A tense silence filled the lavish guest room as Luke processed Ilyrana's words.
They weren't alone.
The weight of those words pushed aside his earlier comfort, leaving only unease in its place. He could still see the seriousness in Ilyrana's sharp gaze, the way her body had subtly tensed, ready to act immediately.
"I'll check it out," Ilyrana whispered, shifting to stand.
Luke shook his head immediately.
"No."
"No?" She blinked at him.
"I'll go."
That made her frown.
"Luke, I'm more—"
"I know you're more suited for this," he interrupted, keeping his voice low. "I know you've got better reflexes, better senses, and better instincts. But that's exactly why I should go."
He exhaled, steadying himself.
"If something goes wrong, I'd rather it be me in danger than you."
Ilyrana studied him for a moment, her lips pressing into a thin line. Then, she sighed.
"Fine. But I'm coming with you."
"Fair enough. Just point me in the right direction," Luke gave a small nod.
