Chapter 13
After escaping Clark's clutches, Grey sprinted back home, using wind magic to enhance his speed and agility while avoiding unwanted attention. He occasionally utilized the wind spell he had learned from Clark to propel himself forward. Unlike what most would assume about frequent spell usage draining a mage's core, Grey's core had already expanded beyond the average mage's, allowing him to use spells more repeatedly than before.
Finally, after a few minutes of running, he arrived at his shabby home, which looked as if it were on the verge of collapse. As he stepped inside, a sweet aroma filled his senses, signaling that his mother was home and preparing dinner.
"Mom! I'm back," Grey called out.
Clara emerged from the kitchen, wearing a worn-out apron. "Grey! Where were you?"
"I went to train," he replied.
"Train? Train for what?" Clara asked as she approached him.
"Trying to see if I can unlock my magic powers," Grey answered.
Clara sighed, gently patting his shoulder. "Honey, you know you don't have an affinity. Why put yourself through this?"
"I know, Mom, but I just feel like if I practice more, I might be able to unlock something." Grey's face contorted into a somber expression.
He hadn't told his mother that he had already unlocked his magic, nor that he had met the first mage, who revealed he possessed five affinities, making him stronger than an average mage.
Clara sighed again, realizing there was no convincing Grey otherwise. She turned to head back into the kitchen when he stopped her.
"Mom, I got something for you," he said, pulling a small pouch from his worn-out pants.
Clara looked at him curiously. As Grey jiggled the pouch, her eyes lit up. "Is that what I think it is?" she asked, stepping closer.
Grey handed it to her, and she quickly opened it, her eyes widening. "Silver coins? Where did you get these?"
"I earned them, Mom," Grey replied with a grin.
"Twelve silver coins? How did you earn that much?"
Taking a deep breath, Grey repeated the same fabricated story he had told the shop vendor. "I came across a dead beast while training, skinned it, and sold it," he explained.
Clara examined his expression, then sighed in relief. She had feared he was doing something dangerous, but his story reassured her. Smiling, she returned to the kitchen to continue preparing dinner.
'Phew! Thank goodness she bought that,' Grey thought. 'Seeing her smile like that... It's been too long since I last saw a genuine smile on her face. If I want to keep seeing that smile, I have to step up and help support the house like Dad did.'
Determined, he pondered his next move.
' I can't let her take all the household responsibilities on her shoulder, I need to help her and for that, I need a job or something so I can earn money for her. But where the hell do I start from?' He thought confused as he paced around the small living room.
With a sigh, Grey walked to his room, deciding that those concerns could wait. For now, he needed to practice the fire magic spells he had learned from the library.
Pushing the loose knob, he stepped inside—only to be blinded by an intense white light. He instinctively shielded his eyes, waiting for the sensation to pass. When he opened them, he was still in his room, unharmed.
"For a second there, I thought the first mage was about to abduct me like he did in the forest," Grey muttered, chuckling. But then, another burst of white light appeared—smaller but still blinding enough that he had to cover his eyes.
"What the hell is going on? Am I under attack?" Grey's instincts kicked in, swirling mana through his body while activating fire magic around his hands, ready for battle.
As the light receded, a man emerged in the middle of his room. He wore a flowing white robe, his long white beard and hair swaying as if caught in an invisible wind.
Recognizing him, Grey sighed and dispelled his magic. "Oh, it's you."
"What?" the man said, eyes narrowing. "Last time, you were practically groveling at my feet, and now you act so nonchalant?"
Grey smirked, then bowed dramatically. "Oh, please forgive me, great mage!"
"You can rise," the mage said, rolling his eyes.
This was the first mage, the one who had revealed Grey's magical affinities.
"What brings you here?" Grey asked, sitting on his bed. With a snap of his fingers, the mage summoned a throne-like chair and sat across from him.
"I won't waste time—I don't have much of it," the mage said seriously. "Grey, I've been watching you these past two days since you unlocked your potential."
Grey stiffened, instinctively crossing his arms over his body. "You haven't been watching me bathe, have you?"
The mage groaned. "You fool! I do not spy on you during such moments!"
Relaxing, Grey chuckled, while the mage shook his head in exasperation. "How did a simple human like you gain such astonishing powers?" he muttered. "Anyway, we have been watching you, and I must admit, I'm impressed—especially when you fought that level 3 beast with only wind magic."
Grey perked up at the praise, but the mage's next words made him serious.
"You have great potential, but it's not enough. You need to grow stronger—quickly. They are beginning to make their move."
"Who?" Grey asked, his brow furrowing.
The mage's expression darkened. "The Otherworlders."
