Chapter 60: Angels Are Not Merciful
The Umbrella Corporation's supervisor, Lewis Witt, saw the protective barrier vanish. Before he could react, Chang Wei raised his hand. The air visibly distorted, eventually forming a nearly transparent bead in Chang Wei's palm.
"This is the radiation from your so-called god-slaying nuclear weapon. Although it's not as lethal as before, concentrated like this, it's enough to make someone wish they were dead," Chang Wei remarked coldly to the supervisor.
Using telekinesis, Chang Wei easily gathered the residual radiation and nuclear fuel left behind by the explosion. What was a divine miracle to others was mere child's play for him.
The supervisor's pupils contracted. Everyone realized what this angel intended to do. The supervisor attempted to end his own life, but his body was no longer under his control, as he was drawn helplessly toward Chang Wei.
Chang Wei simply held the bead, and it autonomously flew into the supervisor's gaping mouth.
"Gulp!"
The sound of swallowing echoed, sending shivers down everyone's spine. This was nuclear radiation, the residue of a nuclear explosion. Even though modern nuclear weapons claimed to be technologically advanced with reduced radiation compared to Nagasaki or Hiroshima, no one would consider such radiation harmless.
Now, all that radiation was concentrated inside the supervisor.
"Aaaaaahhh!"
The supervisor began to scream in agony. His skin visibly decayed. He clawed at his own flesh, tearing off large chunks, only for the nerve endings to die soon after, leaving him devoid of pain sensation. However, this did not alleviate his suffering. Watching his body rot away bit by bit was a torment as psychological as it was physical.
Alice and her companions were less shocked. To them, this was consistent with how angels were portrayed in myth. Angels were never kindhearted beings but divine weapons of God, capable of massacring cities and annihilating armies. As such, they found no fault in Chang Wei's "punishment," even though it reinforced their reverence and awe for him.
The Umbrella soldiers, on the other hand, were utterly terrified. Witnessing the supervisor's gruesome demise, they began to tremble uncontrollably.
Divine Retribution!
This was undoubtedly divine retribution! Except now, instead of swords, floods, or lightning, this angel had adopted humanity's methods, repaying them in kind.
You used nuclear weapons on me, so I'll let you taste nuclear radiation.
Would their fate be the same as the supervisor's?
"Alright, there's no more nuclear radiation outside. You're free to leave," Chang Wei said nonchalantly, ignoring the soldiers and turning to Alice and her group.
"And… you?" Alice asked hesitantly. Her feelings toward Chang Wei had shifted from closeness to reverence.
Yet, she couldn't help but hope. If this angel stood with them against the Umbrella Corporation, the company would have no chance of survival.
Indeed, most of the group believed that Chang Wei's presence signified divine displeasure with the corporation's transgressions, which had compelled an angel to descend. After all, if angels were indifferent to human affairs, God, despite loving humanity, rarely intervened in mortal lives. The absence of miracles for so many years amidst scientific progress was proof enough.
"The matters and fates of this place and its people have nothing to do with me. I'm merely on vacation," Chang Wei replied enigmatically.
His words sounded like a riddle, akin to divine prophecy. Such ambiguity allowed room for interpretation; if correct, the interpreters were praised, and if wrong, the fault lay with their understanding. Too much clarity would only invite trouble.
"…You won't come with us?" Jill asked, unable to suppress her curiosity.
Why was she still fixated on recruiting the angel?
Chang Wei was speechless.
"Your fates are for you to decide," he replied.
"What will our fate be?" Dr. Ashford asked. He had just regained his composure, but his fervent curiosity consumed him. For a moment, even Chang Wei couldn't read his thoughts.
This man was both pure and fanatical.
"The Lord says: It cannot be said," Chang Wei replied with a solemn expression.
Dr. Ashford was visibly frustrated, scratching his head in despair. Yet, he dared not press further.
"Could you at least tell us your name? We would forever…"
The reporter Terri also couldn't suppress her curiosity.
"There's no need. I don't care," Chang Wei said flatly, his indifferent gaze silencing her. Terri had been contemplating asking for a photo or secretly recording a video, only to find that her camera displayed nothing but white static.
This left Terri deeply regretful and dissatisfied.
Chang Wei vanished into thin air. Alice and the others stood in stunned silence. If not for the nuclear explosion's aftermath and the puddle of foul liquid that was once the supervisor, they might have thought it was all a dream.
After a brief discussion, everyone decided to form an anti-Umbrella alliance—even the Umbrella mercenaries joined.
