"Huff huff... no this...I.... what....AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!"
I screamed at the top of my lungs at the sight, a dripping arm in the palm of my hands. So many thoughts raced through my mind, yet I couldn't make out any of them.
I was shaking, I couldn't keep it together, I fell over still holding the hand. I looked at one more time then threw it away, I slowly looked over at where the body was now. My heart was pounding, I couldn't breathe, and my ears were ringing.
The others stopped to see what had happened and froze at the sight. Even James who made is way back to see couldn't move a muscle.
What I saw made my heart skip, it was a creature I'd never seen before. It was sitting on top of the man eating away at his flesh like it was nothing. It's long sharp claws tore at his skin like it were nothing and it's terrifying maw even chewed through the bone like a pretzel.
It was pure black in color with patches of fur on it's body, it's body seem like that of a human. But it had claws and it's and it's teeth were razor sharp. It's hair was wild, and it was hunched over like a gremlin when it stood.
I covered my mouth trying not to make a sound but it didn't matter, I was breathing so hard trying to get a hold of myself.
My eyes widened and I shed a tear when it's pointy ears perked up and it slowly turned to look at me.
It's pitch black eye's were like pools of darkness, and it flashed it's teeth at me, almost smiling at me. It still had pieces of flesh on them, the creatures licked it's lips then looked into the sky letting out a deafening howl.
Like a moth to a flame howls were let out in the area around us and wolf like creatures as well as those that looked the same as this one emerged from the shadows.
They all had blood stained teeth and claws, their low growls vibrated through our bodies as they grew closer.
"Don't, you'll only get yourselves killed."
Without looking behind him he could sense some of the soldiers getting ready to drop their guns and run, although they all listened there's always one.
I slowly rose to my feet and backed away ending up a mere few meters from James.
Then it happened, one of the soldiers dropped their rifle and fled instantly sparking a riot.
First four wolves followed in pursuit catching him before he could even make it to the street light. They feasted on him as he screamed out in agony.
Next shots were fired at the beasts, the wolves were fast but a few bullets and they were out. But the humanoid gremlins were more durable taking the bullets without flinching like they were made of some kind of steel.
Then they all charged at once, the gremlins even picked up the dead wolves hurling their dead carcasses at us.
I narrowly dodged one of them but ended up falling onto the ground and it hit someone else. I could instantly hear a crack as bones broke under the wait of the heavy carcass on impact.
Next thing I knew I was being yanked by the back of my collar, I stumbled at first but I quickly turned around and started running. This wasn't a fight we could win and James assessed that quickly, which is why he was the one to grab me during the outbreak.
We headed to the only place we knew was safe, a few soldiers were lucky enough to break free of the ranks and follow us but of course the wolves wouldn't allow their meal to escape so easily.
They pursued us for felt like forever, some were brave enough to turn giving cover fire so the rest of us could escape. I'll never forget their faces as they bravely slowed them, even cutting a few down before meeting their cruel fate.
Finally the house was in site but something was weird about it, it was surrounded by some type of energy field. It was huge encompassing the house, the yard and even the two neighboring houses.
As we got closer we could no longer hear the screams no longer hear the growls and groans of the creatures, not even the footsteps of the other soldiers.
We stopped looking back in confusion waiting and looking for those things, then James grabbed me by my arm pulling me to continue on.
"Let's go, they did what they could for us. There's no reason for us to let their sacrifice go to waste."
I just shook my head and we started running again, heading towards the front gate. We hesitated once reaching the energy field, that was until we could here the beasts heading our way again.
We ran straight through heading down the path towards the porch, at least I thought we did until I looked behind me seeing James stuck bagging on the field trying to get it. I didn't even hear his cries as he yelled for me from the otherside.
I ran back yelling for him to come through but he couldn't hear me. I could finally see them, the creatures walking up slowly stalking their prey.
I pushed as hard as I could to get back to him. As I reached him one of the wolves charged causing the others to follow suit.
I came back through, asking him why he couldn't get through, but neither of us could make heads or tails of it. Then he just decided this was it, the end of our adventure together. He pushed me back in and said goodbye.
The wolf was only a few meters away from him leaping up in the air with its opened maw. I did the only thing I could think of, I pulled him through swapping places, now I was on the outside.
All I could do was mouth the words I'm sorry as a tear rolled down my cheak and the wolf chomped down on my neck snapping it instantly, leaving me lifeless in it's grasp.
