Chapter 3
"What?!" Grey shouted in surprise. The First Mage had just informed him that he might have an affinity.
"What do you mean, 'what if I had an affinity'?" Grey asked, feeling a surge of excitement at the prospect of becoming a mage. Then he remembered—mages were supposed to inherit their abilities, and to his knowledge, neither of his parents were mages.
"But neither of my parents are mages."
"It doesn't have to be that way," the mage replied.
"What do you mean?" Grey inquired.
The mage sighed, then stood up from his chair, his gaze locking onto Grey. Under the intense stare, Grey felt himself trembling.
"Your parents don't have to be mages for you to become one. And you're also right—mage abilities are usually hereditary. That was the restriction placed on humans."
"Then how am I a mage?" Grey asked in frustration.
"Did I say you were a mage?" the mage countered. "I only said, what if you had an affinity?"
Grey felt like his head was about to explode. A vein on the side of his forehead bulged as he gritted his teeth in irritation.
"Well, you actually could be a mage since your grandfather was one," the mage said.
"What?!" Grey exclaimed in shock.
"Didn't you know?" The mage raised a brow. "Even your father was a mage, but he never managed to unlock his affinity before he died. And I couldn't save him either—it was too late. That's why I couldn't sit back and watch you die."
Grey's mind spun from the revelations.
'Grandfather was a mage? Even my father? If he had unlocked his dormant abilities, would he have survived?' Grey thought, feeling dejected.
"I can see everyone's affinities and powers, but for some reason, I can't see yours," the mage admitted.
"Doesn't that mean I don't have an affinity?" Grey asked, raising a brow.
"No! I can feel it—you definitely have an affinity. But what it is, I don't know. However, there's a way to find out," the mage said.
"Well then, let's get to work!" Grey grinned.
"How quickly you've changed," the mage chuckled. "Just moments ago, you were submissive and respectful. Now you're bossing me around."
With a snap of his fingers, a table appeared before them, followed by a huge glowing orb so reflective that Grey could see his own face in it.
"Alright, place your hands on this orb," the mage instructed.
Grey didn't hesitate. Excited, he placed his hands on the orb. Immediately, he felt something strange—like a piece of himself was being drawn out, flowing through his hands and into the orb.
He was about to pull away when the mage spoke.
"Keep your hands still! It will only last a second."
Grey obeyed, waiting until the mage told him to move his hands away. As soon as he did, the mage stepped forward to examine the orb.
After a few seconds of tinkering and mumbling, the old mage suddenly froze, staring at the orb with wide eyes, his expression one of pure shock.
Seeing the mage's reaction, Grey grew uneasy.
"Is everything alright? Are the results bad?"
The mage snapped out of his daze and looked at Grey. "Place your hands on the orb again."
Though worried, Grey complied. He felt the same sensation as before, but this time, he waited patiently.
A few seconds later, he removed his hands, and the mage examined the orb once more.
For the second time, his eyes widened in disbelief.
"Yup, it's definitely not broken. But how is this possible?" the mage muttered in astonishment.
"What's wrong? Please tell me—you're scaring me," Grey said, his concern growing.
The mage quickly regained his composure. With a wave of his hand, the orb and table disappeared, and a second chair materialized behind Grey.
"Sit," the mage instructed, and Grey did.
"I don't know how this is possible," the mage admitted. "I'm completely at a loss for words."
"What's going on? Do I not have an affinity?" Grey asked, already feeling discouraged.
"Who said you don't have an affinity? Kid, not only do you have one—you could become the strongest mage in existence."
"So I do have an affinity?" Grey jumped up in excitement. He didn't care about titles or power. As long as he had a useful affinity to help his widowed mother, that was all that mattered.
"Will you sit down and let me finish?" the mage scolded, and Grey quickly settled back into his seat.
"As I was saying, what do you know about mages?" the mage asked.
"Not much. Just that they have some pretty cool powers and are treated like gods on Earth," Grey answered with a shrug.
"And you wanted to be a mage? What kind of mage doesn't know anything about mages?" The mage shook his head before continuing. "Anyway, I won't tell you everything now—just enough to help you understand what I'm about to say."
Grey leaned forward, hanging onto the mage's every word.
The mage lowered his voice to a whisper. "Grey, your affinity isn't just rare—it's something I've never seen before. The world isn't ready for what you might become."
