Chapter 16 - Monsters Part 4

Paige Stevens

They moved down the bustling city. Judging from the direction; they were headed to the waterfront. Every turn led them from the heart of the city, away from his place and closer to hers. Crowds pushed around, never through.

They navigated as a unit, never breaking the little universe they'd created. Anyone watching would have thought it was a part of a dance. They stepped, twisted, leaned, sped and slowed. Shoulders never more than inches apart. It even had a name: 'penetrating the city'.

Jin could be gross when he wanted to be.

There were steps to it, a flow, which at its most extravagant had them arm in arm or back-to-back, spinning like 'cowpoke'. Improvising led by him, her with the greatest challenge matching in half the time it took for him to act. It could go wrong, even be dangerous, Jin occasionally ending with extra wallets. The dance was theirs. No one else could know or understand.

Regret hit her heart like a hammer, leaving a wave of silence between them, echoing into infinity.

They were one street short of the main road, one so busy they'd need to find a bridge. That meant back tracking, the train crossed their mind but not much was said, not with the sun setting.

Ten minutes passed and still they walked in a silence unfamiliar.

Jin stopped her.

"Is it me or did it get really dark and quiet really quickly?"

Paige looked around.

It WAS.

At first it didn't say much, those not able to handle the night rushed home before dark… but no one?

Not a soul, by the ocean?

"Wow, I think you're-"

Paige was cut off when Jin dove on top of her, cutting her air. He flew them out the way of a black Toyota which melted into the exact spot she'd stood. It exploded, bursting in a wave of light.
