Chapter 40 - Chapter 40 - Guilt

Yarrow glanced down at the priestess, slightly confused as she'd seemed almost unwilling to stray from Ash's side previously even when called to her own temple. Watching Ash fight had been a strange thing to observe, no one he'd ever met, not even pure spellcasters, used magic quite like she did.

As if she sensed his question, perhaps because she knew quite well how strange Ash's casting was to those that didn't know her, Luna spoke, "Starborn are masters of magic itself and Ash is even more skilled than most of the others I'd had the occasion to meet. Part of her job in our world is dismantling dungeons…She hasn't been able to for centuries now so the burden falls to other magic users. She's been feeling guilty about that for some time which I think contributed to that bit of frustration that led to her being chastised."

He gave a slight nod, slowly forcing himself to relax now that the worst of the danger was past, "What did she mean by saying there's magic she cannot use here?"

Luna's expression faded to one of sorrow as she spoke, "The herd wasn't complete when," she paused, swallowed heavily and forced herself to continue, "Even before the hunt started…they needed special spells to forcefully cleanse the world because there weren't enough of them to accomplish it passively. Because of how widespread the Star Ash are, that magic doesn't exist here…But because it's a key part of what Ash is, I doubt she can be barred from using it."

"Leading to her getting a sharp warning in the middle of a dungeon morph," he scowled, "Why was she even thinking such things in the middle of a morph? There's nothing that can be done until it finishes."

Luna paused in her walking, looking slightly up at him since he was taller when he also halted to glance at her curiously, "Ash can destroy a dungeon mid-morph, mid-formation, even in the middle of a dungeon break. Everything that's supposed to make them immune to damage can't stop her from ripping it to shreds. When she's at full strength, she'll even pull the monsters apart too. She's not entirely bound by the same rules as the rest of us when it comes to dungeons."

Yarrow took a deep breath, his gaze moving back to the door that led to the starseeing pond for a second before he turned back towards the entrance once more, "Why aren't you staying with her?"

"She isn't often scolded," Luna said, her voice gentle, "Not because he coddles her or anything, but because she's normally terribly obedient to all of his teachings. She's still finding her legs here…Finding herself again after so many years of being nothing but the workhorse that cleanses the world's magic. I'm sure that, so long as he is able to make the time to do so, he'll want to talk to her. If I know Asha, that scolding was earned because she was ready to pull the place apart to ensure your survival. Starborn value life very deeply. If they've the power to save a life without losing their own in the trade-off they will use that power. It is how he created her, how he taught her, and now he's having to scold her for it because the rules have changed. I find it best to leave them to themselves when they have such conversations…I've always felt like I was seeing something not meant for my eyes."

Ash watched the two of them leave before pulling open her status screens and perusing her magic in its entirety. Knowing that she could alter the magic she used as a Starborn as well, she now had more building blocks to work with and was curious what could be done with them. The dizziness had subsided swiftly with the help of the starseeing pond's mana restoration and she didn't really want to think too hard on the scolding she'd just received.

"Ashterra," his voice was soft and held a tinge of deep worry and regret to it that she wasn't sure she'd ever heard from him. She glanced up at Sidus, seeing the worry in his voice reflected in his expression, "Please do not leave."

It was a softly spoken request that made her realize that the privacy of her status screens must have extended to even the gods when they took physical form. He didn't know what she was looking at and assumed it was the way to leave considering he'd never really had the occasion to scold her before.

She knew it was a well-earned scolding, though, and held no ill feelings over it. He'd not thought to warn her that some of her magic was off limits and had already cautioned her once against using cleansing magic. She had been contemplating disobedience and so had to be told exactly why she couldn't do so.

"Why do you think I would leave?" She asked softly, closing the screens to properly pay attention to him.

He stepped forward and sat beside her, a small smile touching his lips as she immediately leaned against his side, "I wanted your first days here to be so very different than they have been thus far. I wanted you to find peace…to find joy in the small things in life. Instead, it seems that from the very moment you set foot in this world you have encountered little but trouble."

He wasn't entirely wrong in his assessment. Her introduction to the new world had been a chaotic one, filled with experiences that might have made her bitter once upon a time. She was grateful, though, to have the chance to experience things again and that took the edge of frustration away from what she'd dealt with.

She told him as much as she leaned against his side, letting him know that a peaceful life was likely never going to be an option for her even here. She wasn't the type to stand aside and let others fight while she watched on from the sidelines. He'd raised her to help anyone that she could with her magic and she wasn't about to betray that teaching.
