The moment the door burst open, I turned my head sharply, my heart leaping into my throat as I looked toward the intrusion, and there, standing just a few steps inside the hospital room, was Kyle.
My breath caught as he stood at the entrance, his expression dark and unreadable.
His sharp eyes swept over the room, locking onto Darius and me—our close proximity, my flushed cheeks and his arm still slightly lingering around my waist.
I saw the flicker of emotion in his eyes. Displeasure. Confusion. Maybe even jealousy.
Darius, on the other hand, looked completely unfazed.
His sharp gaze met Kyle's, but he didn't speak. The silence in the room stretched unbearably.
I felt trapped.
My mind raced. If I acknowledged Darius, Kyle would be furious.
He might start questioning things, putting together pieces that would unravel the carefully woven lie I had maintained.
