Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Magic Studies part 1

(Hi Gruffe here! I will be changing how I mark when Bellz and Urpie communicate or anyone having inner thought. Instead of Writing it like this with italics "Hey there." I will just mark it instead with Like that instead)

A couple of days after the birthday celebration I was laying in my bed thinking about everything that they told me about The Republic and the Kingdom and how I had to keep the information about myself hidden. But also mother. SSS ranked Fire magic? How powerful was that compared to others. I didn't really have anything to compare it to, I had seen some of mothers magic through out the years. But mostly just simple things such as lighting a fire or candle.

Sure I had seen the devastation she had caused from arguing with father last year and how she had demonstrated instinctual magic.

But other then that I wasn't aware of what she was capable of, and in some ways it scared me

. I called out to her as she had been silent all day. The information we got had affected her as well. She had told me that she had somethings to think about and had been somewhat avoiding me these last couple of days. Well avoiding was hard but more like she had been ignoring me.

In some ways it had been kind of nice not having a voice in the back of my head. Sure I had accepted her as a part of me and my trust in her had grown over the year. But the feeling of hearing another persons voice was still to reminiscence of my illness in my past life.

I got as an answer. She sounded exhausted and almost depressed.

She went silent again for a bit before she said.

I closed my eyes and as I focused my thoughts inwards I found myself in the empty space we had first meet last year. There in the middle sat Urpie with her knees under her chin hugging her legs.

"What happened?" I asked as I sat down next to her. She gave me a quick look before she returned her gaze out into the white void.

"Remember how I talked about the ability I have?" I nodded. "Well as I have realized over the last year I am quite limited in this world but in my past life I could read every ones thoughts and even if I tried hard enough I could implant thoughts and ideas in others minds."

"What? That's...kind of scary!"

"That is why I had to hide most of my powers from people outside of my family. As you know the Sami was or is nomadic people. But we also meet people from other families as we herded our reindeers from mountain to coast. And at the coast as we stayed there over the winter we would meet traders from the south or people arriving by the sea. I had to make sure that no one knew of my abilities but the memories that I just got back was...my uncle he...wanted me to abuse my power...the memory is still foggy but he betrayed me I think...it's just that I feel like you or rather us having to hide some of our truths again just feels as if history is repeating." Her voice was shaky as she told me some of her past.

"The only persons mind I can read is yours. Sure I can talk to other peoples minds if I really focus as you know but other then that I feel like I can't hear or see sometimes. Like I am diving deep into the sea as I try to find my way in its limited darkness. I used to know who to trust...well...maybe to trust...but now that this feeling of paranoia of there being people out there wanting to hurt us it just...I am just scared." She started to cry as the more she told me of her feelings. This last year she had seemed so confident and strong but here she was lost and scared.

I wrapped my arms around her and gave her a hug as I stroked her hair to calm her down. The feeling of not knowing who to trust and the paranoia that came with it was something I understood all to well.

Even unrelated to my sickness I had I knew that feeling, my former father who was drunk and abusive, the bullies at school. It might not be the same experience as she had but the feeling was similar and it made me relate to her.

"You are not alone Urpie. I am here with you and you can trust me can't you?" I felt as she relaxed in my arms and leaned onto me. I held her for awhile before she said.

"Thank you Bellz."

We sat there for awhile before I chose to drift of to sleep and to get rested for the what was planed the next day. The day we start our studies of magic.

-----

Urpie had recovered as she also had decided to sleep after exhausting herself from crying. She was now in the back of my mind observing everything that was happening through my eyes and ears.

Over the last year the only time I got taught from mother was the time she explained to me about instinctive spells. But today was the day it will begin, the road to magic supremacy. Or so I would like to think at least.

Looking at the Magic disc it seemed as I would be quite proficient in magic, but the reaction of my parents, Tess and Rachel when it came to the information about my magic was to go by I wouldn't be anything special. the only thing that had gotten any reaction from them was the titles.

Suddenly the door to the library opened and in came Magdala dressed in a long loose fitted dress and a black leather jacket. She wore a pair of glasses I had never seen her use before and her long black hair was put in a ponytail. Her two black seemed to swallow the light from the candles and lanterns in the library as she walked to the blackboard she had placed at on end of the room with three desks faced towards it. In one of the desks my sister sat with an uninterested look as she had already been studying for the last year and at another desk I sat filled with anticipation but in the last desk Maxime sat.

He had been begging his mother to be allowed to study magic even if he hadn't shown any signs of being proficient in it yet. And if I understood it correctly, it was allowed for beastkin to learn magic before they have gotten their first disc. Why it wasn't allowed for Dromos I didn't know. But I think I knew why...I do think elf's wasn't allowed to learn about magic until they reach the age of twenty. That was the age when they enter puberty and they don't get their disc until the age of thirty.

"Welcome to the first of many grueling lessons of magic theory. We will be having these two hours every day before lunch and then one hour after lunch you will do some practical magic before you return to doing physical training with Ton and Rachel until dinner time." She began as she turned towards the blackboard.

Damn....this is going to be exhausting...

"Now then, what is magic?" Silence hit the room as she asked this question. "Lilly? You have already had this lesson so I expect you to know this." Lilly who had been falling asleep shot up as she heard her name and answered.

"Magic is magic! It is everything!" Mother shock her head and looked over at Maxime and I before she said.

"Lilly here has been slacking off when it comes to her magic studies. So she will have to start from the beginning." I looked over to my sister who awkwardly scratch the back of her head while she said. "Wops!" As if it was no big deal.

I knew that she was somewhat of a tomboy and was more focused on her physical training then magic but I didn't know it was this bad.

"Oh well, I will explain it all." Mother said as she began drawing something on the blackboard as she explained. "Magic is in everything, yes this is correct. But why is it in everything? And what is it?" She drew a four circles with a big circle connecting them all. In each circle was a different symbol. One had a flame, one had a rock, one had a droplet of water and one a wind.

"Every living being and every small piece of thing that exist has magic within them and this is what this world that the gods have built is made out of. Essence which every living being has within them that that comes from something we call a magic core that creates this essence that we use to convert into something we call mana." She started drawing a larger circle around the first one with four knew symbols.

"With mana we are able to affect the world around us. To create mana you need to produce specific essence depending on what it is you want to accomplish." One of the symbols was a lightning bolt, one was a piece of metal ingot surrounded by what seemed to be magma, one was a flower and one was a block of ice.

"Everyone has the primary essence of one of the four basic elements, fire, earth, water or wind/air. You use that essence like this.!" She held out her hand and said "Oh flame of light my way to illuminated my path. Small flame!" Her hand caught fire as a flame covered it. "I used the essence to convert it into mana to cast my spell. But if I would do this."

She shook her hand to put out the flame then she chanted something else. "Oh wind blow this breeze to help me guide this object of mine. Wind carry!" A small wind gathered in the room and the piece of chalk she had been using to draw and write on the board started to float as the wind gathered around it.

"There I used my magic essence of wind to convert it to mana. And then there is this." She pointed the chalk towards the lightning bolt. Then canceled the spell. She caught the chalk and put it on the table in front of her before she started chanting a new spell but this time while doing some specific hand movement. "Oh thunder bid my will. Make my enemies feel my wrath. Oh thunder come and bid my will. Lightning snake!"
