Kai met the investigator's gaze, keeping his expression calm. "I was attacked near the storage building. The assassin used poisoned arrows and tried to keep their distance. I managed to fight back, but they escaped using a smoke bomb."
The investigator nodded, his fingers tapping against his sleeve. "Did you recognize them? Any insignia, markings, or clues about their identity?"
Kai hesitated. He had seen those piercing silver eyes beneath the mask. But without proof, revealing that detail might do more harm than good.
"They were fast and skilled," he replied instead. "Definitely not an amateur. And they knew the academy's layout well enough to use the rooftops effectively."
Headmaster Liang exchanged a glance with the investigator. "This is troubling," he muttered. "An assassin infiltrating our grounds suggests either inside help… or an opponent far more resourceful than we thought."
Kai frowned. "Do you think it has something to do with the Monster Core found yesterday?"
The investigator's gaze flickered with interest. "You're aware of that incident?"
Kai nodded. "I was there when it was discovered. It seemed out of place."
The man studied him for a moment before saying, "We are considering all possibilities, including the core's origin. However, an assassination attempt on a student is unusual. Either you've made a powerful enemy… or you've stumbled into something much bigger."
Kai's grip tightened. It wasn't just about him anymore.
The Headmaster leaned forward. "For now, you are to remain cautious. We will investigate this matter, but until we determine the culprit, you should avoid unnecessary risks."
Kai knew that was easier said than done. But he nodded anyway. "Understood."
The investigator turned to the Headmaster. "I'll continue my inquiries. If the assassin returns, we'll be ready."
Kai took that as his cue to leave. As he stepped outside, Lian was waiting, her arms crossed. "Well?"
Kai exhaled. "They know about the attack. And they suspect something bigger is happening."
Lian's eyes darkened. "Then we better figure it out before it's too late."
