Chapter 42
"Huh? Right, I forgot about Randin's parting gift," Grey said as he quickly walked over to where he had thrown his bag. He picked it up and slowly opened it.
"I wonder what's in this chest," Grey muttered, excitement lighting up his eyes as he opened it.
"This… this… this is so generous and thoughtful!" he exclaimed, a tear rolling down his cheek.
Emptying the contents of the chest, Grey picked them up one by one, examining each with stars in his eyes.
First, he picked up a new sword crafted by Randin to replace the one that had broken during the fight with the Goblin Lord's elite squad.
The sword was double-edged, with a blue-silver hilt that shimmered slightly under the light. The blade itself was etched with an elegant snake pattern that seemed to slither along its surface.
Next was a pair of boots. Running his hands over them, Grey could feel how soft and smooth the material was. He tried them on, and a pleased smile crept across his face as his feet slid snugly into them.
The boots rose just above his ankles and had a curious rabbit-ear design at the top edges. Their sleek black color gave them a sharp, stylish look.
Lastly, he pulled out a small red pendant, no larger than a gem.
Seeing it, Grey immediately recognized what it was—he had seen a similar one around Randin's neck and knew how useful it could be.
"This… this is a storage pendant. And it's so beautiful—it matches my red hair perfectly," Grey smiled as he put it on, his eyes gleaming.
He tapped on the pendant and held his sword near it. Instantly, like a tiny wormhole opening, the pendant sucked the sword in, making it disappear.
"Cool!" Grey grinned and did the same with his boots, watching them vanish into the pendant's storage.
"Now… how do I equip my sword when I need it?" he asked aloud. Instantly, the sword appeared in his hand.
"Huh? It works with just a thought?" he said in surprise.
He thought about his boots—and just like that, they appeared on his feet, fitting snugly.
"Now that's what I'm talking about," Grey smiled, putting the equipment back into the pendant's storage.
After finishing his testing, he lay down on his bed, letting himself relax, making a mental note to thank Randin when he saw him again.
When he woke up, he went downstairs to find his mum setting the table. He helped her, and soon, they both sat down to enjoy dinner, chatting happily.
Grey asked his mum about her work, smiling as she talked about her factory. She also asked Grey about how he felt after unlocking his affinities.
They continued their small talk until dinner was done. Grey did the dishes, but as he was about to head to his room, his mum called him back.
"What is it, Mum?" he asked.
"I want you to promise me something," Clara said, motioning for Grey to sit down.
"What is it, Mum?" he asked again, more softly this time.
"I want you to promise me that you won't use your power for evil—that you'll only use it for good. Whether I'm around or not, whether I'm with you or not, I want you to continue using your abilities to help people—even those who may have wronged you. If you can do that, I'll be happy," Clara said sincerely.
"Mum, you've taught me well. Don't worry—I won't turn evil or misuse my powers. I'll use them to do good," Grey assured her with a smile.
"Good! That's my boy," Clara said as she ruffled his red hair fondly.
"Darn! That's going to take some getting used to," Clara chuckled, playfully holding a strand of his vibrant red hair.
"Yeah, same here," Grey laughed, and they played around a bit before finally heading to their rooms for some well-deserved rest.
In his room, rather than sleeping, Grey opened another chest from his bag. He carefully took out four glowing crystals and smiled as he admired them.
This was the chest he had recovered from the Goblin Lord's cave—half-filled with gold coins and half with crystals. Out of the ten crystals inside, he chose four that radiated with immense power.
"I can feel the energy in these four crystals… two of them have fire magic, and the other two are infused with earth magic. With these, I can finally boost my affinities," he grinned and quickly got to work.
Absorbing the power from crystals required time and focus—it couldn't be rushed. Once a user's concentration was broken, the connection to the energy flow would be severed, rendering the crystal completely useless.
Only high-level mages—those at six stars or higher—knew how to perform this technique. But Grey, being special, could do it despite not being at that level yet.
After several minutes of quiet focus, Grey finally opened his eyes with a wide smile. He could feel the energy surging within him. Without hesitation, he used his appraisal skill.

"Woah! I gained 10 points in each element… that means these power crystals were level 2 tier!" Grey exclaimed with a huge grin.
"Ha! This week is going to be amazing!" he said confidently as he tidied up his room and got ready to sleep.
Little did he know… he couldn't have been more wrong.
This week would turn out to be the most horrible, life-changing week of his entire life.
