102 Arrive at Yurong City! The Team Battle Competition Begins
Registration was swift, taking less than half an hour. As soon as it was complete, Qin Yun led his team to the training venue to familiarize themselves with one another's battle styles.
The competition battlefield was an equilateral decagon, with each team occupying one side. Pokémon were summoned according to a randomized lottery, with one Pokémon appearing from each team at a time. Once all ten Pokémon were on the field, a three-second countdown initiated the match.
Despite the competitive nature of the event, time was short. Qin Yun focused on individual battle readiness rather than team tactics. His approach puzzled Lin Rouyu.
"Why isn't he planning team strategies?" she murmured, observing Qin Yun's training method.
Instead of rehearsing formations or practicing double battles standard tactics in official Pokémon League tournaments Qin Yun had tailored personalized regimens for each trainer. Lin Rouyu found this baffling. Traditionally, well-organized coordination, like the teamwork seen in Pokémon Adventures' Double Battles, where Red and Blue synchronized their moves against the Elite Four, was crucial for victory. Yet Qin Yun wasn't emphasizing this at all.
As the days passed, Lin Rouyu continued to observe but never saw him conduct team drills. It was either solo training or unconventional team-based games more akin to the playful yet strategic training styles of characters like Gold and Crystal, who developed their Pokémon's abilities in unique, real-world scenarios.
"Has he given up on winning?" she wondered, growing disappointed. The team was registered under Yongji University, and an embarrassing performance would reflect poorly on the school. If they didn't at least place decently, she would face significant backlash.
Her visits gradually decreased, her faith in Qin Yun wavering.
Meanwhile, some of the team members also felt uncertain. Ma Tao, normally enthusiastic, found himself frustrated.
"Zhang Haochen, why are you still training so diligently?" he asked, noticing how dedicated Zhang Haochen remained.
Unlike the others, Zhang Haochen followed Qin Yun's program without hesitation. His obedience was uncharacteristic he was usually a wildcard, the type to challenge authority, much like how Green (Gary Oak) often butted heads with others in his early days.
Zhang Haochen smirked. "Haven't you noticed? Your bond with your Pokémon is improving."
Ma Tao blinked. He hadn't considered it before, but now that he thought about it, his Arcanine was responding more intuitively in battle, and its fire techniques had become noticeably sharper.
"My Machoke has been improving too," another teammate added. "I assumed it was just my imagination…"
"You really think these 'games' were just for fun?" Zhang Haochen scoffed. "The boss planned everything from the start. He's not training us to compete he's training us to win."
Ma Tao fell silent, contemplating this.
Yurong City.
Qin Yun and his team arrived at Yurong Hotel, a luxury establishment that stood tall among the city's landmarks. Due to high demand, the Pokémon Center accommodations were fully booked. Instead, Qin Yun had arranged for a deluxe suite large enough for the entire team something unexpected given his supposed civilian background.
The suite featured six rooms across a duplex floor, with two members per room except for Qin Yun, who, as team captain, had his own. Even their teacher, Lin Rouyu, shared a room with Douzi.
"Wow! This place is incredible!" someone exclaimed.
"This must've cost a fortune, boss!" another added.
Even Lin Rouyu was taken aback by the lavish surroundings. According to her information, Qin Yun wasn't from a wealthy family. Yet, this level of expenditure suggested otherwise.
"Qin Yun, this is too much," she said, slipping into her teacher mode. "You should be saving your prize money for practical purposes."
Qin Yun simply grinned. "As long as we win first place, we won't need to worry."
Lin Rouyu stared at him, dumbfounded. His confidence was absolute, almost to the point of arrogance—reminiscent of how Red fearlessly challenged strong opponents despite the odds.
Her skepticism deepened. She hadn't witnessed any serious strategy discussions. To her, the team didn't stand a chance of making it past the preliminary rounds.
"If they're eliminated in the first match, at least they'll walk away with the 200,000 Pokémon coins participation bonus," she thought.
She sighed, resigning herself to the inevitable. It was common for rookies to overestimate themselves, only to be humbled by reality just like how Silver had once underestimated his opponents before developing into a formidable trainer.
The next morning arrived.
For most of the team, nerves ran high. This was their first large-scale tournament, and the sheer size of the event was overwhelming.
The Yurong City Team Battle Competition was a major event, with 142 registered teams. Sponsored by Yurong Group, it attracted both aspiring trainers and seasoned veterans.
Only Qin Yun and Zhang Haochen remained calm. Zhang Haochen had competed in large-scale events before, though he had never placed highly. He had always believed his losses stemmed from facing older, more experienced trainers. Against his peers, he was confident in his skills.
As the team settled into the waiting area, the event organizers wasted no time. Within minutes, match schedules were distributed. The tournament's efficiency impressed Qin Yun.
"We're Team No. 16 in Group D," he announced, glancing at his device. "Our first opponent is Team No. 21."
The competition was about to begin.
