Chapter 3 - First Encounter

Skzzz... All units... copy.... have contact... hund.... thous.... hostiles...open fire..... leave nothing alive...

"Captian what's going on. Over. Captian do you read me. Over."

SZZZZZZZZ

In that moment all of the signal and coms went haywire some of the earpieces even exploded from the high frequencies.

Everyone hurriedly got rid of the annoying things, James himself was about to throw all of his on the ground out of frustration, but he breathed in calming himself.

"Status."

"All lines are down sir, there's also an interference, phone walkies, nothings getting through."

"That bad huh. What about the radar any signals or readings?"

"Fried sir, I can't even restart it."

"WHAT!. How is that even possible we've tested those things a hundred times, they can withstand interferences from three amplified radio towers. Shit."

Although he was trying to keep his cool, I've known him long enough to know he really freaking out inside, and this is probably only the beginning.

"Whatever or whomever it is sir, doesn't want us to know it's coming, or for its existence to be leaked."

"Or it doesn't want us to call for help."

It grew silent as everyone looked at me, I could feel all of their eyes on me but I didn't care. The stakes were already high coming into this game and now they just multiplied.

Beep beep beep.... beeb beeb beeb.

"What is that..., where is that coming from."

James' ears perked up, and everyone started checking themselves and looking around trying to find the source.

Me on the other hand I was frozen in place, my hands were shaking, my heart was on the verge of bursting out of my chest.

I slowly reached down into my pocket and grasped my phone still shaking. All eyes were on me as I pulled it. Everyone was deathly silent as I read the name on the call.

[Mom]

"Breath, this is all we've got... you've got this."

James walked over to me, putting his hand on my shoulder trying to calm me down. I answered the phone putting on speaker, I tried calming myself before speaking but I just couldn't stop the thoughts running through my mind.

"He...hello... mom.?.?"

I tried to clear my throat and steadying my breathing but I was shaking too much.

"I've been looking for you for a long...long time."

"Who is this? Where's my mother."

The voice was deep and raspy it was grating to my ears, it sounded human yet distorted as if it were something that didn't belong in this world trying to mimic our speech.

"Your mother is fine at least she will be once you get here. And my name is £€¥₩#¥€£. I'll be seeing you soon young one, don't keep me waiting too long, clocks' ticking."

"Wait don't hang up... damn it."

The phone hung up and James was looking at me with wide eyes, but was weirder was his nose was bleeding. Before I could point it out he handed me something to wipe mine which was bleeding as well somehow.

Afterwards I found out why he had that expression, looking up I saw half of our squad covering their ears. Some were hysterical and others were breathing heavily or puking blood.

What's weirder was the blood coming from their ears, each and every one of them. Just blood small bits of blood dripping from the lobes of their ears.

"What the hell was that, God my ears are ringing and I've got a small headache. It's like someone hit me in the head with a metal bat, jeez. "

James was holding the side of his head, his was squinting his eyes trying keep the pain at bay.

"I... don't know but that name.. I don't know what it was or what it means but I could almost make it out."

"What are you serious, God I couldn't understand a damn thing that's probably why I feel like this, hell why we all feel like this. What ever that thing is it's not human, and whatever it means it can't be anything good."

"I agree completely but that thing called me, knows me somehow and it's been looking for me."

I can't stop thinking about the name and what it could mean. Why... why can I slightly make out what it sounds like but he can't.

"What did it mean clocks ticking."

"I don't know but we need to move fast, God knows what's really out there and by the sound of that thing it's gonna be really bad."

As if on queue, the ground started rumbling as explosions were going off in the distance. Large rivers of smoke could be seen in the sky, and the dangerously sweet melody of gunfire began to sing.

"Looks like the clocks started. GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER AND LETS MOVE!!!"

James took charge helping the other get their barring and gear up. We ditched everything that was useless or would slow us down..

We headed towards the target location, everyone was on high alert. It was hard to keep calm in this situation especially considering all the noise and fighting going on around, yet we've not seen a single thing.

"Hey Serge. do you think it contacted the other squads too."

I know the answer already, I just need to hear it. Please James, tell me I'm wrong.

"I doubt it, that thing seemed heart set on you and you alone, hell it didn't even acknowledge the rest of us. Hate to say it bud but your home might be ground zero, or at least the base of operations."

Damn it that's not what I wanted to hear and you somehow made it worse. Friend of the year am I right.

"Jeez way to cheer me up, mate."

"You're welcome..., listen... what I'm trying to say is your home seems to be the safest place at the moment. Plus look around you every other squad seems to be running into trouble but us we haven't seen a thing since we got here. Believe or not without you we'd all probably be dead already."

"Yeah, guess you're right. Tsk lets hurry up and get to my house so we can end this thing."

"That's the spirit, come on.!"

We kept pushing forward getting closer to my home, without at hitch until we realized the real reason we hadn't had any trouble.

"SIR...SIR!!! We have a problem."

A young man came running up from his position in the middle of the unit.

"What's the issue?"

"Sir, we still haven't heard back from the scouts it's been twenty minutes, and what's worse Drake and Adam are missing. They were positioned in the back to make sure we weren't being followed but we can't find them."

"Damn it I knew we shouldn't have sent scouts in a time like this. They must have gotten caught up in whatevers going on out there. They should've met us at the first checkpoint, if we're lucky they're still there. But what do we do about the other two, they know the situation there's no way they would leave the group."

James was pacing back and forth trying to think of what to do, first the scouts then two of our men right under our noses without so much as a squeal.

"Alright, tighten up the formation. Keep the buddy system but keep your eyes on team next to you as well. I don't want to lose anymore of you. Luke as the highest rank here you and the safest person to be around, I'm gonna have to ask you stay at the tail of the squad and watch for anything out of the ordinary."

"Copy, as much as I hate it, it's not a bad idea. I'll do what I can to keep watch over everyone."

"Good, then let's keep moving."

I moved towards the back of the formation and watched over everyone as we continued on. Everything seemed fine on my end but now with me so far back I was worried whatever was out there would get James at the front.

But we continued on so all I could do was push those thoughts back, at least now we couldn't be ambushed from behind.

And everything was moving smoothly, that is until I noticed movement on my left.

"He...help me."

Is that another person, he come from one of the other squads how did he get here.

I stopped and the man slowly walked towards me. I know it was dumb but he needed help and fast.

He was holding on to his arm a chunk of it was missing... it looked like...bite marks. He wobbled over covered in blood his weapons were missing and his gear was torn and missing.

He reached out to me, just a few meters away. I can... I can help him, bring him back with us.

As I reached out my hand and grabbed his, my eyes widened as I saw no body attached to the other end.
