Chapter 5 - Chapter 004: Interrogation

"How could Chuanzi, being so capable, just be taken away like that?" Lu Dapao couldn't accept it.

Not only did Lu Dapao find it strange, but Song Xiaojia also felt it peculiar. Zhang Wenhui and Song Xiaojia, following behind Lin Chuan, Song Xiaojia quietly asked, "Captain Zhang, how... how can this guy walk away so calmly?"

"His calmness comes from having no regrets!" Zhang Wenhui smiled, the young man before his eyes reminded him so much of his younger self. He only hoped that he wouldn't follow in his own footsteps.

"What?!" Song Xiaojia stood there stunned until Lin Chuan and Zhang Wenhui had left the hospital. It was then she hurriedly followed after them.

In fact, Lin Chuan did not want to go with them; he was concerned about worrying his mother. Before his mother woke up, he wanted to resolve those issues first. If they were not resolved, he would never be at peace.

......

In Jiangbei City, at the Huai Mountain South Road police station.

Lin Chuan was temporarily locked in the interrogation room, probably the only person ever to be detained there without handcuffs. Due to the complexity of the case, this seemingly simple matter had been dragging on. Long Wu might have just been a thug, but the fact he could curry such favor in Huai Mountain indicated he had support from higher-ups.

Deputy Director's Office.

"Old Zhang, crimes of intentional injury, robbery... these charges aren't light!" Li Jiangping looked up at Zhang Wenhui, holding a cigarette in his hand, and continued, "You wouldn't be thinking of covering for him, would you? Old Zhang, that'd be irresponsible to our precinct, to the Party, to the country, to the people."

"Deputy Director Li, don't speak so gravely," Zhang Wenhui sat opposite Li Jiangping, tapping the desk lightly with two fingers before saying, "After all, Long Wu was the one who inflicted injury first. So, if we're really catching someone, I'm afraid Long Wu's charge for intentional injury..."

"That's a separate issue," Li Jiangping immediately reminded, "Besides, can we count confessions under harsh interrogation? Maybe Long Wu just couldn't handle the young guy's punches and kicks, so he confessed. Without evidence, we can't make hasty conclusions—that's a basic principle for us police."

Zhang Wenhui gave Li Jiangping a sarcastic smile, his eyes filled with mockery borne from his deep understanding of the police station's internal affairs. Yet, this smile made Li Jiangping feel extremely uncomfortable.

Clap clap clap...

Li Jiangping slammed his hand down on the desk before saying, "What do you mean by that, Zhang Wenhui? Is this distrust towards your superior, or towards the organization?!"

At that moment, Zhang Wenhui stood up, flicked the ash from his cigarette into the ashtray, turned around, and left without expression. Zhang Wenhui's attitude only intensified Li Jiangping's anger. Li Jiangping shouted at Zhang Wenhui's retreating back, "What kind of attitude is that, Zhang Wenhui? Is this the attitude a grassroots police officer should have?"

Then, Zhang Wenhui paused briefly, laughed, and said, "Deputy Director Li, does the fifty thousand in your drawer burn your hand?"

Li Jiangping froze, his eyes widened, "You actually went through my desk?"

"No!" Zhang Wenhui waved his hand, "I don't have the habit of rummaging through other people's desks, just... please remember to close the drawer next time we talk."

Li Jiangping looked down to see stacks of bright red bills that seemed to be laughing at him. It was a mocking laugh, filled with the disgust of a leader towards his disappointment, hatred, and abomination towards him.

By the time he looked up, Zhang Wenhui had already stepped out.

Li Jiangping hurriedly made a phone call, "Old Wu, take it easy recently. Damn, someone's caught on!"

......

Zhang Wenhui had fought for what he could, as to how things would develop was beyond his control. Although he had another identity, that identity was not something that could be easily used; one must not startle the snake by hitting the grass until absolutely necessary. Yet, Zhang Wenhui suddenly realized that Lin Chuan now greatly resembled his younger self. And so, he wanted to make an effort.

The outside sunset was so gentle, but in Zhang Wenhui's eyes, it was piercingly bright. Looking at that gentle sunlight, Zhang Wenhui suddenly showed a smile, a soldier's smile.

Passing police officers all went out of their way to avoid him.

"Captain Zhang, why are you here?" Song Xiaojia asked in confusion, although Zhang Wenhui was her senior, just like all the other officers in the station, she avoided him, too. What made Song Xiaojia most helpless was that over the past year with Zhang Wenhui, her daily work involved nothing but patrolling or helping neighbors find their lost cats and dogs. She never got to work on any major cases.

"Oh, just looking!" Zhang Wenhui said with a smile.

