Sapphire pulled Zayd into an empty chamber, shutting the door behind them with a soft thud.
"I would know, Zayd—what are we?" she asked, her gaze fixed firmly upon his.
Zayd tilted his head, a crease forming between his brows.
"Why ask now? Has something happened?"
"I simply wish to understand," she murmured with a weary sigh, stepping back.
"I do not know, Sapphire," he said at last, running a hand through his hair.
She stared at him, taken aback by his candour. "Never mind," she said, her voice brittle.
"I ought to have known this would lead nowhere. We are awkward, we lack any true spark, and I feel as though I am walking this path alone. I would sooner remain unwed than continue in such a manner."
With those words, she turned and departed, leaving Zayd standing in silence.
He knew she was angered.
