turned thoughtful. "But it's not all easy living in Willowbrook. There are... whispers, rumors of dark magic lurking in the shadows. Some folks say it's just old wives' tales, but I've heard the stories from my own grandparents – tales of curses and hexes that can affect even the most well-meaning of people."

He leaned back in his chair, his eyes clouding over for a moment before clearing. "Despite the rumors, we've always been a welcoming community. We've got our own ways of dealing with the strange and unknown. We've got our own... safeguards, let's say, to keep the darkness at bay."

Gideon's smile returned, warm and reassuring. "So, if you're thinking of staying in Willowbrook long term, I say come on down! We'll make sure you feel at home. And if you're brave enough to venture into the manor's depths... well, that's your own business." He winked. "Just be careful what you wish for."

Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of jingling bells, as the town's apothecary, a wispy-haired woman named Elara, entered the room. "Ah, Gideon! I've brought some fresh herbs for your tea. And who might these strangers be?"

Gideon introduced Tarquin and Lexi, and Elara's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Ah, I have heard that you were working on the old manor! How fascinating. I've heard stories of your kind, you do magic if I'm not mistaken. I've got some knowledge that might be useful to you both." She rummaged through her basket, producing a small pouch of dried herbs. "Take this – it'll help you ward off any dark energies you might encounter."

"Thank you," Tarquin said, "I did drop into your store previously to have a look around. I haven't made any purchases yet but I'm sure I will."

With a nod, Elara left as quickly as she had arrived.

After finishing the conversation with the mayor Lexi and Tarquin walked down main street.

The next place they passed by was the blacksmith's forge, where they met a burly man named Grimbold. He was hammering away at a glowing piece of metal, his muscles rippling beneath his sweat-drenched skin. "Ah, travelers! Welcome to my humble forge. What can I help you with?"

Lexi's eyes widened as she watched Grimbold work his magic on the metal. "You're quite skilled with a hammer," she said.

Grimbold chuckled. "Years of practice make me look good, but it's hard work that keeps my skills sharp." He handed Tarquin and Lexi each a small iron token. "Take these – they'll give you safe passage through the town's gates."

As they left the forge, Lexi turned to Tarquin and whispered, "I think we've made some good friends already."

After their visit to the blacksmith, Tarquin and Lexi decided to stop for lunch at the local tavern, where they met the bartender, a jovial woman named Bridget. She greeted them with a warm smile and showed them to their table by the window. "Welcome to The Ruby Raven, grab a seat"

Over plates of steaming hot stew and crusty bread, they chatted with Bridget about their journey so far. "You're in luck – Willowbrook has got some of the best food in the land," she said. "Even if I do say so myself."

As they finished their meal, Tarquin leaned back in his chair and let out a contented sigh. "That was excellent. Thank you for sharing your stories with us, Bridget."

Thinking about some of the places he may have to visit for information he decided to make a stop at the library, the librarian was a quiet, bespectacled man named Edwin who dwelled in the dusty recesses of the town's library. His eyes lit up as he welcomed Tarquin and Lexi into his domain.

"Ah, travelers! I've been waiting for you. I have some knowledge that might be useful to your quest." He led them to a shelf filled with ancient tomes and scrolls. "These are some of the most valuable texts in Willowbrook – stories of magic and myth from times past."

Looking at each other they smiled at the librarian, "Do you give that same speech to everyone that comes in here for the first time?"

Blushing slightly, he nodded his head, clearly very proud of the collection he had gathered.

As they browsed through the shelves, Tarquin's eyes grew wide with excitement. "These are incredible! You have quite a collection here. Can we take any of these with us?"

Edwin shook his head. "Alas, no – but you can stay here to review them as long as you need if you'd like."

"As I travel, I often come across ancient books and scrolls, do you take donations?" Tarquin asked, "I'm always looking for a safe place for books that I do not have a direct need for."

Edwin's eyes lit with excitement at the possibility of adding to his collection. "Oh yes, we are always open to receiving more documents and books to add to our collection.

As they left the library, Tarquin turned to Lexi with a grin. "I think we've learned more about Willowbrook than we ever could have imagined."

Lexi smiled back at him. "And we've only just begun our journey."

Together, they continued their exploration of Willowbrook, meeting more villagers and learning more about the town's history and its inhabitants. As night began to fall, they made their way back to the manor, their minds buzzing with all they had learned.

As they drifted off to sleep that night, Tarquin turned to Lexi with a whispered promise: "Soon, we'll begin our adventures into unknown places – together."