"I heard they're about to conduct an interrogation, are you... are you going?" Song Xiaojia hastily asked.

"I'm not going," Zhang Wenhui shook his head, "Going or not, it doesn't make a big difference!"

"Why do you say that?" Song Xiaojia asked in confusion, the breeze blowing her flowing bangs, highlighting her exquisitely beautiful face that caught the attention of many passersby.

"Because the decision from above has already been made, hasn't it?" Zhang Wenhui smiled, "To prosecute him for intentional injury and robbery, I believe the indictment will soon be sent to the Procuratorate."

"Isn't that supposed to happen?" Song Xiaojia frowned and said, "As a people's police officer, our duty is to protect the lawful property of the people and to stop crime!"

"No." Zhang Wenhui shook his head, "We are protecting the dark forces."

"Ah?" Song Xiaojia, who had been on the job for just over a year, obviously didn't understand what Zhang Wenhui meant by that.

At this moment, a male administrative police officer rushed out in a hurry, running and shouting: "Captain Zhang, it's... it's not looking good."

"What happened?" Zhang Wenhui asked with confusion.

"That... Lin Chuan's file can't be accessed!" The male police officer gasped for air and said, "It seems... it seems to have been encrypted, I've... I've never encountered such a situation. You're a senior, can you help me take a look? The interrogation team is waiting!"

"Let's go!" Zhang Wenhui nodded.

Several people hurriedly made their way to the administrative section. People in the administrative department were busy in a flurry because fetching a single person's information had become so troublesome—it seemed to be an unprecedented situation for them. The computer window was open, but atop the civil affairs window, floated a black subwindow.

"How could this happen?" Zhang Wenhui was taken aback.

"We've already entered the highest level password of the station!" The male administrative police said awkwardly, "The civil affairs database couldn't find his information. Later, we tried to fetch it from the national security database, but to our surprise, this window popped up."

Zhang Wenhui looked down: In view of national security and military strategic considerations, the current data has been classified at the highest level of archives, please enter the highest level identification key.

A line of eye-catching red text left Zhang Wenhui completely stunned.

The current IP address belongs to the national security database, and whoever is listed in this archive is basically...

"Captain Zhang..." At this time, Song Xiaojia quickly interrupted Zhang Wenhui's thoughts, anxiously asking, "What should we... do now?"

"Hehe…" Zhang Wenhui turned towards everyone with a smile that seemed hideous, his yellowish teeth were disgusting. After laughing, he turned and walked away, leaving behind a group of dazed administrative staff.

Inside the interrogation room.

An interrogator, two recorders, and as required, the interrogation room was equipped with surveillance cameras with no blind spots.

All three positioned themselves, and Lin Chuan took a seat in the interrogation chair beside them, with his chest, legs, and hands all secured firmly in place, unable to move. Of course, these things couldn't trap Lin Chuan at all—for him, leaving this place would be as easy as flipping his hand.

"The interrogation begins, do you have any objections to our interrogation?" the interrogator asked.

"No!"

"Name?"

"Lin Chuan."

"Age?"

"Twenty-four."

"Occupation?"

At this point, Lin Chuan was clearly taken aback. He didn't understand what his job was. To be exact, his job was killing. Since joining the army, his instructor had made him forget everything, and all he had learned at school, and all he would learn in the future, was for one thing: killing. Therefore, in the past eight years, countless people had died at the hands of Lin Chuan, including foreign leaders and frontline warriors. He had terrorized terrorists and had participated in the war to eradicate fighters in Chechnya...

"Unemployed!" Just when the interrogator was about to lose his patience, Lin Chuan finally spoke up.

"Why hesitate for so long?" the interrogator asked sternly, "Let me tell you, don't make any futile attempts at cunning defenses, just come clean. What exactly is your job?"

"Unemployed!" Lin Chuan repeated.

"Nonsense!" The interrogator almost leaped out of his chair, glaring furiously at Lin Chuan, and said vehemently, "We found a ticket in your luggage from your return from the northwest border. Since you say you're unemployed, then explain properly, what were you doing there?"

"I..." Lin Chuan hesitated.

"You're hesitating!" the interrogator coldly looked at Lin Chuan and said in a very sharp tone: "This means you are crafting a story in your mind. Right?"

"I am a soldier!" Lin Chuan said.

"Nonsense." The interrogator, angered, threw the book in his hand violently and shouted, "I'm telling you, don't try to evade your charges using a soldier's identity. Even if you are a soldier, you will still receive the punishment you deserve. Lin Chuan, I advise you to honestly confess your case."

"I am innocent!" Lin Chuan sneered.
