Chapter 7 - The Library Encounter

Chapter 7

Grey freshened up, had his breakfast, and hurried out of the house, heading straight for the library. He hoped to find a scroll that would help him unlock one of his affinities.

With his hands tucked into his pockets and his gaze lowered, he walked through the streets, deep in thought.

I wonder which affinity I'll unlock first. Lightning would be amazing—it's rare, increases speed, and just looks cool. But then again, fire could be useful too, just like the first mage.

A small smirk appeared on his lips. Either way, I'd love to see the faces of those who looked down on me when they find out.

He hadn't told his mother about his plans yet, wanting it to be a surprise.

After a few minutes, Grey arrived at the library. Taking a deep breath, he pushed open the door and walked in with more confidence than ever before.

He scanned the shelves, carefully browsing through the books. His eyes landed on two that caught his interest. Wasting no time, he pulled them out and found a seat.

I don't have money to rent these, so I'll have to memorize as much as I can while I'm here, he thought as he opened the first book.

Introduction to the Use of Fire Magic

Grey carefully skimmed through each page, committing everything to memory. The book covered the basics of fire magic, the conditions required to unlock it, and its applications.

He read with unwavering focus, absorbing the knowledge until it became second nature. Time for the spell book, he thought, picking up the second book.

At first, Grey had considered lightning magic, but after reading about the extreme and dangerous conditions required to unlock it, he decided against it for now. Fire magic, while still challenging, seemed more achievable—and he was ready to take risks.

The spell book detailed basic fire spells, their activation words, and the hand formations needed to cast them. Unbeknownst to him, Grey possessed a rare talent—he could effortlessly remember everything he read or heard. It was a gift he had unknowingly revealed when he cultivated his mana core on his own.

After hours of relentless studying, Grey had memorized all the basic fire spells. Excitement bubbled within him at the thought of testing them out. But it was late, and he would have to wait until the next day.

Exiting the library, Grey felt unusually happy—unaware that his joy was about to be interrupted.

"Hey, weakling!" a familiar voice called.

Grey's eye twitched as he turned around, already knowing who it was.

"Clark," he muttered in irritation.

Clark smirked as he approached. "What are you doing at the library?"

Grey raised an eyebrow. "Isn't the library for everyone?"

"It is," Clark sneered. "But it's meant for mages, not weaklings like you."

Grey sighed, muttering under his breath, "If only you knew."

Clark's expression darkened. "What was that? Are you cursing me?"

A small crowd had gathered, but when they saw who was involved, they quickly lost interest. No one cared to interfere. In this world, strength dictated justice. If someone couldn't stand up for themselves, no one would do it for them.

"Why would I curse you?" Grey chuckled. "You're already cursed."

Clark's face twisted in rage, a vein bulging on his forehead. This brat… he thought. I'll make him regret that.

He lifted his dominant hand, palm facing downward, and flicked his wrist as he shouted, "Aerius!"

A powerful burst of swirling wind erupted from his palm with a loud whooshing sound, slamming into Grey and knocking him several feet back.

Grey hit the ground hard, wincing in pain. He barely had time to recover before he heard Clark's approaching footsteps.

Clark smirked, looking down at him. "See the difference between us? You'll never bridge the gap. Next time, know your place."

He turned to leave, but Grey's voice stopped him.

"Hey, Clark."

Clark paused, then turned slowly.

Grey smiled and raised his hands, mimicking Clark's earlier stance—dominant hand extended downward. Clark's heart pounded in his chest. Is he going to use Aerius? But that spell took me months to learn! No… he doesn't even have a mana core.

Grey held his hands close together before bowing slightly. "Thank you for teaching me this valuable lesson. I promise I won't forget it."

Clark's face twisted in confusion before he scoffed. "As expected from a weakling."

With that, he walked away, leaving Grey alone.

Silence settled over the street. Grey sat up, rubbing his aching chest. Just as he exhaled, he felt it—a faint warmth deep within him. It pulsed, steady and insistent, like a distant drumbeat.

His eyes widened. Focusing inward, he sensed it clearly for the first time: mana, swirling and gathering in his chest, like a flickering ember waiting to ignite.

A slow smile spread across his face.

"Tomorrow, everything changes."
