Her mind flashed back to the day a week ago that Nerida had called for a duel amongst the men and she had put Vali against Narfi.
"I—I didn't take anything from you, Vali!" Maeve gasped, her voice cracking. Though she knew that he was referring to the death of Narfi, she didn't blame herself. "You weren't supposed to go too far!"
"Shut up! I'll cut your head off, Maeve! I'll do it! You women drugged me!"
Vali's fingers twisted through her hair, yanking her head back as he glared at her with wild, vengeful eyes. Then he dragged her forward without hesitation, using her as a human shield to get himself out of the dungeon, completely forgetting about Sirius.
Sirius hadn't expected Vali to escape so easily. That meant he could have gotten out at any time. He cursed under his breath. If Vali had been holding back, then whatever he was planning now was even worse—it could get them all killed.
