Chapter 23 - Chapter 22: The Future’s Edge

The Future's Edge

Thunder rolled across Konoha's darkened sky, rain slicing through the night like blades as Naruto Uzumaki stood outside his apartment, Jiraiya's book clutched in his left hand, the rogue note crumpled in his right: Bring the book, or he's gone. Sasuke's Sharingan burned red under the flickering streetlamp, his jaw tight with resolve, Sakura's fists clenched at her sides, her green eyes sharp with a mix of desperation and fury after Shikamaru's abduction. Temari stood tall, fan slung across her back, rain dripping from her blonde hair, Hinata beside her, Byakugan veins pulsing faintly, her soft features hardened by determination. Echo's trap at the shrine, the "Saruto" pendant's weight, Kurama's growl, "Saruto's your shadow, closer now" swirled in Naruto's mind, a tempest he couldn't escape.

"We move," he said, voice low, cutting through the storm's roar, "Shikamaru's family, we don't wait, not for this." Sasuke nodded, his cloak snapping in the wind, "Kurotsuchi's intel pinned their stronghold north, cliffs past the border, we hit it hard." Sakura's breath hitched, "I'll tear them apart, they don't get him." Temari smirked, hefting her fan, "Good, I'm ready to break something." Hinata's voice steadied, "Together, we'll bring him back."

They bolted through the forest, rain soaking their gear, mud splashing under their boots as branches whipped past, the stronghold looming ahead, a jagged fortress carved into a cliff face, its walls studded with glowing seals, rogue tech pulsing like a heartbeat in the dark. Torches flickered along its ramparts, casting eerie shadows over the stone. Naruto's heart pounded, the pendant's chill seeping through his pocket, Sansuke's clone's words, "He's your blood"... haunting him, Kurama's voice rumbling deep: "It's here, brat, your fight's starting."

They reached the outer wall, Naruto crouched low, signaling the team, his eyes locked on the gate, a slab of iron reinforced with glowing runes, two rogues patrolling above, their cloaks billowing. "Take 'em quiet," he whispered. Sasuke vanished in a blur, his katana a silent arc, the first rogue's throat opened, blood spraying the stone as he crumpled, the second turned, too late... Sasuke's kunai sank into his chest, a choked gasp lost in the rain. Naruto flashed hand signs, "Shadow Clone Jutsu," a dozen clones shimmered into being, each gripping a Rasengan, blue orbs humming with chakra.

"Breach it," he ordered. The clones charged, Rasengans slammed into the gate, a deafening boom shook the earth, iron buckled, shattered inward, rubble exploded in a cloud of dust and sparks, the fortress's interior sprawled before them—tents, crates, rogues scrambling from the chaos. Naruto leapt through, landing amidst the debris, "Let's go!" he roared, his real Rasengan spun, he hurled it at a cluster of foes, the swirling orb tore through, shredding tents, bodies flying, blood mixing with mud.

Sasuke darted right, Chidori crackling in his palm, electric blue light flared as he plunged it into a rogue's chest, the man's scream cut short, ribs caving, sparks danced across the wet ground as Sasuke spun, his blade slashing another's throat, crimson arcing in the rain. Sakura surged left, her fist glowed with chakra, she smashed the earth, a shockwave erupted, stone splintered, three rogues stumbled, bones snapping as they hit the wall, their weapons clattered uselessly, she leapt, crushing a fourth's skull with a brutal heel drop, rain washing the gore away.

Temari unfurled her fan, "Kamaitachi," she swung, a gale roared forth, razor winds sliced through the camp, tents shredded, rogues screamed as blades of air carved flesh, blood sprayed, mixing with the downpour. Kankuro's puppets sprang to life, Crow and Black Ant skittered forward, strings glinted, Crow's blades whirled, slashing throats, Black Ant's arms snapped shut, crushing a rogue's spine, bones crunching loud in the storm. Hinata's Byakugan flared, she darted through, palms striking precise, chakra bursts hit vital points, rogues dropped, gasping, paralyzed, her movements a blur of grace and force.

