My eyes held hers, a tear sliding out the corner of my eye.
She was right. I had kept my heart locked up longer than I could remember. It was the easiest way to cope with my endless life. How was I to live forever if I could fall in love at every turn? With every stunning woman? With every genuine form of affection? With any woman who tickled my fancy?
I had long given up on finding love, taking marriage as a mere duty to myself and my bloodline, a means to procreation. I had resolved myself to treat my brides with equal affection but love was never a part of the equation.
