Chapter 12 - Chapter Twelve - Natalia Petrova

Bozhe moĭ (My God), what am I going to do? Trouble does follow me everywhere… I'm so unlucky. Sometimes I just wish I could be a normal, average person… and that all my problems—even if they mainly revolve around my survival or that of those I love—could stop, even for just one day.

Unfortunately, the days are flying by, far too quickly for my liking! Only three years remain before I have to give birth to Nadia. I still can't believe Aleko will be the father! Anyway… let's avoid topic number three, which drives me mad. The first is Klaus, and the second, magic… which I can't use.

Still, learning magic would have helped me so much—so much! I'm just saying... knowing a thing or two might have been handy, that's all. Okay, I'll stop!

To think, at the beginning, I thought the only ones at risk of dying in the coming years were Natalia, Mama, and Tatko. I hadn't even considered the possibility that Liliya or Aleko might die. It's still hard to believe, even two hours after seeing it.

If I understand correctly, Aleko and Katherine will start sleeping together in about two years—and they only do it once. Aleko dies three months later, followed by Liliya, who takes her own life the next day.

That means I have two years to prevent Liliya and Aleko from dying, three years to avoid being exiled from Bulgaria, and five years to stop Klaus from killing my family to get revenge on me.

(Quick reminder: Katherine is exiled from Bulgaria at 17 and becomes a vampire at 19. So her family dies when she's 19.)

Now that I think about it since Aleko is Nadia's father… that makes Liliya Nadia's aunt, but also my sister-in-law. It sounded better in my head, but saying it out loud feels… strange.

Lost in my thoughts, I didn't immediately notice Natalia's presence. But when she snapped me out of my reverie… I was so startled that I stood up too quickly, lost my balance, and fell headfirst into the lake.

"Can't stay on your feet anymore, po-golyama sestra? (big sister) Maybe it's the age? Bozhe moĭ! (My God!) Does that mean when I turn 14, I won't be able to stand on my feet either? Oh dear…" She laughed.

I didn't answer her, but instead shot her a glare that could've melted ice. I love her, but sometimes she gives me murderous urges—especially now that she's learned to wield sarcasm like a weapon.

Natalia has changed so much since she turned five. Now, at 11 years old, she's grown into a confident little thing. She has Mama's jet-black hair, Tatko's deep brown eyes, and the pale complexion of the Dragomirs. I do not doubt that as she grows older, she'll become even more beautiful than she already is.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, eager to shift the conversation.

Because, much to my dismay, her sarcasm is leagues better than mine... not that I'd admit it out loud.

"I wanted to see how you were doing. I saw Liliya pass by earlier, but not you, so I thought I'd check to see what was going on."

"Natalia… if I didn't know you better, I might think you were worried about me."

"Are you sure about that?" She quipped back without missing a beat.

"Sure about what?"

"About knowing me…"

How does she manage to tear me down and lift me at the same time? She's not human, I swear.

"Why are you smiling like that? Thinking about your skŭpa malka sestra? (dear little sister)" She teased again.

"Yes… imagining you burning. What a dream!"

"Well, bravo… I knew you didn't love me… Gorkata az! (Poor me!) Sniff…"

"Stop saying such nonsense! Come here and hug your golyama sestra skŭpa! (beloved big sister!)" I called out, running toward her.

"Ne! (No!) Don't come near me! Katerina, you're soaking wet! KATERINA! I'm not joking! Ne me dokosvaĭ! (Don't touch me!) NO!" She started running in the opposite direction, desperate to escape.

Unfortunately for her, I'm pretty fast. No, I'm not bragging… and no, I don't remember that embarrassing lake incident from when I was 10 or any of the other times we came here after that.

I chased her around the lake for about 15 minutes before finally collapsing onto the ground, panting for air.

No, I'm not tired at all. This is a strategic retreat… to surprise Natalia when she least expects it. What? I'm dry now! Laĭna! (Damn it!) One day, I'll get her… one day!

Wow, I miss TV. For me to repeat the MAAF commercial slogan out loud… Oh, wait! If I survive all this, I could claim I came up with those slogans and get rich!

Note to self: Remember all the successful slogans. First, there's MAAF: 'I'll get them one day, I'll get them!' Then Point S: 'No stress, there's Point S!' Next… Feu Vert: 'Feu Vert, the expert's touch!'… and Haribo: 'Haribo makes life sweeter, for kids and grown-ups alike!'

… Thinking about this makes me hungry. I miss candy.
