I scanned the trees, my eyes searching for any sign of movement, but there was nothing. No rustling of leaves, no snapping of twigs. Just an unsettling silence.
"Who's there?" I screamed again and my voice echoed as dread filled me up just like that.
My heart began to beat a little faster.
Not again. Please, not again.
"Breathe, it's just in your head, Kai…breathe" I took in a lungful of air and I tried to shake off the feeling, telling myself I was just being paranoid, but the sensation lingered.
Once bitten and all, I guess.
So, I took a step back, my hand instinctively reaching for the door handle of the van.
Last time didn't end so well but this time around, I wasn't sticking around for the awful part of this story.
A figure stepped out of the shadows and I tried to run but then he spoke.
"It's me. I didn't mean to scare you. Hi, Kai"
I recognized the voice.
