Kai barely got any sleep. The lingering presence of the assassin and the mystery surrounding the Monster Core gnawed at his mind. When morning arrived, he forced himself up, determined to find answers.
As he stepped outside, a messenger in academy robes approached him. "Kai, you've been summoned to the Headmaster's Hall immediately."
Kai frowned. "For what?"
The messenger shook his head. "I wasn't told. Just that it's urgent."
Lian, who had just exited her own room, overheard. "That can't be good," she muttered, falling into step beside him.
Kai's thoughts raced as they walked. Had someone reported last night's attack? Did the academy know about the Monster Core? Or worse—was this a trap?
When they reached the massive doors of the Headmaster's Hall, two armored guards blocked the entrance. One of them gave Kai a sharp look before stepping aside. "Go in. Alone."
Kai exchanged a glance with Lian, who nodded. "Be careful."
Taking a deep breath, Kai pushed the doors open and stepped inside.
The hall was grand, lined with ancient tapestries and glowing lanterns. At the far end sat Headmaster Liang, an elderly man with piercing golden eyes.
To Kai's surprise, there was another person present—a tall man in dark robes, his presence radiating quiet authority. His silver badge marked him as an official from the Royal Investigation Bureau.
"Kai," the Headmaster began, his voice calm but firm. "Do you know why you've been called here?"
Kai kept his expression neutral. "I was told it was urgent, but I wasn't given details."
The investigator stepped forward, scrutinizing him. "Last night, an unknown assassin infiltrated academy grounds. From the traces of battle, we know you encountered them."
Kai's pulse quickened. So they knew.
The investigator's eyes sharpened. "Tell us everything you know."
