Chapter 21 - Part 20

I didn't bother to hide the threat in my words.

Amanda's face turned ashen.

She could hardly believe that the man who had once treated her like his most precious possession was now threatening her over a divorce.

"Lucas, when did you become so heartless?"

Amanda's expression was filled with pain.

I stayed silent.

After all, who could keep their original intentions unchanged after five years?

I had tried, and I had succeeded.

But reality proved that clinging to one's original intentions was nothing more than self-deception.

My efforts hadn't changed a thing.

Amanda had still fallen out of love.

"What right do you have to question me?"

I answered her calmly.

Amanda fell silent, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears.

After a long pause, she lifted her head, her voice hoarse.

"Can you give me some time?"

"Lucas, I just can't accept it right now. I want, even if it ends, for it to end properly. I don't want to rush into it. Can you give me that?"

I knew that even if I refused, I would only be faced with endless entanglements from her.

So I simply agreed.

In the following days, Amanda resumed her previous behavior.

Breakfasts.

Flowers.

A stream of gifts.

Every day, my desk became a mountain of flowers and presents.

It was impossible to miss.

This, of course, set the office gossip machine into motion.

Some even thought these were from Sophie.

To that, I could only hurriedly clarify.

"No, no, I think they've been sent to the wrong person."

"They get sent to the wrong person every day?"

My colleagues were clearly skeptical.

I didn't offer any more explanations. Instead, I walked up to the trash can and threw the flowers and gifts into it, right in front of everyone.

"You're throwing them away? What a waste."

Sophie had appeared out of nowhere, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

I shrugged. "If they're not mine, I'll throw them away, naturally."

Sophie wrinkled her nose. "You really don't know how to appreciate things."

With that, she spun around and stormed off.

Of course, this scene only fueled the rumors about the two of us among my colleagues.

Caught under their knowing gazes, I could only manage a forced smile.

Inside, I couldn't help but feel a little confused.

Sophie's background was clear.

She was the daughter of the big boss.

But she had never shown any real interest in her work or in relationships.

The big boss had been so stressed about it, he almost lost his hair.

But Sophie's quirky personality made her impossible to control.

He had even once wondered if his daughter might have issues with her sexual orientation.

Until I came along.

To that, I could only shake my head.

I couldn't fathom that someone like Sophie—beautiful, well-endowed, and from a prestigious family—would ever be interested in someone like me.

"Everyone, please don't make jokes about girls. It's easy to affect someone's life."

"So, are you saying you're afraid I'll affect your life?"
