Liam's heart was as sweet as if it had been dipped in sugar.
He waved to Maureen again, he didn't forget to pick up the cake from the floor.
Disgusted by the thought, he held it roughly and glanced back at her as he retreated two steps.
However, he stepped back straight into the stairwell across the hall, his foot slipped due to the missing step and his tall frame wavered, almost taking a tumble.
Maureen was startled but Liam managed to regain his balance and straighten up surprisingly fast.

He gave Maureen a red-faced look, then turned around and scurried down the stairs.
Maureen stood by the door for a moment, calming her rapidly beating heart, rubbing her cold but grinning face that was somewhat stiff from the cold.
Only then did she close the door and return to her room.
