Chapter 2 - The Relic's Price

Elias stumbled through the thick, swirling fog, gripping the diary and artifact ring tightly. The diary, its leather cover cracked and pages filled with Marcus Valen's frantic scrawls, was a grim testament to the archaeologist's obsession. Elias flicked through it, trying to make sense of the chaos within.

"Okay, I've got them," As he flipped through the diary, Elias's confusion grew. "What am I even doing? I mean why does this even matter to me?" he muttered, his voice trembling. "who even Am I? Am I Marcus dreaming about Elias, or am I Elias trapped in Marcus's nightmare? I mean is this even a dream?" He stared at the words, feeling disconnected from both the diary's contents and his own reality.

The ring on his finger, cold and heavy, seemed to pulse with an unsettling energy. "What kind of artifact even is this?" Elias glanced at it, then back at the diary. "well there's no mention of it, damn it." He took a deep breath and put the diary back in his pocket. "If I'm Marcus, why do I feel so lost? And if I'm Elias, why do Marcus's memories feel so real?" he asked aloud, his voice wavering, filled with frustration and fear. The diary seemed to be a mirror of Marcus's tortured mind, but Elias couldn't decipher whether it was his reality or just a haunting dream.

Trying to shake off the disorienting thoughts. "I need to focus," he said, forcing himself to concentrate. "The ruins. Marcus wanted to find Elena. I need to do the same."

Navigating through the wreckage of the ruins, Elias's thoughts were a whirl of Marcus's emotions and his own rising panic. The debris was scattered everywhere, and the sight of it only heightened his sense of urgency. He was searching for Elena, Marcus's lost fiancée, but his mind kept drifting to someone else.

As he cleared away the rubble, Elias imagined if it were his friend Jenna lying there instead of Elena. "What if Jenna was in this position?" he thought, his heart pounding. "What if I had to find her like this?" The thought was unbearable, making his hands shake as he worked.

The imagined image of Jenna, trapped and lifeless beneath the rubble, was almost too much to bear. His hands trembled as he sifted through the debris, each movement driven by the thought of what it would feel like to find her in this state. "I would be devastated," Elias thought, his voice breaking. "I wouldn't know how to handle it. Just Like how Marcus."

As he dug through the wreckage, his hands scraped against sharp edges, Sweat dripped from his brow, and his breath came in ragged gasps.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed through the site. Elias's heart raced as a large section of rubble began to collapse toward him. " damnit No! Not now!" he shouted, panic rising as he scrambled to get out of the way.

In the chaos, the ring pulsed with a strange energy. Elias watched in astonishment as the space above him begun opening like some sort of wormhole, then the ring began to expand even more, and started pulling in the falling debris. Stones and rubble were all drawn into the artifact's storage, preventing them from crushing him.

"This ring… it's incredible!" Elias thought, his eyes wide with astonishment. "It's like one of those magical storage devices you see in games or fantasy stories." The realization of the ring's power hit him with a mix of awe and relief. "It's actually saving me."

In an impulsive moment of wonder, he kissed the ring, a smile spreading across his face despite the grim situation. "I didn't expect this at all," he murmured, his voice filled with amazement. "This is... pretty amazing."

With renewed determination, Elias turned back to the task at hand. The ring's unexpected functionality had given him a boost of hope and energy. "I need to find Elena," he said, focusing on the search as he continued digging through the rubble. The ring's capabilities had not only protected him but also inspired him to push forward.

After what felt like hours of painstaking effort, Elias's fingers brushed against a partially buried body. His breath caught as he recognized Elena's face, pale and lifeless among the rubble. The sight was a gut-wrenching blow. "No," he whispered, tears welling up. "This can't be real."

Overcome with Marcus's profound grief, Elias fell to his knees beside Elena."No, Elena, please!" he cried out, his voice cracking. "I need to get you out of here!"

In a desperate, gut-wrenching transition, Marcus's anguished voice emerged from Elias's mouth. "Elena!" Marcus cried out, his voice raw with sorrow. The emotional weight was almost unbearable as he took full control. With trembling hands, Marcus began clawing frantically at the stones encasing Elena's body. The rubble was heavy and relentless, and his fingers, now bloodied and scraped, dug through the debris with reckless abandon.

"No!" Marcus's cries echoed through the ruins. "I'm sorry, Elena! I'm so sorry!" Tears streamed down Marcus's face as he clung to Elena's lifeless form, his anguish palpable. He buried his face in her body, his sobs mingling with the sounds of the collapsing structure. "I thought I could save you. I thought..."

He gently brushed away the last bits of rubble, ensuring Elena was fully uncovered. "im so sorry Marcus," Elias murmured. "But-but what about me? What am I supposed to do with all of this? Why does it hurt Soo much?"

The ruins groaned and rumbled ominously as the entire structure began to give way. Dust and debris cascaded down, the world around them disintegrating into chaos. The final moments were a blur of dust and despair. Marcus's mournful cries and the crushing weight of the falling stones were the last things Elias experienced before everything turned black.

Suddenly, Elias jolted awake. He was back in his own world, sitting at his desk. His breathing was ragged, his body drenched in sweat. The vivid memories of Marcus's grief and the vision of Elena's lifeless body were still fresh in his mind.

"No!" Elias screamed, his voice hoarse with panic. "Elena!" He bolted upright, his heart racing as he tried to shake off the remnants of the dream. The room around him was eerily quiet, the dream's emotional turmoil leaving him disoriented and shaken.

Elias looked around his dimly lit room, his gaze landing on the diary and the ring on his desk. The room was still, but the emotional weight of the dream pressed heavily on Elias. As he stared at the diary and the ring, he grappled with the confusion and sorrow left by the dream, struggling to find a sense of grounding amidst the storm of his thoughts.

The diary and ring lay on his desk, stark and unyielding against the otherwise calm environment. "What's happening?" Elias muttered, running a hand through his disheveled hair. "Was it all just a dream?"

He reached for the diary, its pages still open to Marcus's frantic notes. The scrawled handwriting seemed almost alive with the intensity of Marcus's emotions. "This can't be real," Elias said aloud, flipping through the diary with trembling hands. "This has to be some sort of twisted dream."

He examined the ring closely. "This can't just be a coincidence," he murmured, confusion etched on his face. "It's just like it was in the dream, but it's right here. And the diary… it's full of the same desperation I felt in the dream."

The room was still, but Elias's mind was a storm of confusion and determination. As he looked at the diary and the ring, he grappled with the reality of his situation, unsure of what to make of the surreal experience that had left him with more questions than answers.