The fortress trembled, more rogues poured from the shadows, sound jutsu pulsed, waves rattling Naruto's bones, shadow beasts clawed from glowing scrolls, their snarls feral, eyes red. Naruto grinned, fierce, Kurama's chakra flared orange, claws extended, he slashed a beast's snout, black ichor sprayed, his clone tackled another, Rasengan grinding its skull to pulp. Sasuke's fireball roared, incinerating a pack, their howls drowned in flame. Sakura dodged a sound blast, her fist shattered a rogue's jaw, teeth flying. Temari's wind pinned a beast, Kankuro's puppet speared its heart. Hinata's palm struck, bursting another's core.

They carved a path, relentless, the stronghold's heart loomed... a cavernous chamber, its walls etched with dark seals, Shikamaru bound in a ritual circle, glowing runes pulsed on his arms, Kāma-like markings etched into his skin, his eyes fluttered, voice weak, "Naruto, trap, get out." A cloaked figure stepped from the gloom, tall, scarred, his scroll radiated tailed-beast chakra, "Uzumaki," he rasped, voice like gravel, "you brought it, good."

Naruto's fists tightened, "Where's Echo? Who're you?" The man smirked, hood shadowing his face, "Leader's fine, she's done her part," he unrolled the scroll, chakra surged, a guttural roar shook the chamber, tailed-beast jutsu erupted, shadow claws lashed out, massive, jagged, slashing at Naruto. He countered, Kurama's cloak flared brighter, orange chakra clashed with black, his own roar matched it, claws met claws, sparks flew, the impact cracked the floor, dust choked the air, walls shuddered, stones tumbling.

Sasuke darted in, Chidori spear blazing, he thrust at the leader's flank, the man twisted, scroll pulsing, a shadow tendril deflected, sparking off Sasuke's blade. Sakura charged the circle, chakra glowed in her fists, she smashed the seals, stone shattered, runes flickered out, freeing Shikamaru, she hauled him up, his weight limp against her, "Hang on!" Temari's fan swung, a cyclone pinned rogues against the wall, bones snapping. Kankuro's puppets flanked Hinata, guarding as she dragged Shikamaru clear, her palms struck a rogue mid-lunge, dropping him cold.

The leader laughed, "Too late," his scroll flared, he portaled away in a swirl of dark chakra. Shikamaru coughed, "He's gone, but, something's coming," his voice trailed, weak, pained. The air crackled, a rift tore open in the chamber's center, jagged light spilling out, a young man stepped through... tall, lean, blonde hair streaked black, blue eyes burned with Uzumaki fire, Sharingan spun in one socket, Sasuke's steel in his stance, "Grandpa," he said, voice steady, sharp, "Boruto's the end, we stop him now." Saruto Uzumaki, blade drawn, lunged.

Naruto sidestepped, Rasengan humming, "What the hell?" Sasuke's Sharingan flared, katana met Saruto's blade, steel clanged, sparks showered. Temari's fan snapped open, wind surged, buffeting Saruto back. Sakura froze, "Grandpa?" her voice shook. Hinata's Byakugan tracked him, stunned, "He's fast." Saruto halted, blade inches from Naruto's throat, Kāma markings glowed on his arm, eyes torn, "Kill him, or I will, Konoha's ashes demand it."

Naruto gripped the book, chest heaving, "Boruto? My son? What's this mean?" Saruto's voice wavered, "He's got Kāma, Ōtsutsuki took him, he burned it all, I was seven, we hid, trained, came back to stop it." Sasuke stepped closer, "You're ours? Prove it."

Saruto's Sharingan spun, "Uchiha blood, Uzumaki fire, Sarada's my mom, Boruto's my dad, I'm your future, and it's fucked unless you act." Temari gripped Naruto's arm, "He's serious." Hinata's voice trembled, "He's, family?"

Naruto stared, Kurama growling, "He's yours, brat, time's curse, your call." "Choose," Saruto whispered, "or I erase us." A distant rift hummed, something stirring beyond, the team braced, rain pounding outside, the book's weight a lifeline as Sansuke's tests, and now Saruto's truth, crashed down.
