Chapter 52: The Lord is Petty

Something so absurd happened that Alice, Jill, and Peyton Terri began questioning their beliefs.

"Dante… no, I mean Father, does God really exist in this world?"

Peyton couldn't help but ask. He had personally experienced the events—not that he felt much during them—but after losing consciousness and waking up, he found himself back to normal, even the bite wounds had healed.

Originally an atheist, Peyton was now shaken.

"Believe it, and He exists. Don't, and He doesn't," Chang Wei replied with a smile.

Too mysterious!

Peyton couldn't understand.

As a Black man, becoming a sergeant was already a remarkable achievement. After all, not everyone could be like Tony Stark's friend Rhodey, a college graduate and Air Force colonel. Peyton's background made even completing high school a miracle, and joining the military was the only way to avoid falling into a life of crime.

In fact, the fact that he was still just a sergeant at his age spoke volumes about his abilities.

Jill, Alice, and Terri were different. They had received elite education, unlike the liberal style of education. Thus, they could understand Chang Wei's words, even if they didn't believe them.

Terri, a journalist, was especially excited, persistently questioning Chang Wei.

Understandable—Western journalists were notorious for their fearless, troublemaking antics, with the most iconic example being Lois Lane, Superman's girlfriend.

"…Father, do you think… will God punish the Umbrella Corporation?" Alice suddenly asked Chang Wei, taking the initiative to speak about Umbrella Corporation.

"You mean to say that all of this was caused by the Umbrella Corporation? Why do you know so much about them?" Jill asked, her tone both excited and angry.

After all, Jill was a native of Raccoon City, having grown up here. Now, many of the people and things she cherished were destroyed, her home laid to waste. Naturally, she hated the corporation responsible for it all.

"…I used to work for Umbrella, but now I've completely turned against them," Alice said after a pause.

"I don't know if God will punish them. Perhaps He doesn't care—after all, most of the dead were either atheists or casual believers," Chang Wei shrugged.

"Dante, that doesn't sound like something a priest would say," Peyton said, speechless.

"You're right, because I'm an intern. A temp. If I say something wrong, it doesn't matter—I'll just quit," Chang Wei said smugly.

"Aren't you afraid of going to hell?" Jill asked. After all, everyone knew that God was petty and vengeful.

"Even God has places beyond His control, like a certain country that must not be named. The gods there are very xenophobic," Chang Wei shook his head.

"Isn't God supposed to be omniscient and omnipotent? Are there other gods?"

"It's like a product claiming to cure all diseases—do you believe that?"

Chang Wei's remarks left everyone speechless. Thankfully, none of them were devout believers. Otherwise, Chang Wei's words would've been enough to have him sentenced to death by burning at the stake.

"Forget it, let's not dwell on this. On my way here, I saw a weapons store. We need to leave as soon as possible. The Umbrella Corporation might make further moves in this area," Alice said.

They won't have time to act… Chang Wei thought, his expression meaningful.

To avenge the innocent citizens of Raccoon City, Chang Wei had already released an invisible killer that infected a large number of zombies. These zombies subsequently mutated into T-virus versions of Hunters. While weaker than the ordinary Blacklight Hunters, they were still powerful enough to dominate Type II Lickers and even contend with Type III Lickers.

Following Chang Wei's orders, over a hundred Hunters charged towards the quarantine zone where Supervisor Cain and his group were located. Unless they miraculously had over a hundred Longbow Apache helicopters, they would be annihilated. In fact, in the movie's plot, the Umbrella Corporation's group only had two or three Black Hawk helicopters.

No one objected to Alice's suggestion. Peyton, knowing he wouldn't die, regained hope. As they set out, the delay caused by deviating from the original plot led to something bizarre.

In the cemetery, corpses long-dead and infected by the T-virus suddenly reanimated.

It was absurd. The T-virus could not only revive cells that had been dead for who knows how long but also provide enough strength for the corpses to break through coffins and layers of soil. Yet somehow, Jill and Alice managed to dispatch them with martial arts techniques?

Ridiculous. To break through coffin lids and several hundred pounds—if not more—of soil, the corpses' physical strength would at least rival that of ordinary Blacklight virus-infected individuals.

Alice might get away with claiming her perfection as a T-virus host, but what about Jill, a regular human? Blackwatch's soldiers could only massacre infected due to their precise marksmanship. In melee combat, their casualty rates would skyrocket.

The group was startled, but they quickly dealt with the slow-moving corpses.
