Chapter 22 - Chapter 022

The way he bluntly asked the questions made me know that he was out to make me uncomfortable. He really had it out against me, didn't he?

I wished Luca would appear to save me from such interrogations as he had done the previous day but he wasn't anywhere in sight.

"I'm waiting, Marta," Alonso drawled.

I fiddled with my cutlery for a moment before setting it down. "My husband had something urgent to attend to last night so he wasn't around. Besides, sir, if anything did happen between us, I think that would be our business and not yours." I offered him a smile that was obviously fake.

Alonso turned red in the face, unable to find what to say again for the next few minutes. I was so relieved to have escaped his question.

"As his wife, you should know where he went to, shouldn't you?" Rosa butted in. "Besides, a true wife of the family would know that she should respect her father-in-law and not speak to him harshly."

The look in Alonso's eyes confirmed to me that he wanted her for his daughter-in-law as well.

'I don't give a damn,' I thought to myself, offering Rosa an obviously fake smile. "I would tell you, but if he wanted you to know, he'd have told you."

She turned red instantly as well, her palms curling into fists.

They switched to Spanish for the rest of the breakfast, talking to themselves, and I couldn't be me happier.

I dug into my meal, my smile not leaving my face. Breakfast was going well, after all. A compensation to my dinner that I didn't finish the previous day.

I could feel them shooting daggers at my head, but I couldn't care less.

'Fire away,' I snickered in my head.

Back in the room, I stared at the door to Luca's office. I still needed a plan to get in without getting spotted by the camera.

I also had to find a way to inform Trevor about it. With the enmity of almost half of Luca's family towards me, I couldn't even afford to look at Trevor for too long, talk less of talking to him. They had their eyes on me like hawks, waiting for me to slip up.

I collapsed into the bed again. What to do.

Suddenly, I caught sight of a speck of dust on the headboard. Right. That would work.

I grabbed a napkin lying around on the dresser and began to work my way around the room, wiping the desks, the bed, and every single piece of furniture that there was in the room.

There wasn't much to clean, but the tiny specks of dust on the napkin was enough for me.

Slowly, I progressed towards the door that led to his office. I wiped a lamp in the corner, cleaning it carefully, and then finally pushed the door open.

My breath hitched for a moment. If I had thought his room was dark, it was because I hadn't seen his office. It smelled fresh and new, and all the chemical smell of finely polished furniture polish almost gave the vibe that no one had ever been here since it was furnished.

I continued to pretend like I was cleaning the walls, staring around in awe. This place was huge.

The large desk sitting in the centre of the office reflected the light from the ceiling. A chandelier hung over the desk, sparkling as it shone light directly towards the desk.

I caught sight of another camera in the centre of the office and groaned. Did he really have to have cameras everywhere? Who even watched the cameras?

I continued to work my way around the office, keeping my eyes out for clues while maintaining an innocent disposition.

When I got to his desk, I cautiously wiped it, taking my time to stare intently at all the documents littered across it. One caught my eyes. It was a document that oversaw the borders of New York. For some reason, it intrigued me. Why?

Suddenly, a light bulb came on in my head. Aha! The senior council member. That was the border he manned, wasn't it?

What greater evidence was there than this? I pretended to mistakenly swipe it open as I wiped the desk harder. There was no signature from the man. Only some droplets of blood in the place where hus signature should have been.

I knocked down the document from the desk while wiping the desk and kicked it with my feet further down the desk so he would not be able to access it.

I'd leave it until when I could take it without him noticing. I had to inform Trevor and have Trevor work on deleting the CCTV footage when I took the document. For now, a smile settled on my cheeks.

I headed towards the glass library, humming a faint song as I swiped the napkin. He had a lot of books. My eyes widened as I caught sight of an image.

It looked out of place in Luca's dark world. I pulled it out to admire it. It had a glass frame.

It was the picture of a very beautiful lady who had a warm smile. Her golden blonde hair shimmered in the sunlight, and her immaculate white blouse, worn over a long flowing navy blue skirt and a denim jacket. She looked so pretty and unfamiliar. I hadn't seen her around.

Beneath the picture, an inscription was written 'Susan'. The picture dated back to over three years ago.

Another picture peeked from behind it and I gasped. Luca was in this one and boy did he look different. His eyes were much lighter and he had a smile on his face. His arms were wrapped around her in an embrace as well.

Who was she? What was her picture doing in Luca's office? How was she related to Luca?

"What the hell are you doing in my office?" Luca's angry voice boomed, making me drop the picture in fright.

I gasped as the glass shattered in a million pieces. I was dead!
