"Then what kind of strength should I have to unlock this Spell Ring?" Chris asked.

"My own Haunter's level is already 60. After unlocking Spell Ring, will its level soar to 70? Or 80?" Chris speculated.

Fortunately, at level 70, Gyarados and Dusknoir should be able to suppress Haunter, no matter which one takes a shot. But if it reaches level 80, that would be hard to manage.

"Wait until all your Pokémon combined can defeat one of my main Pokémon before you even consider unlocking it," Roy said after some thought.

"Defeat one of an Elite's main Pokémon..." The corners of Chris's mouth twitched slightly. This metaphor... no matter how he thought about it, it sounded like boasting.

However, this made Haunter's sealed strength clear—Elite level! At that time, I'll evolve it again, Chris thought. It seems it's only a matter of time before I have an Elite Gengar.

"Thank you!" Chris said sincerely, realizing that he had been expressing his gratitude frequently these days.

Roy waved his hand dismissively. "You're the Teacher's student, so you're also my junior. No need to be so formal."

With that, he handed over another box. "This is my meeting gift."

Chris opened the box to find a purple-black gem lying inside. Its color wasn't due to its material but from the flowing purple-black energy emanating from it—a secret treasure-level Ghost-type item, the Haunted Gem.

"This… isn't it too valuable?" Chris hesitated. Roy had implied that they shared the same mentor, making them like brothers. Yet giving away a secret treasure-level Pokémon item seemed overly generous.

"Don't mention it. If your Haunter wants to unlock spell ring, one Haunted Gem won't be enough. I'm only giving you one. You'll need to find other Ghost-type items on your own," Roy said nonchalantly, taking a photo of the Spell ring on Haunter's arm before casually sitting back in his chair.

A Mismagius suddenly appeared, floating over to refill Roy's tea.

"Besides, think of it as an investment. If you can earn a senior breeder qualification at your age, you're bound to be someone exceptional in the future," Roy added.

"Then… I'll graciously accept," Chris said. Since Senior Brother Roy had put it this way, it felt inappropriate to refuse.

After discussing some business, Chris left. The level difference between them was too great, leaving little room for conversation. Instead of lingering awkwardly, it was better to move on to other tasks.

Chris left Villa, guided by Mr. Dominick. On his way, he saw the familiar figure of Jellicent—a blue, bloated, and floating Pokémon resembling a giant jellyfish. Despite its appearance, it moved gracefully, like a wandering spirit in the mist. Before its evolution, Chris recalled, it had been called Frillish.

"How is this little junior?" Alexis emerged from the next room after Chris had left.

Roy glanced at Alexis. "I thought you were gone. Why didn't you come out earlier to meet him?"

Alexis shrugged helplessly. "Not everyone's as extravagant as you, giving away a Ghost-type treasure at the drop of a hat."

"And you know I can't match a Ghost-type treasure gift! Let's talk after I find one myself," Alexis added with a grin. "By the way, what's your impression of him?"

Roy sipped his tea thoughtfully. "It's only our first meeting, so it's hard to judge his character."

"However, from what I've heard about him recently, he might be a genius in breeding, comparable to Theodore," Roy concluded.

"What do you mean?" Alexis raised his eyebrows.

Ignoring him, Roy continued, "In terms of training Pokémon, his energy is quite varied, indicating that as a Breeder, his focus isn't specialized. However, each Pokémon he's worked with is strong. It's remarkable."

"I'd say he's already close to the level of a Gym Trainer," Roy said confidently. "It won't be long before he actually becomes one."

Alexis's pupils widened in shock. He trusted Roy's judgment completely, but the idea of an eighteen-year-old Gym Leader? That was unprecedented in the history of the China! If it really happened…

"I became a Gym Leader at thirty-three. Compared to him, I feel like I've wasted fifteen years of my life." Alexis sighed in exasperation.

"You still haven't faced your other beasts yet?" Roy teased with a smirk, twisting the knife further.

Chris returned to school with Haunter. There were no classes that morning, but the hallways were bustling with students. With the year coming to an end and final exams approaching, many were holed up in the library, studying hard.

Chris paused. Should I hit the books too?

He shook his head with a smirk. Who am I kidding? I'm already a senior Breeder. What's the point? He was preparing to graduate early anyway.

Instead, he headed back to the seaside villa. Standing in his room, Chris stretched luxuriously before settling in. He turned on a movie, ordered takeout, and leaned back on his comfy sofa, pulling out his handheld console to explore the sights of Kalos in a virtual adventure.

By the way, he thought, let's take a closer look at the attributes of the secret treasure-level Haunted Gem Senior Brother Roy gave me.

Melt · Haunted Gem: When using a Ghost-type move, increases the power of the attack by 70%. Against Pokémon with a lower level, it ignores special defense. Against Pokémon of a higher level, it reduces their special defense by two level. This item can be recharged and reused. However, recharging requires standard Haunted Gems or treasure-level Haunted Gems, with an unknown quantity needed for recharging.

Chris's eyes widened as he examined the gem. A 70% boost in attack power was astonishing, and the added effects of ignoring and reducing special defense made it even more formidable.

Gems were traditionally one-time-use items, but this one could be recharged. Still, the cost of recharging it wasn't clear—it would probably take a significant number of lower-tier gems.

"If I equip a Pokémon with this, Ghost moves will become my ace in the hole," Chris thought.

Brother Roy probably feared for my safety and left me this as a precaution. If I use it with Haunter, even at just level 60, its first attack will be strong enough to rival a Gym-level Pokémon. Perhaps it could even participate in the four-out-of-six rotation during Gym challenges.

Chris grinned, feeling the weight of the Haunted Gem in his hands. It was more than just a gift—it was a sign of his potential.
