Ragna had probably fallen asleep. Arin laid awake, his mind racing with various ways to resolve the situation without compromising his pride or sacrificing his ego.
He considered every possible scenario:
the villagers banding together against them,
Hayla conjuring an illusion to trap him,
or worse,
turning Ragna against him.
He meticulously thought through every potential threat and crafted responses and comebacks for each one.
After a while, they heard a soft knock on the door. "Me Lord, may I?"
It was Lohan; they recognized his voice.
Both of them rose from their beds. Arin glanced at Ragna. She gave him a sad smile that pierced his heart with guilt. He nodded at her, sensing her growing belief that history was repeating itself, as it had with her previous teammates.
