Chapter 20 - When a Wolf Trembles

Usagi's POV:

"Mhmm...!" My knees felt weak as I placed my hands on his chest, trying to steady myself.

"Okami-kun... not here!" My voice came out softer than I intended, my face burning. "I told you... once we're home, I'll let you be!"

He simply smirked, his eyes filled with amusement. Then, without warning, he leaned in and pressed a soft kiss against my cheek.

"Ahh!" My heart skipped a beat—why is he so effortlessly charming?!

"Let's go then," he said casually, taking my hand in his. "I can't wait to have my meal."

A shiver ran down my spine.

Ahh... now am I his meal?

Hehe… it should scare me, yet strangely… it feels so good.

We walked side by side, our fingers intertwined as we headed toward the station. I kept yapping about my whole day—how busy the restaurant was, how Mei and Hina wouldn't stop teasing me, how Okami-kun's mom made me flustered again—just everything!

And he? He just kept listening quietly, nodding every now and then with that unreadable expression of his. But… ahh why does he keep rubbing his thumb on the back of my palm like that?!

Bad boy, bad boy, bad boy!!!

I tried to focus on my rambling, but my voice kept getting softer. My heart was racing now.

Ahhh! What do I do with him?!

I pouted and tugged at his hand.

"Oiii, Okami-kun! Are you even listening to me? Hmph…"

He let out a small chuckle, then turned to me with the most cheeky yet delightfully elegant smile.

"Yes, I am, my lady," he said in a smooth, gentlemanly tone, bowing his head slightly like a butler serving his princess.

Ahh!! Just now—was that a butler? A prince? No, a perfect gentleman?!

How does he switch his personality so effortlessly?! One moment, he's a cold, teasing wolf, and the next, he's acting like someone straight out of a romance novel!

Ahhh, this is so unfair!!!

"Hm? Okami-kun…?"

I squeezed his hand gently, but he didn't react.

His eyes… what is this expression?

For the first time, I saw something I never thought I'd see—Okami looking vulnerable. His usual cold, unreadable gaze was gone. Instead, his eyes were wide, filled with something that sent a chill down my spine.

Scared? No… traumatized? Afraid?

His grip on my hand trembled slightly.

"Okami-kun?" I called again, softer this time.

Still no response. His breathing had changed too—shallow, uneasy.

What's going on?

I followed his gaze, turning my head toward the direction he was staring at.

And then—I saw her.

A girl.

His vulnerable expression, those wavering eyes—when they met mine, my heart ached.

How can someone leave another person with such an expression… just by the sight of them?

What kind of scars has he been carrying all this time?

Without another word, Okami-kun buried his head into my shoulder. His breath was shaky, his whole body tense, as if he was holding himself together by a thread.

"I… I…" His voice wavered, almost breaking. "Let me stay like this for a while…"

I didn't say anything. I just held his head gently, my fingers running through his hair, silently letting him know—I'm here.
